ITALY CRAFTS AND GIFTS

Italy is famous for its variety and manufacture of pastas. Pastas come in all shapes, sizes and colours.

Pasta Necklaces or Bracelets

You will need: • A variety of dried pasta shapes which have holes in them e.g. macaroni, cannelloni, wheels etc. These can be bought in colours e.g. green and red or you can dye them yourself and re-dry them

• Crewel needles • Thread or shirring elastic

• Scissors

To dye pasta: dilute food colouring to a strong solution with water. Place pasta in solution and leave for half an hour to absorb colour. Dry out flat on a tray in a very low oven, on top of a radiator or leave in an airing cupboard for at least a day or two. Use when completely dry.

A good tip is to thread needles with elastic or thread to required length before meeting - it saves time.

Method: Give each Beaver Scout a needle and thread and allow them to string together a selection of pasta to give a variety of textures and colours. Tie the two ends off by knotting together.

This activity could include making a box to keep or give the craft gift in.

Italians enjoy eating ice cream, who doesn't? They are famous for making and selling it so here is a craft to celebrate the fact. Ice cream is a luxury which is often served up at parties.

Catch a Cornetto!

You will need: • Thin card, preferably pale brown • Self adhesive tape or stapler or glue • Scissors • Tissue paper in 'ice cream' colours

e.g. pink, white, brown

The colours are symbolic of ice cream.

Preparation: Make a template of a half circle, about the size of a breakfast plate and draw this onto card.

Method: The Beaver Scouts cut out card and make a simple cone fixing with either tape, staples or glue. Making the 'ice cream' balls is easy! Just simply screw up paper tissue into a round ball to fit into top of cone.

The craft is complete and the Beaver Scouts can now try tossing and catching the ice cream balls with their cones. There are many games you can develop from this craft e.g. relays, counting catches and so on. Have fun!

Italians are famous for their ice cream. You may like to try making some at home, particularly unusual flavours like brown bread ice cream or buy packets of ice cream mix and tryout the results on the Colony. Ice cream making is a long process as it takes some hours to freeze and isn't very exciting for Beaver Scouts to join in. However, like Italians most Beaver Scouts love ice cream so try some market research and taste as many flavours as the Colony can afford to buy. Visit an ice cream parlour and find out what goes on behind the

scenes. Create some knickerbocker glories or ice cream sundaes and eat the results. Visit a local area like a park and observe the result of eating ice cream and ice lollies i.e. what do people do with the wrapper? How can Beaver Scouts help their community to enjoy ice cream but not suffer from a litter problem?

GAMES

Bocce is a favourite Italian pastime, with many variations like lawn bowling, nine pins and boules.

Bocce Beaver Scout style

A game which can be adapted for inside or outside playing. If the game is played inside light, home-made balls can be used.

In the centre of the playing area place a marker or peg. Both ends of the playing area are marked areas where Beaver Scouts must stand to play the balls. A ball, the target ball or pallino is thrown to start the game. It must land at least five feet beyond the marker and not in a marked area. The game is played in teams of three to six Beaver Scouts, with four tennis or plastic balls each and alternating turns. The Beaver Scouts try bowling their balls as near to the pallino as possible without scattering or touching other balls otherwise it becomes a no throw. The six balls nearest to the pallino, when all balls have been used, gain a point each. The game continues until a team has scored 18 points.

In France: This type of o game would be known as boules or petanque and in the United Kingdom would resemble the game of bowls.

Lotto lotto was developed from the Italian National lottery which has been held at weekly intervals almost uninterrupted since

1530. Bingo and Housey Housey are variations of the game.

There are many commercially available lotto games. However you may like to play lotto with the Colony and make the game, so here's one to prepare earlier for four Beaver Scouts or Beaver Scout lodges/ teams. You will need:

• Thin sheets of card • Ruler • Old birthday cards • Scissors • Felt tip pens

Now prepare the birthday cards. Use large ones, brightly coloured. Cut off backs, use only fronts. Place at random any of the numbers between 1-32 on each card. DO NOT duplicate numbers

To play: The aim of the game is to cover the squares on the birthday card. You could also see who was the first to cover the corners. A game to help concentration.

The leader draws a number token out of the bag and shouts the number i.e. all the twos, 22. If a Beaver Scout has that number on their card it is then given and the Beaver Scout covers up the number. The game continues in this fashion until someone has covered up the card. Be aware that some Beaver Scouts will not know their numbers well but should know things like one and three but not necessarily thirteen. You can make this game most amusing by the way in which the numbers are called out practise and have fun!

FOOD

Pizzas are a favourite food and originally came from the Naples area of Italy} however there are many regional variations. The Beaver Scouts will be very familiar with pizzas as they are available in many different outlets. Make your own!

