These three variables represent the three axes of a three-dimensional system with the geometric shape of a cube, hence the na-me of this forecasting model.
INTRODUCTION
The new report on the current state of the market and future sales trends produced by CSU-MECS, called “THE CUBE” aims to provide companies in the packaging machinery sector with a useful tool for analysing, forecasting and simulating the growth prospects for sales in global mar-kets.Unlike the forecasts made by other data providers, which are often based solely on expected variations in consumption of end products in the various geographical re-gions and/or evaluations made by privile-ged observers in the industry, the estimates made by UCIMA are differentiated accor-ding to three key parameters:
1. GEOGRAPHICAL REGION: three levels of detail: Global, 6 Macro-
The “Cube” offers an extensive and detailed breakdown of the market and consequen-tly a range of adequately detailed forecasts, each of which has a specific mix of the th-ree dimensions as its coordinates (e.g. labelling machines for the pharmaceutical indu-stry for sale in Saudi Arabia, filling machines for the beverage industry to be sold in the USA, and so on).

A NOTE
ON METHODOLOGY
Forecasts are crucial in the short to medium term (1-4 years) to enable companies to make accurate estimates of their expected sales volumes and above all to predict fu-ture earnings based on the manufacturing and sales mix adopted. This analysis is also essential for scenario simulations, an activity in which company decision-makers evaluate the short to me-dium-term impact of potential investment options, whether aimed at consolidating or diversifying these production and sales mi-xes.It is a dedicated tool developed specifical-ly for Italyn companies wishing to analyse the future prospects for change in their ex-port markets or those of their main compe-titors.By cross-referencing a wide range of diffe-rent sources (Eurostat, OECD, IMF, WTO and WORLD BANK for macroeconomic, household consumption and country politi-cal/institutional analyses; ITC for data on bilateral import-export flows of packaging machinery and spare parts to/from countri-es all over the world; and lastly the UCIMA survey for machinery export data by ma-chine type and geographical destination provided by Italyn companies) and using a complex econometric estimating/calibra-tion and calculation system, the “Cube” of-fers a truly integrated short and medium-term forecasting system for sales of packa-ging machinery. In particular, the evaluation scheme for the expected variation rates for each market area, client sector and family of machines is based on two different estimation mo-dels, both applied to packaging machine-ry exports.
The first considers variations in turnover by geographical region over a long-term pe-riod (14 years), whereas the second assi-gns greater importance to the more recent economic trends (last 4 years). Calibration was performed using simple in-terpolation and retropolation control me-thods (interpolation, parameter estimation and sensitivity tests implemented in rever-se to calibrate the model). The results were further calibrated to take account of a range of factors, including the international economic situation and count-ry risk, monetary and currency policies and appreciation/depreciation of bilateral/multilateral exchange rates and real effecti-ve multilateral exchange rates, changes to transaction costs and international exchan-ge regimes (regulatory, legislative and fi-scal), the degree of demographic and ur-ban development and the effective con-sumption of packaging at the individual country level.
The unique value of the “Cube” derives fir-stly from the “holistic” methodological ap-proach adopted in which the forecasts are based on an integrated, coherent estima-tion/calibration/computation system using many different sources, and secondly from the method used for weighting the three di-mensions of the forecast. This weighting takes account of the real im-portance of the geographical region, client sector and machinery family in the typical production mixes observed amongst the in-dustry leading companies at a global level, including not just the characteristics of the typical production/export mixes of Italyn companies but also those of Italy’s main

