How to engageHow to engage them?
• PhDs when you can get to them – can see the benefits.
• How do you get to the PhDs?
• Through their PIs.• PIs – don’t typically have these skills – and it hasn’tstopped them…
You have to convince the PI that they will benefitthey will benefit.
• R2I and subsequent programmes like ICURe all have q p gto sell the benefits of their PhD or Post Doc’s training – to the PIs – not the PhD/Post Docs.
• Evidence from R2I and ICURe shows;• Highly skilled researchers who can communicate with industry become advocates for their research.
• Open up new opportunities for their research.C k f ll b i• Create new networks for collaboration /commercialisation

IPOS Impacts

IPOS Impacts
• ICURe still has a positive effect when participants have completed complementary programmes, though this effect is smaller than for h h h b k d ( h b d)those without this background (as might be expected).
• Evidence from the case studies suggested that participation in R2I provided ECRs with experience in contacting prospective customers about a technology and encouraged ECRs to be in regular contact with their TTO representative.
• These precursory activities gave participants a basic understandingThese precursory activities gave participants a basic understanding of commercialisation activity which made assimilation during the programme more efficientprogramme more efficient.
IPOS Impacts

programme.
• Where participating teams had ECRs that participated in the R2I
programme, the likelihood of commercialisation rose to 54%
(relative to 39% if the ECR had not participated in R2I).
Th R2I it lf l d t h i fl d th• The R2I programme itself also appeared to have influenced the
likelihood non‐participating teams achieving a commercialisation
result
(40% for non‐participating teams that took part in R2I relative to 6%
of non‐participants that did not).
G i f dGoing forward
• Creating suites of programmes that are stand alone or feed into ICURe.
• Delivering “one day” intensiveDelivering one day intensive action learning about principles and practice of customer discovery and validation
• Running mini ICURe programmes g p gwith smaller budgets for very targeted teams
Evaluation modelsEvaluation models developed
• Existing models of entrepreneurial intent (Ajzen et al 2009; Linan et l 2011)al 2011)
• Used in Universities and other contexts (Newbery et alcontexts (Newbery et al 2015; Newbery 2015)
• We started with Entrepreneurial pIntent and developed a new Commericialising Intent measure
