SOCAR Polymer is one of SOCAR’s major projects in the processing
industry. It was established in 2013 in order to expedite the
development of the country’s chemical industry. The SOCAR
Polymer investment project is the first of its nature and scale, and is
currently building two plants in the Sumgait Chemical Industrial
Park, in order to produce 180,000 t of polypropylene (PP) starting
from the 1st quarter of 2018 and 120,000 t of high-density
polyethylene (HDPE) starting from the 3rd
quarter of 2018.
The project’s main objective is to replace the import and increase the
export potential of the country. 30% of the production output will be
directed towards the local market; the remaining 70% will be
exported to Turkey and other European markets.
The total investment cost of the SOCAR Polymer project is around
$750 million.
SOCAR Polymer is the first project in Azerbaijan implemented on the basis
of a non-recourse project financing principle, without a guarantee of the
parent company. In order to execute the project, SOCAR Polymer has
engaged an Italian engineering company, Tecnimont as an EPC contractor.
Another leading engineering company, Fluor, was attracted as a PMC
contractor to supervise EPC contractor’s activity.
