Best of RwandaAs well as seeing the awsome gorillas and playful chimps, you will get to experience more of the culture and history of this complex country. Visits to memorial museums and Diane Fossey’s grave are available as well as the obligatory primate trekking.

Day One: Arriving at the airport you will be warmly welcomed by a Churchill Safaris representative, and transferred to your hotel in Kigali. A tour of the city can be arranged for interested parties.

Day four & FiveToday you depart Akagera for Nyungwe for two days. You will have lunch in Butare and stop at the genocide memorial, Nyanza and the Butare National museum, arriving at Nyungwe Forest in the evening.The next day you will go for chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe Forest. This ancient forest is one of the largest blocks of Montane for-est in East Africa, and holds incredible botanical diversity with over 200 types of trees and a myriad of flowering plants that include the giant lobelia as well as a number of stunning orchids. The forest is home to 13 species of primates including chimpanzees as well as L´Hoest and Colobus monkeys. For the birders among you Nyungwe hosts a recorded 300 bird species, with several Albertine Rift Endemics, the most notable being the great blue turaco. Spend the day in this incredible Forest returning in the evening to your lodge.

Day Two & ThreeAfter breakfast, you will explore Kigali by visiting the Genocide Museum and the crafts village. After lunch, you will proceed to Akag-era National Park for two nights, having a game drive as you enter the park before retiring to your lodge in the evening.

Akagera National Park is located in Eastern Rwanda, and is a drastically different environment characterized by swamps and wet-lands. Elephants, hippos, and buffalo are common sites on a game drive, and occasionally a lion or leopard as well. For birders Akag-era holds special significance as it has a recorded 500 species within the Park boundaries.The next morning explore the park in your safari vehicle or get out and go by foot. Spend the day discovering Akagera before return-ing to the lodge in the evening.

Day EightThere are so many options to choose from today as you get to decide between a second gorilla trek in the park, or tracking the en-dangered golden monkeys. You can also choose to visit the grave and final resting place of Diane Fossey and the gorilla cemetery. Later drive back to Kigali to transfer to your hotel or to the airport for your return flight.

Day Six & SevenThis morning you will drive to Ruhengere passing alongside Lake Kivu viewing various islands before arriving at your hotel in the even-ing. You will need a good night´s rest for the following day´s gorilla tracking.Today you set off for gorilla trekking in Parc des Volcans. Ascending the slopes of the Virungas, you will be immersed in the dense, lush rainforest. The vibrant birdcalls and squabbles of the golden monkeys will eventually bring you to the gorillas in their natural habitat, a truly unforgettable experience.Returning in the afternoon, you can go for the optional Ibyiwatu Cultural group performance, where you will be entertained and learn more about Rwandan culture, music, dance, and drama or take a visit to the twin lakes before returning to the lodge in the evening.