French Bread Pizzas

You will need: .Oven

• Baking sheets • French bread • Tomato puree or tomato ketchup

maybe flavoured with herbs • Grated cheese

A selection of the following:

• Mushrooms sliced • Green and red peppers sliced • Onions sliced • Cooked ham shredded • Tomatoes sliced • Cooked sausage

sliced

Preparation: Purchase ingredients and decide if Beaver Scouts are to prepare} grate} slice ingredients or if you need to do so. This will depend on a time element and availability of help.

Method: Oil baking sheets. Set oven to medium hot temperature.

Give each Beaver Scout a piece of French bread and spread it with the puree or ketchup mixture. They then choose what to put on their pizza to create a taste which pleases them and pleases the eye. You may like to give them a challenge of making faces or a theme e.g. monster pizzas. Finish by covering with grated cheese.

Adults place pizzas in oven (remembering whose is whose!) and cook for 10 to 15 minutes until cheese and other ingredients are soft. Remove from oven and baking sheet. Allow to cool a little before eating.

USA CRAFTS AND GIFTS

Everyone in the USA gets involved in games, even if they are not in a team, they support their teams by going along and even becoming cheer-leaders. Cheerleading is very much part of the American cultural tradition. Beaver Scouts can join in events by trying out cheer-leading, perhaps they could develop a cheer for the Group.

Cheer-leading Beaver Scouts

You will need: • Two brightly coloured magazines per

Beaver Scout

• Scissors • Self-adhesive tape (coloured is best)

Open up the magazines so approximately one quarter is one side, three quarters the other. On the three quarters' side start cutting up to staples taking a few pages at a time to make it easier for the Beaver Scouts to handle. When completed, roll up the magazines and make handles by using tape.

Beaver Scouts have now made cheer-leaders' shakers. They will rustle and make interesting noises when shaken so now try some yells and cheers. Many Colonies have developed their own. Here are one or two.

1,2,3 B Brave Who are we? E Energetic We are Beavers A Active Can't you see V Very special 3,2, 1 E Extra caring We have lots R Really friendly And lots of fun S Sharing Beavers!

Try using the shakers at the end of each line and putting in simple actions, like jumping up at the end. It's lots of fun and the Beaver Scouts will relate to this activity well as American sports are becoming increasingly popular.

Although denim originated in France, manufacturers in the USA took the fabric and created the famous jeans worn and recognised throughout the world. American cotton is famous for its high quality and T-shirt and sweatshirt styles originate from this country.

Jeans and T-shirts

You will need: • Fabric crayons or pastels

This activity will need parental support so that articles of clothing can be brought to a Colony meeting and 'decorated'. Make sure the Beaver Scouts have permission to do this. Ask the Beaver Scouts to bring a plain, pale coloured T-shirt and/or jeans to the meeting or use fabric scraps, preferably in cotton. These can vary enormously in price and availability so do take time to shop around.

Use the crayons or pastels according to instructions and help the Beaver Scouts to produce a design on the items brought. Many fabric crayons require an iron to set the colour so be well aware of safety factors and organisation.

This activity will give the Beaver Scouts much pleasure as the artwork can be viewed for all to see and is less daunting than imagined. As Americans say) 'Go for it.)

Food

Sticky) sugary ddughnuts originated in the USA are always a treat so why not try eating some in a different way? You will need a quantity of doughnuts) some string to thread them through and a beam to hang them on.

~\$~~<~ ~~/

Prepare the doughnuts by threading string through and tying at an appropriate height onto a beam. The Beaver Scouts run up and try and eat the doughnut without using their hands!! Give the Beaver Scouts a time limit in which to eat the doughnuts. If they fail) give them the doughnut anywaythey've tried and it has been fun and probably very messy!

Burgers

Burgers) a universally popular fast food from the USA) are now found in nearly every country in the world and are often eaten at birthday parties and celebrations. Burgers traditionally are made from beef but there are many non-meat varieties and recipes available for those with special dietary needs.

You will need) to make 4 Quarter Pounders: .11b minced beef. Salt) pepper .4 burger buns. Oil for grilling • Onion and ketchup for garnishing .4 cheese slices optional for cheese

burgers

Strict adult supervision will be needed with the grill and oven. Turn on grill to high and oven to 300 F) Gas mark 2.

Mix meat and seasonings together lightly in a ball and divide in 4 and shape into flat round burgers. Squeeze so they don)t break up when cooking.

beginning and end points should be marked off and the length of the track a suitable distance. The Beaver Scouts climb into a sack and holding up the sack firmly, wait in a row. On the command 'go' they hop and bounce towards the finishing line. The one who reaches the line first is the winner.

One game which constantly pops up as a popular game played by children everywhere, possibly with local variations of the animal involved, is:

Pin the Tail on the Donkey

It has been included here for no other reason than the fact that America was explored and opened up largely by people using the horse and mule as their form of transport.

Fix the donkey picture to a wall surface. Blindfold a Beaver Scout, give him the tail and pin and ask him to place the tail in the correct position on the donkey. See what happens! The Colony can have a good laugh.

Australia CRAFTS AND GIFTS

Celebrate that famous Australian animal the kangaroo by making a letter or note holder.

