CREATING CONNECTIONS_

HOW CAN YOU REDUCE YOURCONTRIBUTION TO TRANSPORTATION

GREENHOUSE GASES?

Stacey Henrich works as a TDM Manager with GVF. To reach Stacey by email: [email protected], or byphone: (610).354.8899.

New data shows that transportationemissions have replaced power as the topsource of CO2 emissions in the USA. Withbillions of people driving single occupancyvehicles per day it is no surprise to hearthat transportation has become the leadingsource of greenhouse gasses.

The U.S. transportation sector, whichincludes cars, trucks, planes, trains, andboats now emits 1.9 billion tons of CO2annually. The electric power sector emits1.8 billion tons. *

Public awareness towards these issueshas improved greatly over the past fewyears and we are finally beginning tounderstand the consequences of ouractions and the impact they are having onour world. How we travel can have a directimpact on local air quality, putting ourcommunities at risk of health issues such asasthma and cardiovascular disease. Eachone of us can make a difference by reduc-ing transportation emissions improvingthe environment for all. Earth Day is a great reason to start

reducing your contribution towards trans-portation emissions. The first Earth Daywas organized on April 22, 1970. Its mis-sion was a call for global environmentalawareness. Although it started in theUnited States, Earth Day has since growninto an international day, observed by near-ly 175 countries worldwide. Earth Day pro-vides the information and inspirationneeded to change human attitude andbehavior towards the way we treat ourenvironment.

In honor of Earth Day April 22, 2018here are some simple ways to go green andlower your transportation emissions: Tryanalternativetransportationmode

Transportation Demand Management(TDM) strategies are strategies that reducesingle occupancy vehicles through alterna-tive transportation options such as; publictransit, carpooling, vanpooling, biking, walking or working from home. You canfind more information on these alterna-tives and more at wearetdm.com.Thinkbeforeyoudrive Lowering your

miles traveled by combining trips is one ofthe easiest ways to save time, money andemissions. If you own more than one vehi-cle, use the less fuel-efficient one onlywhen you can fill it with passengers.Whenever possible, join a carpool or takepublic transit, or use a bike share programif offered in your area. Investintherightcar There are a range

of different alternative fuel vehicle avail-able today. Electric vehicles, in particular, are growing in popularity. Electric cars pro-duce much lower global warming emis-sions than the average compact gasoline-powered vehicle.

These are just a few ways you can makea difference. For more information on waysyou can reduce your transportation emis-sions check out wearetdm.com.
