Footsteps of Chiara Lubich (Focolare)

Chiara Lubich (1920-2008) was founder of the Focolare Move-ment (The Work of Mary). Born in Trent, Italy, her baptismal name was Silvia. In 1943, when she entered the Third Franciscan Or-der, she took the name Chiara because she was attracted by St. Clare of Assisi’s radical choice of God. 1943 also marks the year that Chiara Lubich made a vow of chastity, and it has become the year associated with the birth of the Focolare. In the course of her life, she saw the spirituality of the Focolare – the spirituality of unity – grow around the world. She was awarded 15 honorary doctoral degrees, numerous civ-ic awards, the Templeton Prize for Progress of Religion, and the UNESCO Peace Prize. She has published more than 50 books in 29 languages.(New City Press)

Take a journey on the footsteps of Chiara Lubich with members and ad-herents of the Focolare Movement. Visit the house of the Holy family in Loreto where Chiara “had the first intuition of a new way in the Church: the Focolare”, which could be defined as “heart of a communitarian spirituali-ty, the spirituality of unity, now spread throughout all continents”. Visit her birthplace, Trento, where it all began during the year 1943, then Tonadico, a village in the Dolomite Mountains, where Chiara and her companions went to rest and where the “summer of light” or “paradise 49” took place. Make a stop in Siena to see the house of Saint Catherine of Siena, which Chiara often gave as a model. Discover Loppiano in the beautiful Toscan region, the first little town of the movement. “The origin of Loppiano is to be found in these summer gatherings on the Dolomite mountains called “Maria-polis” - “City of Mary”: a place where the Gospel should be lived not only during a summer vacation but in everyday life, from sunrise to sunset... Ad-miring from a hilltop the ancient Benedictine Abbey of Einsiedeln, Chiara imagined a small town that should embody the Gospel law of mutual love yet with all the elements of a modern city: houses, churches, shops, sport fields, workplaces, industries, schools.” Finally visit Assisi, the city of St. Francis and St. Clare of Assisi.