competitor countries (Germany, USA, Chi-na, Japan and others).
This gives rise to a range of 252 expected annual average growth rates across the 6 geographical macro-regions and more than 2,900 growth rates when conducting the analysis at the most detailed level of in-dividual countries. In both cases, the expected growth rates are projected over a period of four years (in this edition, the four-year period 2015-2018).Because these forecasts are differentia-ted over three dimensions in which each company can reference the expected sa-les of its own specific production/export mix, they are more accurate than indivi-dual growth/production trends in down-stream end product segments, in the final
demand of client sectors or in simple terri-torial growth of machinery exports.
COUNTRY RANKINGS
The expected results in terms of size and growth for individual countries are then drawn together into rankings. Rankings are provided for the size of markets in 2014, for the forecast size in 2018 and for fore-cast growth of both the market and Italyn exports to these countries. Another ranking, the Growth-MECS (G-MECS) RANKING, brings together the two key factors determining the attractiveness of markets: size and growth. This ranking con-siders the size (in terms of value) of the new markets that will be generated in different countries between 2015 and 2018.
STRUCTURE OF DATA SHEETS
AND GUIDE TO INTERPRETATION
The Country or Geographical Region Data Sheets comprise two main sections. The first describes the existing situation and outlines the current size of the packa-ging machinery market for the country in question and its breakdown by client sec-tors and families of machinery.
The second section looks at the country’s expected development over the subsequent four-year period and includes an average annual growth forecast both for the market as a whole and for exports by the Italyn packaging machinery manufacturers.Specifically, the data sheets contain the fol-

READING GUIDE
lowing information:
FIRST SECTION - The market 2014Macroeconomic data: GDP growth fore-
casts for years 2014, 2015 and 2016, the Ratings of the leading international agencies (Standard & Poor’s, Moody’s and Fitch) and the country’s position in the Italyn packaging machinery export rankings.
Value of the packaging machinery marketin 2014: this value includes the country’s
domestic production plus total imports. The market value includes both new ma-chinery and spare parts associated with customs code 842290 and the corre-sponding international codes.
CAGR 15/18 (Compound Annual GrowthRate): the forecast average annual growth
in the packaging machinery market in the country in question.
CAGR 15/18 Export ITA: the forecast ave-rage annual growth in Italyn exports of packaging machinery to the country in question. If this figure is higher than the overall CAGR for the country, it means that Italyn exports will gain market share during the period considered; if it is lo-wer, the country will grow more rapidly than Italyn exports, which will therefore see a decline in market share.
Packaging machinery imports: in this sec-tion the packaging machinery market of the country in question is divided up between domestic production and im-ports. Imports are in turn divided up between Italy’s share and those of the other main exporter countries.
Note that here too total imports include both new machinery and spare parts.
Clearly, the higher the % of spare parts as a share of total imports the more the market can be considered mature, so it can be assumed that the sales refer to the replacement of existing machines rather than installation of new machines.
2014 market value: The packaging ma-chinery market is divided up here into 7 families of machinery (Filling, Label-ling, Cleaning, FFS, Cartoning, Wrap-ping and Pallet Forming machines) and 6 client sectors (Food, Beverage, Phar-maceutical, Cosmetics, Chemicals and Other Sectors). The analysis serves to identify how much the different machine/sector combinations contribute to the ma-keup of the reference market. The same breakdown is shown in graphic form for ease of understanding.
SECOND SECTION - The market 2018Forecasts 2015-2018: The second data
sheet section provides the expected ave-rage annual growth rates for the analysed market, both for each of the client sec-tors and families of machinery conside-red, and for each of the different machi-ne-sector mixes. This makes it possible to identify the specific segments for which most significant growth or contraction is expected.
The data sheets provide growth forecasts both for the market as a whole and for Italyn machinery exports to the specific market, again divided up according to the various product-sector combinations. This makes it possible to determine the machine-sector mixes in which Italyn com-panies will be able to grow more rapidly than their competitors, thus increasing

9
PACKAGING MACHINERY: GROWTH FORECASTS 2015-2018
their market shares, and those in which fiercer competition is to be expected lea-ding to a contraction in shares.
Value of the market 2018: by applying the expected growth rates to market condi-tions in 2014, it is possible to estima-te the value that the country’s packaging market will have in 2018, both in absolu-
te terms and for each of the machine-sec-tor combinations, in the absence of signi-ficant technological or geopolitical uphe-avals. The last table shows the extent to which the individual production mixes are likely to grow each year in terms of value.
SIMULATION AND USE
OF DATA BY COMPANIES
Companies can apply the forecast CAGRs for Italyn exports to each country and for each machine-sector combination to their own specific production mix. By adding together the various values obtai-ned, companies can therefore calculate their expected revenues over the next four
years and simulate the way in which they change according to the different com-mercial and production strategies adopted (e.g. by increasing the share of sales in the beverage sector or in Asia with respect to 2014).

