The Ithaca College men’s rowing team was formed during the admin-istration of President Howard Dillingham in the fall of 1968. The first competition was on April 19, 1969, when the Bombers rowed

against Buffalo, Buffalo State and Canisius. Two weeks later coach Gary Kilpatrick and team captain and stroke Tim McNell guided the Bombers to a victory over Manhattan, Canisius and Buffalo in the Metropolitan Championship in New York City.

Brief coaching stints by Kilpatrick and Bill Cromwall were followed by the successful tenure of Bob Tallman. From 1972-79 he built the Bombers from a fledgling program into a small-college powerhouse.

In the mid-1970s, Ithaca’s crews established themselves as medal winners at the annual Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, recognized as the small-college national championship. In 1975 Ithaca’s heavyweights went 12-0 and finished third at the Dad Vail (behind Massachusetts and the Coast Guard). Two years later, led by Stew Leonard and Dave Pustell, the Bombers repeated the bronze-medal performance.

Ward Romer joined the coaching staff in 1973 as an assistant and has remained a fixture with the Bomber crew since. He became Ithaca’s fourth head coach after Tallman’s retirement in 1979. Romer’s arrival coincided with Ithaca’s entrance into lightweight rowing. The Bombers’ lightweights finished in the top 10 at the Dad Vails in each of their first 11 years.

Dan Robinson, a 1979 Ithaca graduate, has been a consistent contribu-tor to Bomber rowing. The current men’s head coach, Robinson helped

Recent highlights for the program have included five straight varsity 8 wins at the Atlantic League sprints, top-10 finishes at the 2001, 2002 and 2003 ECAC National Invitational Rowing Championships (an event that features Division I, II and III schools) and 12 of the last 16 point titles (encompassing results from men’s and women’s races) at the New York State championships. The 2003 varsity 8 boat posted a record of 14-2 — the program’s best ever — and the 2004 varsity 8 lost just once after the season’s opening weekend. Last spring Ithaca won four medals at the state meet (including the second varsity 8’s gold medal) and the third varsity 8 won the program’s first medal ever at the ECAC Championships.

Women’s Crew HistoryITHACA COLLEGE

A women’s varsity program was initiated at Ithaca in spring 1975. Competing under club status, the Bombers captured the 1976 Dad Vail varsity 8 title the first year women’s races were offered at the regatta.

Jerry Dietz, a member of the bronze medal-winning men’s heavyweight 8 as an undergraduate, guided Ithaca to the crown in his first year as women’s coach. Although women’s rowing grew nationally over the next few years, Ithaca claimed the Dad Vail championship again in 1979, coached by Julie Rife, the stroke of the 1976 crew. Peg Mallery, who rowed in Ithaca’s top crew in 1981 and 1982 before transferring, competed for the U.S. national team in the inaugural 1986 Goodwill Games and in the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea.

In 1983 women’s crew became a varsity sport at Ithaca College. After several inconsistent years, coach Jocelyn Kearing guided Ithaca’s women’s varsity to the first two of what is now 18 consecutive winning seasons. Included in that run are four New York State small-school titles. The state championship first raced in 1990 and now includes nearly 30 colleges and universities. A key performer in the emerging women’s program was Becky Metz Robinson. After two letter winning seasons with the Bombers, Robinson made the national team in 1991. A year later she was a final-day cut from the 1992 U.S. Olympic team. She returned to help coach the Bombers and in 1995 became the first crew program representative to be inducted into the Ithaca College Athletic Hall of Fame.

The first NCAA-sponsored championship regatta for women was held in 1997. A women’s four from Ithaca qualified for the all-division event and placed fourth in the petite final and 10th overall. Mary Obidinski ’97, a member of that crew who was inducted into Ithaca’s Hall of Fame last

ITHACA COLLEGEyear, competed with the U.S. national team. In 2001 she won the women’s lightweight double at Princeton’s World Cup event. The Bombers made their second straight trip to the NCAA championships in 1998. They returned to nationals in 2001 and were the second-highest finishing Division II or III team at the 2001 championships.

The College Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) picked its first all-America teams in 2000 and at least one Bomber athletes has been honored every year since then, starting with Beth Greene and Liz Jackstadt. In 2002 the NCAA sponsored the first national championship event exclusively for Division III institutions. Ithaca took fourth that year and moved up to third the following year. Jackstadt, one of three all-Americans in the class of 2002, received the school’s Iris Carnell Award as the top female athlete in the senior class. In 2004 the program achieved its greatest success, winning the NCAA title. Ithaca’s varsity 8 boat won the gold medal at the grand final and the second varsity 8 boat achieved unprecedented success at nationals: the boat became the first second varsity 8 to qualify for the grand final. The Bombers’ combined score was the lowest ever recorded at the NCAA Division III Championships.

