It’s your civic duty as an NVSC citizen. Vote!

NVSC Board of Directors Election

For Vice President Sherri Wildoner

It would be my honor to serve once again as your NVSC Vice President for 2020. I’ve been a club member just over 6 years. I am a dance committee member and coordinated the wine tasting and auction for Capital Caring.

I’ve served as the VP, Secretary and the charity fundraising chairperson for 3 years. I will continue to share gather ideas from my travels and work with the board to develop activities, operational modifications, and other such actions that benefit the NVSC membership and club goals. Thank you!

For Secretary Linda Barna

I’m Linda Barna, I was the 2018 and 2019 Shag Club Secretary and I’m running again. I’ve been a member of the Club since 2010. I love to dance, I enjoy seeing everyone each Wednesday and I’d like to volunteer to keep the good

times going. Please vote for me for Secretary. For Treasurer Mark Hendrickson

I am Mark Hendrickson your nominee for re-election for the Treasurer’s position.I have been a NVSC member since 2006. I have been the NVSC Treasurer for several years. Before I became treasurer, I was an at-large director

on the board for two years, with primary responsibilities being the coordinator of the NVSC by-laws revision and audit committee liaison. Day to day, I work for a FAA contractor resolving program management issues related to the safety of the National Airspace System. The board of directors will face many challenges next year. My experience as the NVSC treasurer over the past several years, especially in projecting revenues and expenses for future events, will be a stabilizing influence for NVSC going forward into 2020. I would appreciate your vote on November 20.

For President Bonnie Arms

I respectfully request your vote for the position of President, Northern Virginia Shag Club (NVSC) 2020. I have been dancing various dances for many decades and Shag dancing is my most favorite dance of all. I enjoy

the positiveness NVSC projects and the friendship that is evident whenever we are together for any type of function. I enjoy sharing my love/knowledge of the dance and information about NVSC with unwitting folks.

I am currently serving a second term as President, NVSC. I served as Vice President, NVSC for two (2) years. I also served as Secretary, NVSC for two (2) years. I have served on the NVSC Nominating Committee three (3) times. I have been the NVSC Membership Chair Person for seven (8) years now. I love this position plus I have the added benefit of welcoming new folks into our club. I handled the vendors at our 2013 20th Anniversary Capital Classic plus the vendors for the 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 Classics. I was honored to be chosen the NVSC Shagger of the Year for 2014. I help manage the Front Desk on Wednesday nights. I have been a member of NVSC since 1998 with a 5½ yr. break when I lived overseas. I have worked for the Federal Government for 32 yrs. plus. While in college, I was Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary of my sorority.

The election will be on November 20 at the Elks Lodge. Voting will occur between 7:00 and 9:00 pm. Club members are encouraged to vote in-person at Elks Lodge. For Directors at Large

Director-At-Large Pamela Alfano

Since joining the Northern Virginia Shag Club in 1996, I have served on the Board as President in 2002 and 2003, Vice President in 2001, Secretary in 1999, and Director at large in 2000, 2007- 2009 and 2014-2018. I have Chaired the

Search Committee, Fundraising Committee and Decorations Committee, co-chaired the 2008 Capital Shag Classic, and 2009 and 2011 Shag-A-Thons. I have been an active member of the Dance Committee since 1999, served as Dance Committee Chair for the past several years, and on the Dance Subcommittee to assist in revising the dance instruction program and manual. NVSC is a great club and an important part of my life. I am running for Director-At-Large so that I can continue to do my part to ensure that the Club continues to grow and thrive.

Director-At-Large John Dent

I am running for a second term as a Director at Large for the Northern Va. Shag Club. Having been a member with my wife Barbara for 6 years, we have enjoyed the hard work and volunteer commitments of Directors and members and feel

like it is time for us to join in the efforts to help NVSC grow. Barbara and I would like to thank Jack and Estelle Jones for introducing us to shag music and I would like to continue the favor in introducing others to the music. After a year of service this year as a Director, I will continue to work hard at growing our shag club, and be an integral part of our management team.

Director-at-Large Barbara Ebersole

I am Barbara Ebersole and am a native of Northern Virginia and joined the NVSC in October 2014 (thanks to Linda & David Barna). Since then I've volunteered to help our club whenever possible. I assumed the position on the

Board as a Director-at-Large following the untimely passing of Ken Gibbs in December 2018. It is vital for our club to balance tradition with new ideas to help increase our membership and attendance. This can only be achieved by being open to ideas and suggestions from all members! Therefore, it is my hope to continue serving our club by continuing in the position of Director-at-Large.

Director-at-Large Jack Evan Jones

I am a retired Federal Govt employee and worked as an IT manager. My wife Estelle and I have been members of the club for about 12 years. I enjoy helping out the club and did serve as the Webmaster for the club’s website for a few years.

In addition, I first served on the board as a Director at Large during 2012 and served during this past year. I would like to repeat this experience as a means to continue to support the club goals and the preservation of the Carolina Shag dance.

