From the Pastor’s Desk Will Our Children Have Faith? In his classic book, Will Our Children Have Faith?, John Westerhoff proposed a model for Christian Education that involves the entire congregation. At Sunrise, we are blessed with the care and support of so many people. As part of the Christian nurture of our children, a brochure is being prepared that will put into writing the scope and sequence of what we teach our children and when it will be taught. In the coming weeks, you will be hearing a great deal more about this important project. When completed, by September, you will be able to described how Sunrise passes on the wonderful heritage of our faith to the next generation.

Sunrise is blessed with amazing volunteers: people that give their time, talent, and love to make Sunrise the special place that it is. These are people that volunteer faithfully, week after week, quietly providing incredible service for the benefit of all of us. I could not imagine life at Sunrise without them. I would like to start thanking some of these people, monthly, in my letter to you. This month, I want to recognize Ray Dickinson. Ray is involved in so many areas of Sunrise’s life that it is hard to know where to begin. The Easter Sunrise Service would be impossible without him. He coordinates all of the sound equipment, physically setting it up on Easter morning hours before sunrise! This year, he even set it up twice, staging a trial run outside to double check the system for better sound coverage. His reward for all of this expertise is setting up the sound system each month for the Beach Services! Ray’s commitment to the music life of Sunrise is enjoyed each week. Singing in the choir, he is an integral part of our wonderful choir. There is nothing Ray will not do to support our music program. He is a bass, but will sing tenor parts as the need arrives! Thursday mornings find Ray in the kitchen helping to prepare the Men’s Breakfast and clean up afterwards. If I am called away to pray with a parishioner before surgery, I can always call on Ray at the last minute to give the devotion for the men. Ray actively supports our workdays and projects. His energy and humor are a blessing to the Sunrise family. Ray, we are all truly grateful! In God’s grace,

Summer Sunday School 2012 Sunrise offers Sunday School for all ages! Join us during the 10:00 a.m. hour for a time of study and worship. During the school year, we have classes for 3 and 4 year olds, kindergarten through 2nd, 3rd through 5th graders, 6th through 8th graders, and 9th through 12th graders. We use the curriculum, FaithWeaver Friends! This exciting curriculum focuses on our relationship with our friends, as well as our relationship with God. We’ll have different events each week, including games, stories, crafts, and even a surprise station! During the summer, we combine some of the age groups. Middle School Youth  will be diving into a series of small group sessions entitled “Beginning in Jesus” from the Experiencing Christ Together series by Youth Specialties. We will be looking at the many aspects of Jesus' being a Teacher, Healer, Shepherd, Servant, Savior, and Risen Lord.   Come out each week for some really great conversations with Gray! High School Youth this year will be studying specific scriptures using a curriculum called: 31 Verses Every Teenager Should Know. Come out each week for what is sure to be thought–provoking conversations with Mrs. Reece! Adult Sunday School Class, led by Dr. Polley, meets in the Library at 10:00 a.m. each Sunday. We are beginning a study of Abraham with a special eye to his significance in the three monotheistic religions, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

Presbyterian Women The Miriam-Naomi annual picnic will be on Tuesday, June 19th. It will be at 10:00 a.m. on the third Tuesday instead of the usual second Tuesday of the month, so that members of the group can be available to help with VBS. The picnic will be held at the Wild Dunes Property Owner’s Beach House. Everyone is asked to bring something to share for lunch. Passes and directions will be available at the gate, so be sure that Patsy Hindman knows ahead of time that you will be joining them. You can reach Patsy at 886-6161.