A year later the Bombers became the first program to repeat as Division III women’s crew national champions. The only school to compete in every NCAA Division III national championship event, Ithaca placed second in the grand final and third in the petite final. The Bombers’ three all-Americans included first-team choice Meghan Musnicki.

In 2006, Ithaca’s second varsity 8 gold medal in three years led the Bombers to second place in the team standings. Stephanie Knabe, who rowed at nationals all four years, was a first-team all-American.

of coaching experience in all, including stints with the novice, women’s and men’s crews.

Since 1988 the men’s lightweight crew is 72-34, including undefeated records in 1992 (12-0) and 1994 (9-0). The men’s lightweight crew captured the New York State Small School Championship in 1990, 1994 and 1996. The heavyweights won in 1993 and placed second in 1990 and 1991. In his five seasons as head women’s coach, Robinson

guided that crew to a 16-27 race mark and two top-15 Dad Vail Regatta finishes.

WARD ROMER Equipment Maintenance and RepairRomer, who was the Bombers’ head coach from 1980-87, spent 18 seasons with the men’s novice. A 1970 graduate of Cornell, Romer was a four-year member of the Big Red crew at the lightweight level. He first worked with Ithaca crew 1973 as freshmen coach, and moved up to varsity light-weight coach the following year. In 12 seasons as lightweight coach he posted a 58-44 record, while the heavyweight crew was 36-40 in his seven years

MEN’S CREW

Astrong fall season with unprecedented achievement and an experienced roster should be positive signs to a successful spring for the Bombers. Ithaca returns 18 members of their top three boats (including the third

varsity 8 that took home the heavyweight program’s first medal ever at the ECAC Championships).

The fall season featured a gold-medal performance at the Head of the Genesee, marking Ithaca’s first win in 19 years at that event (formerly called the Bausch & Lomb and the Stonehurst Regatta). Highlights of the fall season also included gold medals by the varsity 8, second varsity 8 and novice 8 at the Braxton Regatta and a ninth-place finish (out of 38 crews) at the Head of the Charles.

Commodores Pete Orlando and Tom Poole head a strong senior class that also includes Colin Clarry, Eriberto Rosales, Mike Warner, Clint Weigl and Hank Zimmerman. Juniors Nick Alvarez, Jon Covney, Dan Curtis, Brian Erickson, Chris Lisee, Kayleigh McElroy, Carlos Rosa-les, Eriberto Rosales and Neil Shapiro and sophomores Joe Bagliere, Shane Bucher, Morgan Ewing and Jon Thompson are all back from Ithaca’s varsity and second varsity 8s as well.

Last year’s freshmen-novice 8 won a bronze medal at the state champi-onships and took third in the petite final at the ECAC event.

A challenging schedule includes opening with Hobart, Marist and the Cornell lightweights. The Bombers will also face Division I competition in Bucknell and Holy Cross as well as Division III rivals Bates, Coast Guard, Colby, Connecticut College, Hamilton, Rochester, RIT, Skidmore, St. Lawrence and Tufts and Williams before the New York State regatta in early May. Ithaca’s ultimate goal is an invitation to the ECAC Champi-onships and the opportunity to compete for an ECAC National Invitation title.

WOMEN’S CREW

Hopes are high that 2009 will see the Bombers maintain the program’s unparalleled success—Ithaca is the only program to compete in all seven NCAA championship regattas and won team titles in 2004 and

2005 and the varsity 8 gold medal in 2006. The fall season saw the Bombers maintain their success among New

York State small schools. The varsity 8 won gold and the novice boat took second at William Smith’s Challenge on the Canal. At the Head of the Genesee (formerly the Stonehurst Regatta), the varsity 8 placed first for the third time in eight years. A week later Ithaca took sixth (out of 34 crews) at the Head of the Charles.

A strong senior class includes commodores Katie O’Driscoll and Alden Hall as well as Anthea Barnett, Alexandra Chesney, Maggie Fisk, Diana Glicini, Liz June, Kelsey Schaeffer and Sarah Veninsky. Schaeffer — a two-time all-American — and O’Driscoll both return to the varsity 8, along with sophomores Amy Gefell and Lauren LaPointe. Hall and Glicini are two of seven Bombers returning from the second varsity 8, along with juniors Ailyah Emas, Erica Gordon, Kathryn Irwin, Stephanie Levesque and Julie Potter.

Hopes are high for the novice crews, now under the direction of 2000 graduate Beth Greene, who has returned to the coaching staff.

Ithaca’s schedule includes five NCAA participants from a year ago: Bates, Coast Guard, St. Lawrence, William Smith and defending champ Williams. Division I schools on the slate include Cornell, Holy Cross and Marist. The Bombers’ first three races are all at home.