Director-at-Large Jim Scanlon

Jim Scanlon, aka Ziggy Aloebaum; staunch defender of the right to pursue the opposite sex without expectation of success. Other than that, just a nice guy.

Director-at-Large Sue Young

Hard to believe I have served on the board for the past 11 years. I am running for re-election so that I can continue to share my experience as both a longtime active member and organizer of club events. I would be honored

to have your vote!

Nip and tuck causes Ziggy to duck.

ZIGGY ALOEBAUM It sure was good coming back home to Chartreuse, NC; a chance to renew old acquaintances and be amazed at how much we

all have changed over the years. Since it was Sunday, I went to the Second Baptist Congregation church on Beauregard Street. Nothing had changed, the Reverend Benny Beardstain was still conducting the services. And Sally Glowteeth was still leading the choir. I got there early to ensure I had a seat in the rear so I could observe others as they came in. To my surprise, I only saw one other person I knew, Betty Bellbottom.

I didn’t realize how long I had been away from church. I fumbled through the hymn book, never finding the right page until the hymn was almost over, so I faked my singing to look like I was a regular congregant. I didn’t fake it when they passed the plate though, I put a twenty on it (and acted like it is something I always do). Pastor Beardstain’s sermon was about promiscuity, which made me feel a bit uncomfortable, but I nodded approval and even added a hallelujah now and than. When the service was over I queued out and stopped in the foyer to make some small talk with attendees, neither the Rev nor the choir gal knew me, so I just chatted with who ever was available. Then I noticed an attractive woman who was not engaged in conversation with anyone. I wonder why I had not noticed her during the service, something that ole Ziggy would never have missed. So I introduced myself and she said: “I’m Jenny Hourglass.” And

that she was well proportioned, above and below. There is something to be said about getting

older, one mellows a bit, even ole Ziggy. I told Jenny that I was reared in Chartreuse and had been away for some time. Jenny said that she had also been away because of job opportunities, and that she was just visiting. I told her I was staying at the Waterfall Inn and she said she was also staying there, which not much a coincidence because there are only two hotels in the area. I said: “Maybe we can take advantage of Happy Hour there this evening; oops, I forgot, you’re Baptist.” She said, “Yes, but maybe I can make an exception for this evening.” Wow! My

kind of gal! We had a lot of laughs at Happy

Hour reminiscing about our youthful escapades in Chartreuse. But those memories revealed that she was much older than me, but she didn’t look it. That caused me to give her a closer look. I could see that she had some plastic surgery done at several places on her face, and that was a clue to why the upper part of the hourglass might have gotten that way, but I wondered why she had not had liposuction for the lower part. This caused me to be wary of any romantic possibilities. And Ziggy has principles, one of which is: When in doubt, ease out. So that is what I did, after a couple a drinks I said that I had to leave early in the morning and better be heading up to my room. She looked

at me with that expression as if to say, “Do you know what you could be missing?” Ziggy knew. He said “Yes, but sometimes it is better to abstain, to prepare for a more meaningful relationship.” Chivalry is not dead! Not that that has anything to do with it. Ziggy is a weird duck.

The sermon about promiscuity made me feel a bit uncomfortable but I nodded approval…

WINE TASTING AND AUCTION

Vino, vino, vino…where there’s wine, there are shaggers!

A big thank you to Jim Scanlon for hosting our 4th annual Wine Tasting & Auction to support Capital Caring. Although the rain

may have played a small part in the smaller than expected crowd, it was fun chatting and enjoying a relaxing social over tasty appetizers and nice variety of wines.

It was my pleasure and honor to once again play auctioneer, with continued support from Jason and other members of the group. In reviewing my notes from last year, it is fun to see that most of the wines were different even though most of the core group were in attendance. The Dry Mill 2013 Cabernet Franc made an appearance again this year thanks to Jason & Jeanne Potter. It was the wine that fetched the highest bid last year of $85, going to Mark Hendrickson; this year this smooth red wine, the last bottle we will likely see, pulled a fabulous $110 thanks to Pamela Alfano. Another Dry Mill red joined the party - the 2014 Merlot was won by Donna Romito and tied with the 2015 Bordeaux Fransoc that went to Sue Young, each at $80. This

year, we also had a phone bidder (long time friend of the club, Jewell Pradier) who won 2 of the bottles of wine.  Needless to say, although it may have been a smaller group, the crowd was extremely generous, beating our total last year of $602 ($650 with the additional donations included with payments) with a total this year of $780 ($875 with additional donations.)

The crowd echos my sentiment in looking forward to gathering once again next fall in the relaxed social setting when we will enjoy several more rounds of friendly competition to win a favorite wine (or two), not only to benefit Capital Caring but also enjoy the company of our shag family and friends.

Maybe you’ll join us next year. Until then, best wishes for healthy, happy, memorable holidays with family and friends. With gratitude, Sherri

Clockwise from top left: The group gathers for some relaxing and conversation; the wine selection and bid sheets; wines on ice; tasting the goodies; Bee winning the Trump wine!
