Ma’aden announces partnership todevelop new integrated phosphatecomplex with Mosaic and SABIC
The Saudi Arabian Mining Company(Ma’aden) has announced thesigning of heads of agreement tojointly develop a fully integrated,world-class phosphate productionfacility in the Kingdom of SaudiArabia with The Mosaic Co and theSaudi Basic Industries Corp(SABIC). The estimated cost of theproject is approximately $7 bn.Ma’aden will own 60%, Mosaic 25%and SABIC 15%. The new complexwill be one of the largest integratedphosphate facilities in the world andwill approximately double Ma’aden’sexisting phosphate production whileadding important new products toMa’aden’s production capabilities.The project will include new miningand processing plants in thekingdom at Wa’ad Al ShammalMineral Industrial City, as well asfurther processing plants at Ras AlKhair Mineral Industrial City. Thetwo sites will be linked by the North-South Railway. Production at thenew facilities is expected tocommence in late 2016 with a totalproduction capacity of approximately16 M tonnes/y. The facilities willproduce, as finished products,approximately 3 M tonnes offertilizer products, as well asapproximately 440,000 tonnes ofdownstream products includingpurified phosphoric acid (PPA) usedin food industries, sodiumtripolyphosphate (STPP) used indetergents, and dicalciumphosphate and monocalciumphosphate used in animal feed. Thedevelopment of local communities inthe north of the kingdom will be akey benefit of this project. In additionto direct employment opportunitiesof nearly 1500 jobs, a coordinatedprogramme of regional developmentis underway. The joint venturepartners are developing plans for alocal R&D facility that will encourage
the study and development ofphosphate products and processes.

Italmatch buys Thermphos businesses
Italian speciality chemicals firmItalmatch Chemicals has purchased aphosphonates plant in Newport, UKand a phosphorus chloride plant inFrankfurt, Germany from bankruptDutch chemical producer ThermphosInternational [Focus on Surfactants,Feb 2013]. The new acquisitions giveadditional turnover of €80 M, bringingexpected overall turnover for 2013 tomore than €250 M, and add 100 staffto Italmatch’s workforce. The deal willhelp Italmatch become a major playerin the global speciality chemicalmarkets for fuels, plastics, water anddetergents. The firm, which iscontrolled by Mandarin CapitalPartners, already has productionplants in Italy, Spain and China andsales offices in the USA and PacificAsia.

Eliclear 4U rheology modifier for clearand textured shampoos and bodywashes
An innovative rheology modifierlaunched at in-cosmetics 2013 is thefirst outcome of a partnershipannounced in 2012 between the twocompanies Seppic and Coatex. Thecombination of their expertise inrheological additives with anexhaustive study of market needs hasled the partners to the launch ofEliclear 4U. ‘Remarkable clarity andunwavering suspension’ are amongthe properties that Eliclear 4Uprovides to both traditional andsulfate-free surfactant-basedsystems, they say. The easy-to-useliquid product thickens and suspendsparticles in formulations from pH 5.
‘The launch of Eliclear 4U is animportant milestone for the Seppicand Coatex collaboration,’ says AlainMari, CEO of Coatex. ‘This productwill enable cosmetics formulators todesign shampoos and body washesremarkable for their texture andclarity,’ he claims.