Women’s Evening Bible Study by Reece Smith The Women's Evening Bible Study group is looking forward to a new year of learning about women of the Bible. We will continue to meet on the third Tuesday of the month in the library at 5:30 p.m. Please join us for fellowship, food, and the opportunity to explore our faith through the stories of our biblical ancestors. Here is the monthly list of the particular woman of the bible that we will be studying:

June 19 – Dorcas July 17 – Judith August 21 – Tamar September 18 – Sapphira

October 16 – Potiphar’s wife November 20 – Rachel December 18 - Elizabeth

Soundscapes by Matthew Parker Composer of the Month Jean Phillipe Rameau (1683 – 1764) For this month, I’ve chosen a composer whose keyboard works were unfamiliar to me. I’ve always known that Rameau was a great French composer of the Baroque era, especially during graduate school when I had a history professor that believed every piece by Rameau was perfectly written. During the Baroque era (1600 – 1750), Rameau, along with Couperin, was the dominant French composer of harpsichord music. He gained his fame, however, with the publication of his Treatise on Harmony and his French operas. As a man, Rameau was thin, graceful and private. He had a close and turbulent relationship with the philosophers Voltaire and Rousseau. Rameau’s harmonies were ahead of their time, and he was greatly criticized by his contemporaries for his forward-thinking style. I’ll be playing harpsichord pieces by Rameau from his three published sets entitled Pieces de Clavecin, published in 1706, 1724, 1726. Special note: Mark your calendars for June 17th, when Tacy Edwards will be filling our sanctuary with her beautiful sounds of the flute. She continues to be a favorite with the Sunrise Congregation. Ladies Night Out! by Cydne Abernathy Ladies Night Out is a monthly dinner gathering for women of faith. Members and visitors of Sunrise are welcome, along with any female friends you'd like to bring along. We meet the second Thursday of the month for fellowship, food and fun. Monthly attendance is not required. Just come when you can and enjoy yourself when you come! Hello Ladies! Twice a year we have a unique twist to Ladies Night Out. June 14th will be our Ladies Night Out--Summer Edition! Instead of meeting at a restaurant, we will meet at the Isle of Palms Marina at 5:00 p.m. to board a boat with Barrier Islands Eco Tours! We will tour our Barrier Islands for three hours and will be served a freshly prepared dinner of Frogmore Stew. This truly is a special summer outing; we have taken this tour before and everyone who attended gave rave reviews. The cost for the tour, including dinner, is $45 per person. Seating is limited, and once the boat is full, it's full. So be sure to email me at [email protected] or sign up in the fellowship hall following the June 3rd and June 10th services. A very special thank you to our own Neila Stroman for making the arrangements for the Eco Tour.

Come join in the festivities Sunday, June 10th, following the 11:00 a.m. service. We'll have hamburgers, hot dogs and turkey burgers, along with everyone's favorite summer-time side dishes and specialties. The Session will supply the meat and bread; the

congregation is welcome to bring your favorite salads, casseroles, veggies, desserts and sides. If you've attended before, you know that the food is fabulous and the fellowship is even better. Mark your calendars for Sunday, June 10th, and be sure to join us for a good old-fashioned summertime meal. We'll see you Sunday, June 10th!

VBS Kick-Off Follows the Cook~Out Stay a little longer on Sunday, June 10th and help set-up for VBS! We will be decorating, setting up the classrooms, sanctuary and Fellowship Hall. It’s going to be the beginning of a really fun week of learning, exploring and creating an environment in which children and volunteers will be inspired to dive deeper into God’s word and in their relationship with God! Join us for this journey and give glory to God!

A Note from Gray

The month of May wrapped up the youths 2011-2012 school year. The beginning of the month was spent preparing for Youth Sunday that took place on May 13th. Youth Sunday is where the youth plan and lead the 11:00 worship service all on their own (with a bit of help from myself). The theme this year was water. All of the prayers, scriptures, and messages tied back to water. The main idea behind this was no matter how "rough" the waters of life may get, God is always there with us. This is the case whether things are calm like a cool pond, or wild like a white water rapid. The youth did a fabulous job with the service and I am just so proud of all their work!

