Mount Vesuvius is astratovolcano in theGulf of Naples, Italy, about 9 kilometres (5.6mi) east ofNaplesand a short distance from the shore. It is one of several volcanoes which form theCampanian volcanic arc. Vesuvius consists of a largeconepartially encircled by the steep rim of a summitcalderacaused by the collapse of an earlier and originally much higher structure. Its height is 1281 metres.