Kangaroo Letter Holder

You will need:

• Paper plates • Thin card • Templates • Staples, glue or self adhesive tape • Paint and brushes or felt tip pens and

crayons

• Scissors • Ribbon

Preparation: Each Beaver Scout will need one plate each and one half plate. Prepare the templates.

Each Beaver Scout will need one head and one body, obtained by drawing around the templates onto card and then cutting out.

Method: The Beaver Scouts colour and decorate head and body and plates. Assemble when dry if using paint. You may use glue or self adhesive tape but staples are easier, more efficient and quicker.

Letters here

Half Plate for Letter Pouch

Legs

Staples

Letters and notes can be put in the kangaroo's pouch for safe keeping.

Spooky Red Backed Spiders

The dangerous and highly poisonous red backed spider is found allover Australia even in the densely populated suburbs. Children have to learn to avoid these spiders from an early age.

You will need: • Plastic cups. (The type which come

from vending machines) • Self adhesive paper shapes in black or

use black paper • Glue • Paper/glue • Shirring elastic • Red card • Scissors

Preparation: Collect equipment. Pierce the bottom of the cups so that at a later stage shirring elastic may be threaded through.

Method: Cut strips about two thirds up the container. Remember spiders have eight legs!

Stick a piece of red card on the base of cup and fix on eyes and other decorations. Thread elastic through the holes and secure with a knot inside. Watch the spider bounce and move! Spooky! !

FOOD

Lammingtons are cakes which are very popular in Australia. They are very rich, as chocolate is used and are often served at parties and celebrations. Lammington Drives are often held to help fund raising for various causes. Perhaps the Colony would not only like to make Lammingtons, but also have a Lammington Drive for Group funds or to help a worthy cause or charity.

Lammingtons

You will need: • Victoria sponge mix • Cooking chocolate • Desiccated coconut

Slabs of Victoria sponge cake baked in square or oblong tins. This can be homemade or bought commercially. Cut the cake into 2-3 inch squares.

,.~~;.

Melt a quantity of cooking chocolate in a bowl above a pan of boiling water. Dip the cake squares into the melted chocolate and cover completely then dunk into desiccated coconut. Leave to harden and drain on a cake rack. Eat when ready or pack into bre; for gifts., i

j : ·--i.oadi~""'-~

Care must be taken when allowing the Beaver Scouts near melted chocolate and adult supervision is important. Remove chocolate, when melted, from pan and far away from heat source before allowing the Beaver Scouts near.

Alternatively, why not get the Beaver Scouts to make some chocolate butter cream icing and use that instead of melted chocolate. If any Beaver Scouts have special dietary needs then diabetic chocolate could be used or carob, available from health food stores.

Bright colours are part of the Australian way of life, particularly bird life in the outback and bush e.g. parrots. Australians love going to the beach and bright exuberant beachwear is very much a part of Australian living. A favourite at parties amongst Australian children is brightly coloured bread, known as Fairy bread.

Fairy Bread

You will need:

• Sliced bread • Butter or margarine • Hundreds and Thousands or coloured

vermicelli

• Table knives • Equipment for clearing up and

washing up • Shape cutters or templates • Plates for serving up (optional)

Butter the bread slices and then sprinkle generously with Hundreds and Thousands. Now cut out festive shapes from the bread. Arrange on plates, serve and eat. Simple!

Australia is a land where the majority of the population live in the coastal areas and at least four fifths of the country is very sparsely populated, particularly in the outback. The only means of communication is through radio links for schools on air and for the famous Flying Doctor service for example. Here is a game which introduces Beaver Scouts to sound

and noises, and whilst it is not Morse code it will help them to think about communication. How could you hold a party when your nearest neighbour lives 200 miles away?

Guess the Noise

You will need: • Something to tap with • Various articles hidden from the

Beaver Scouts' view. Use simple articles e.g. glass, wood, metal, plastic products.

You may like to play this game in teams or lodges, or as part of a bases evening, or try the whole Colony at once. The latter idea might be good discipline, having to wait your turn and being prepared to help a friend stuck for a guess. Quite simply, the leader taps the article gently and the Beaver Scouts have to guess what is making that sound. A very thought provoking game which needs various disciplines.

Catch the joeys or Humpitt Lumpitty

The kangaroo is a famous and uniquely Australian animal. Young kangaroos are called ljoeys' and they live and develop in the female kangaroo's pouch.

No equipment needed.

The Beaver Scouts stand at one end of the area in which the game is to be played and an adult or older Beaver Scout at the other end. The Beaver Scouts are joeys who have run away and the adult or older Beaver Scout, the kangaroo who is going to catch them and keep them safe. The game can involve various actions in turn so the Beaver Scouts can be hopping joeys, running joeys, skipping joeys and so on. On command, the Beaver Scouts start doing an action and the kangaroo has to chase the joeys. When a joey is caught he joins onto the kangaroo, a new action is commanded and the game begins again. The game continues until all the joeys are caught, or the kangaroo and joeys are exhausted.