“Winging it” Wednesdays: As you read the schedule of events below you will notice 2 dates each month named “Winging it” Wednesday. This idea came to me when I was staring at the summer month’s calendar, comparing all of the youth’s out of town dates that overlapped and would make planning youth events very difficult! However, I noticed that Wednesdays seem to be a day when we have a majority of youth in town! So now we come to the “Winging it” part. It’s summer time when the living is easy so why pressure ourselves with lots of plans! In my office will be a “Winging it” suggestion box that everyone can contribute to. A week before the event date I will choose a suggestion from this box and that will be the event for the follow week. This can be anything from meeting up for some froyo, capture the flag at the park, service project, or just spending some time down on the beach. Each event will have a devotional element along with time for fellowship.

Once the event is chosen, it will be emailed out/posted on the youth’s facebook wall a week before the event date. If you want to participate in that “winging it” Wednesday, you will need to let me know by the Sunday before the event! This is so I can make any necessary

arrangements, so your RSVP is crucial. You may let me know by phone, email, text, facebook, or in person!

I hope this helps with everyone’s busy schedules. So don’t forget to stop by my office and make some suggestions!

Just Coffee: Coffee with a Conscience

Just Coffee is available for purchase on the first Sunday of each month; it will be sold in the Fellowship Hall on Sunday, May 6th. Just Coffee is a cooperative based in Salvador Urbina, Chiapas, Mexico and makes it possible for the people of these communities to

remain with their families, make a decent living, and provide an education and healthcare for their children. The price of regular coffee is $9.00 and the price of decaf $10.00. We thank you for your continued support of this worthwhile mission.

Two-Cents-A-Meal

The Two-Cents-A-Meal Offering will be received in the bowl in the Narthex on Sunday, March 11th. As our own food is blessed at mealtime, individuals and families are encouraged to:

(1) remember the poor and hungry people around the world in prayer; and, (2) give at least two cents per person per meal as an offering to help alleviate hunger.

News from the Sunrise Nursery The Sunrise Nursery, Toddler and Preschool Rooms are ready to care for your young children while you attend services. If you know of families with young children, please extend an invitation to let them know that we have a nursery for their children that includes a structured craft or learning time with a Biblical

topic taken from the Preschool FaithWeavers Friends Curriculum, and a snack and playtime. We know how important it is for families to have a safe and caring place for their precious ones, and we are committed to making our Nursery Program exceed your expectations.

If you bring your baby or child to the Nursery, please notice the Sign-In/Out Sheets that are on the clipboard near the door of each room. It is very important that you sign your child in and provide us with your cell phone number. While you are in the sanctuary during worship or during Sunday School, please put your cell phone on silent but vibrate. If we need to contact you, we will call your cell phone. The Nursery “Seeking Donations” list:

Baby Monitors (so we can communicate between the rooms) *Volunteers (both services for the Crib Room and the Preschool Room).

*Prerequisite ~ You have to love babies and young kids and want to see them learn about the love of Christ. Please contact Jeanne Haid, Nursery Coordinator at 883-3888 during church office hours.

Thank You to our Church Family

Tom & Diedre Brown We would like to thank our church family for your spiritual and emotional support of our daughter, Amber, for the past seven years. She has grown up to be a very caring young lady in part because she has had such wonderful role models at Sunrise. Neila Stroman, and many other Elders, provided leadership during her confirmation class. Reese Smith guided her spiritually in Sunday School classes, as well as offering advice when she needed it most. Johnny Myatt and the members of the “Men’s Shelter Spaghetti Dinner” servers showed her that helping others is the best way to share God’s love. Peggy Wolford sponsored many of Amber’s youth group trips to Montreat and Bethelwoods which helped her form a lasting relationship with Jesus. Vance and our former Director of Educational Ministries, Audrey, helped Amber gain leadership experience by involving her in the Presbyterian Youth Council that planned and orchestrated youth events like Destination Unknown and the Middle School Retreat at Bethelwoods. Gray has been invaluable as a mentor and Youth Group Leader by planning meaningful opportunities for youth fellowship and community service. Jay Holliday, Bill Schupp, Devon and Jane McDavid all gave Amber advice and assistance in her search for the right college. The good people of this congregation that have had a lasting impression on Amber’s life are too numerous to name them all. You have all helped lay the groundwork for Amber’s future. She is well prepared to head off to college as an independent and confident young woman. Our family has been blessed to have so many extraordinary friends at Sunrise, and we thank God to be a part of this church family!

