I recently returned from a trip to New Zealand, and I cannot encourage you

all enough to visit. New Zealand is a truly remarkable country with natural

wonder. One of the last landmasses on earth to be settled, it is similar in

size to Colorado or Iceland. Two main islands, the North Island and the

South Island, comprise most of the country. There are many smaller islands,

including Stewart Island, that complete the pieces of the country’s puzzle.

The North Island, or in Maori, Te Ika-a-Maui, and the South Island, or Te

Waipounamu, are home to many natural wonders. Both islands have

mountain ranges, while North Island’s is punctuated by a highly active

volcanic plateau and New Zealand’s largest lake, Lake Taupo. South Island is

dominated by the Southern Alps, with the tallest peak being Mount Cook at

12,218 feet (3,724 meters). Over 3,000 glaciers fill the valleys between the

mountains on South Island as they lead to the southwestern corner and a

region called Fiordland. This mostly uninhabited area features beautiful

fiords every bit as phenomenal as the ones Norway is famous for.

New Zealand’s population is roughly 4.4 million, with 3.5 million living on

the North Island and 25% of the total population living in Auckland. The

Sky Tower in Auckland is among the tallest man-made structures in the

southern hemisphere at 1,076 feet (328 meters). If you visit the 53rd level

of the tower, there are three activities awaiting you. The first option is to

walk around the exterior of the building, the second is to enjoy a lovely

meal with 360° views at the Orbit restaurant located in the tower, and the

third is to, considering New Zealand is the birthplace of organized bungee

jumping, jump off it. Despite being the most populous city and having the

international airport, Auckland is not the capital of New Zealand. This honor

belongs to Wellington, which is in the southern region of North Island.

The two islands are almost exact opposites in climate. While both islands

are temperate in the areas where they are closer together, the North

Island becomes subtropical as you travel north, and the South Island

becomes subantarctic the farther south you explore. Don’t let the cold

keep you away from the southern islands, though; many of them are

UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The economy was once almost entirely driven by wool production. However,

as global wool prices have dropped, it has shifted to dairy and wine. New

Zealand makes some of the finest wine in the world, but unfortunately

for the rest of the world, most of it stays in the country. The outstanding

Cabernets, Pinot Noirs, and Sauvignon Blancs are well worth the trip.

Whether you are looking for an active holiday full of sightseeing and

bungee jumping or a relaxing one drinking excellent wine and admiring the

pristine landscapes, New Zealand offers something for everyone. And it

may come as no surprise, but the best way to visit is by ship. It would take

at least ten flights to cover the same terrain as you would on one voyage.

Not to mention all the time you save by not checking in and out of hotels

and airlines. Instead, take that time to see the sights and enjoy yourself.

New Zealand is beautiful, and should be experienced rather than just visited.

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?From Tysse, on the island of Osterøy an hour north of Bergen, Norway.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE CHILDHOOD MEMORY?Being allowed in the wheelhouse on the local ferries to and from the

island of Osterøy, and going on boat trips on my uncle's boat.

WHEN DID YOU DECIDE YOU WANTED TO BE A CAPTAIN?I decided at the age of 5 that I wanted to become a captain, not

necessarily a cruise ship but some sort of ocean-going ship.

CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND?I went to sea for the very first time in June of 1983 as a deckhand on a

tanker. I spent some time on tankers until joining the Norwegian Navy in

1986 to do my service time of 15 months. While in the Navy I obtained

my Coastal Skipper License as well as my Truck Driver’s License. During

the evenings and weekends, I drove dump trucks on road construction

and tunnel projects. I also worked as a skipper on a local ferry during the

summer of '87 and then on weekends and holidays while attending the

Merchant Marine Academy.

In the fall of 1989, I signed on my first cruise ship as a Second Officer. I

did cruise ships for almost two years before going back to school again.

After graduating, I worked on ferries for a while before getting a job with

a tanker company and did shuttle tankers in the North Sea for over three

years. I simply got tired of the North Sea and the rough winter storms, and

since 1996 I have been permanently on a cruise ship.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF IN YOUR CAREER? YOUR PERSONAL LIFE?Being promoted to Captain, and marrying Tonya; she's my soulmate and

best friend.

WHY WERE YOU INTERESTED IN COMING TO AZAMARA CLUB CRUISES?Knowing Larry Pimentel and some of the senior management from other

companies, it was an easy decision when I got the offer. I love working

with Larry and the Team in Miami. In my role as Captain, together with the

Shipboard Management, Miami is giving us a lot of freedom in the day-to-

day operation. This makes the job even more interesting and rewarding,

and as a result, hopefully our guests are noticing the difference.

WHERE ARE YOUR FAVORITE DESTINATIONS YOU'VE TRAVELED TO?Any cruise that includes the Amalfi Coast, Venice, and down the Dalmatian

Coast, including Kotor Montenegro, Hong Kong to Singapore, the Baltic

and of course my own backyard, the Norwegian Fjords.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?Authentic people with an interesting life story like Henry Ochsner (age 92), a World War II vet I met on one of our cruises. We keep in touch and talk regularly.