SYNTHESIS
DATA SHEET SECTION:
SUMMARY OF RESULTS
BY GEOGRAPHICAL MACRO-REGION
According to Ucima Research Department - MECS estimates, the world packaging ma-chinery market (including both new machi-nes and spare parts) totalled 34.57 billion euros at the end of 2014.
ITALY, whose total exports make up about a quarter of total world exports, satisfies 13.8% of global market demand. 41% of the remaining world demand is met by imports from other countries (especial-ly Germany, which has a slightly higher ex-port share than Italy at 28.6%, as well as China at 5.6% and USA at 4.8%) and the remaining 45.3% by domestic production.Projected global growth in 2015-2018 stands at 5.4% a year. This means that by 2018, the global packaging machinery markets will have grown by more than 8 billion euros and world demand will have reached 42.6 billion euros.
The breakdown of world demand by geo-graphical macro-regions shows that ASIA and the MIDDLE EAST is the largest market (12.3 billion euros), followed by the EU-ROPEAN UNION (almost 10 billion euros) and NORTH AMERICA (6.4 billion euros in USA and Canada).
Market demand in other geographical re-gions (Africa, Oceania, Central and South America, Mexico, non-EU Europe) amounts to about 6 billion euros.
The largest client sectors for packaging machinery are the Beverage sector (11.1 billion euros), the Food sector (10.8 billion euros) and the Pharmaceutical sector (4.5 billion euros). Next come the two sectors
Chemicals and Cosmetics (both at around 1.6 billion euros) and lastly all other sectors (particularly Tobacco and Tissue) at just un-der 5 billion euros.
The machines that are most in demand at a global level are Filling machines (almost 13 billion euros) and FFS (Form, Fill and Seal) machines (11.3 billion euros). Cartoning machines command a global market of around 3.2 billion euros, Pallet forming machines 2.5 billion euros, and Labelling and Wrapping machines around 2 billion euros. The smallest family of ma-chines is that of Cleaning and Sterilising machines (global demand of just 762 mil-lion euros).
The growth forecasts for the global market in 2015-2018 reveal improved prospects for sales of packaging machinery in the Food, Cosmetics, Chemicals and Others sectors, while the average annual growth forecasts for the Beverage and Pharmaceu-tical sectors are below average. Likewise, high growth is expected for the Filling machines and Wrapping machines families and the small segment of Cleaning machines, while at the same time global demand for Pallet forming machines and Cartoning machines will grow at below the global average.
CSU-MECS forecasts half a point higher global growth in the export performance of Italyn companies compared to the an-nual average growth in market demand (+5.9% compared to +5.4% growth in mar-ket demand). This means that Italyn manufacturers will
Copyright UCIMA Research Department
11
gain shares of global markets at the ex-pense of international competitors and/or domestic production.
More specifically, average annual growth in Italyn exports will be higher than mar-ket growth in the Food sector (especial-ly Wrapping, Filling and Cleaning machi-nes), in the Cosmetics sector (all families of machines, especially FFS and Cartoning machines, but not Cleaning machines), in the Chemicals sector (all machines except for Cartoning machines and Wrapping ma-chines), and to a smaller extent in the Phar-maceutical sector (especially Labelling ma-chines, Cleaning machines and Wrapping machines).
By contrast, the Italyn companies may ex-perience an overall loss in market share in the Beverage sector (all machines except
for Labelling machines and Cleaning ma-chines) and in the Tobacco-Tissue sector (here too, all machines except for Labelling machines and Wrapping machines, which will instead see a strong export performan-ce).To sum up, the Italyn machine families with the worst export performances will be Car-toning machines and Pallet forming machi-nes. These segments will display strong growth only in slow-growing and/or very small client sectors.
Note: For market size, the expected market growth rates for 2015-2018 and the growth ra-te forecasts for Italyn packaging machine-ry exports to world’s largest countries, see the summary in the Country Ranking Sec-tion below.