Our new church website has been launched! You can view current bulletins and the master calendar at www.sunrisepresbyterianchurch.org. Keep checking back as there will be many changes occurring in the coming weeks. Sunrise email address for Jeanne Haid, Church Administrator, has changed. Her new address is [email protected]. Please update your address books.

UPCOMING MISSION OPPORTUNITIES

SUMMER IS HERE

HANDS OF CHRIST

Summer means we are getting ready for our 2012 distributions of clothing and school supplies to children and families in our area who need an extra hand getting ready for the new school year. The mission of Hands of Christ is to bring Presbyterian Church USA congregations together to meet the needs of children as they begin each school year. Last year with all of your wonderful support we served over 4,600 children in the summer distributions, and continue helping schools and families during the school year when need is witnessed. The first part of the project this summer is coming up on June 10th. The mission committee will be handing out grocery bags with a list of school supplies we need. We will also be collecting socks and underwear in children's sizes 4-16, socks size M. Please return the bags with contributions on June 17th. All summer long we will be collecting gently used, khaki and navy pants, skirts, or shorts, also in children's sizes 4-16. We have plenty of adult sizes. Since some of our distributions are in areas where children do not wear uniforms, gently used school clothing will be accepted and passed on to those sights. Any help will be greatly appreciated. During the month of July we will list the distribution dates, and we will start asking for volunteers for the distributions. We are going to have 20 distributions again this summer. We will be in Walterboro, Moncks Corner, Summerville, and Kingstree as well as churches in Charleston County from Edisto in the south to New Wappetaw (McClellanville) in the north.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

We are going to be continuing to work on our current house up Hwy 41 on the first Saturday of the month during the summer. When we worked in May we were told the house is at the halfway mark, so maybe with a lot of help we can be a part of getting a family in their new home before school starts. These Saturdays of working together are a wonderful way to show God's Love and have a great time with lots of new friends. Neila Stroman will keep us posted on the workdays. Please come join us.....

SHELTER MEALS

Each month Sunrise serves a meal at the Crisis Ministry on Meeting Street. June 27th, and August 22nd we will be at the Women's and Family Shelter. July 26th and Sept 27th we will be at the Men's Shelter. We always need contributions of ground beef for the Men's Shelter, which can be left at the church in the refrigerator the week of the meal. For the family shelter we need desserts, which can be left in the kitchen on Tues or Wed the week of the meal. WE ALWAYS NEED VOLUNTEERS....For more information on the Men's Shelter contact Johnny Myatt (225-3720). For the Women's and Family Shelter June Dawson (886-6655) is the contact person.

SPECIAL OFFERINGS

In addition to the Hands of Christ collection in June, on July 8th the Mission Committee will give out grocery bags for ECCO that will be returned on July 15th. On September 9th we will have a special offering for the Thornwell Home in Clinton SC. This home is a Presbyterian home that meets the needs of children from all over the state that are in crisis and need a home and support. As you can see there are many opportunities ahead to share God's Love and Message to people who need us right here at home. Vance reminds us that we are the face and hands of Christ to strangers, and what we do can change what is happening in their lives with even the smallest gestures of love...

Those on the immediate care list will be removed after three (3) months but can be added to the ongoing list by calling Peggy Wolford (886-6516). We will also be asking for the address of the person that you are requesting prayers for, so that we may send them a card, letting them know that the members of Sunrise are praying for them.
