It’s Always Day One
Here at Amazon we work hard, have fun, and make history. We’re so glad
to have you join the team where you will play an important role
delighting customers. Starting Day One, you’ll get all the necessary
training and information to perform your job and stay safe while doing it.
We say ‘it’s always Day One’ because there will always be something to
learn, new skills to develop, and new ways to grow as an Amazonian.
If you have any questions, ideas, or feedback, chat with any manager, site
HR, or call the ERC. We’re all here for you – and we’re always looking at
new ways to give you a great experience.
Safety First
At Amazon, we aspire to be the most safety-centric organization in the world. Safety
begins with each of us, and we all have a shared responsibility to create a safe work
environment. If you see something, say something. There’s nothing more important than
taking care of each other and improving safety together.
Follow all safety protocols
When you’re on site, you’ll adhere to our safety
measures at all times. This includes wearing your face
coverings from the moment you arrive until you leave
(face masks are provided), having your temperature
taken when entering the building, and using cleaning
supplies and hand sanitizer at your work stations to
promote good hygiene. Don’t forget, it’s important to
continue these safety efforts like social distancing at
home – it’s one of the easiest and most effective ways
to protect yourself and those around you.
Sort – remove any clutter and only keep items in an
area that are needed.
Set in Order – use 5S tape to label where items go
and return items where they belong.
Shine – wipe away dust and clean up spills.
Standardize – help create and follow standard
methods for maintaining workplace organization.
Sustain – monitor and respectfully show each other
how to correct any unsafe behavior.
Focus on the 5 S’s
Gloves should be worn when handling wooden pallets, and high-visibility
vests should be worn whenever you’re within the trailer yard or PIT lanes.
Safety Tip
It’s part of our safety culture! Wear
personal protective equipment (PPE) like
vests, eyewear, face coverings, and
gloves, tie back hair past the shoulders,
wear fitted clothing, fully enclosed shoes,
lanyards with a break-away clasp, and
jewelry that doesn’t hang, and make sure
your badge is always visible and worn
between the waist and shoulder.
Follow the dress code
Dynamic stretching is a muscle stretch that is
meant to get the body warmed up, like when
you do arm circles or lunges.
Static stretching is when you stretch the muscle
to its full length and hold it, like when you do a
triceps or hamstring stretch. It is best to use this
type of stretch throughout the workday when
the body is already warmed up.
Know when to use the two
types of stretching
Safety First
If you’re unsure of the PPE requirements or can’t find the correct
PPE for a particular task, ask your manager for assistance.

Stay safe in parking lots by obeying signs
and speed limits, and by staying alert when
walking or driving. Don’t text or talk on the
phone, and always use safe walking paths.
Safety First
Visit our onsite medical center, AMCare,
located inside our building, if you’re not
feeling well.
Report any suspicious activity to the
Security Team located at the Main
Entrance and fill out an Incident Report.
Pause at the end of aisles, look both ways, and announce,
"CORNER" before proceeding.
Safety Tip
Safety First
We know it's important to stay connected to family and friends for emergencies, but nothing
is more important than your safety.

Whether you’re checking in loads in the guard shack,
inspecting trailers or completing an audit, everything in
the TOM domain is done in the name of safety. This
includes communicating yard rules to third party drivers
and other vendors that are regularly sharing the yard
with TOM teams. Taking an active role in safety
measures, such as serving as spotter or escalating
defects, helps Amazon ensure loads travel smoothly
between facilities and eventually to our customers.
Delivering Smiles
As Earth’s most customer-centric company, every item that passes through our sites gives
us the unique opportunity to work together as a team. From receive to ship, it’s important
that every process path is operating with not only the customer in mind, but the entire
team who helps bring the fulfillment process to life.
As you work, please flag
any barriers so we can
remove them and give
you support to perform
at your best.
Safety is paramount in the yard
Our fulfillment process
Please note, site types vary and no two TOM yards are the same. This visual simplifies a generic yard and process
flow but is not necessarily representative of the yard you’ll be working in.
Learn the
Lingo!
Throughout your training, you will
see and hear words and phrases
that are peculiar to the Amazon
culture. Before you get started, we
want to introduce you to these
terms so you can understand our
peculiar ways.
Box Truck
A cargo truck with a box affixed
(no trailer).
CDL
Commercial Driver’s License.
Required for semi trucks and
other large commercial vehicles.
A CDL is not required for driving
within the yard.
CMV
Commercial vehicle as defined by
DOT. These require a commercial
driver’s license (CDL) to operate.
CPT (Critical Pull Time)
You’ll often hear peers speak
about ‘making CPT.’ A CPT is the
time when an outbound truck’s
doors close, the last possible time
to get a customer’s package
loaded onto that track to ensure
we fulfill the customer promise.
Here at Amazon, we obsess about
our customers, both internal and
external! CPT is a busy time, but
also a time when all departments
come together to make sure we
safely ensure all our customers
packages are delivered.
Day Cab
A tractor used to move and
transport trailers on public roads.
DOT
Department of Transportation,
the U.S. regulatory body
governing all over-the-road
operations.
Feedback
We have a standard way of
communicating when
Amazonians are meeting or
exceeding expectations, as well
as if they’re not meeting
expectations. While we all make
mistakes, it’s important to take
the feedback, ask questions if
you’re unsure how you made a
mistake, and learn how to
improve.
Guard Shack
Small building at the entrance to
a TOM yard where trucks/trailers
are checked in and out.
Hostler
Specialized tractor used for
moving trailers within a yard.
Yard
The area of the site where trailers
are stored, dropped off, picked
up and accessed via dock doors
on the building.
Peak
Peak occurs in the fourth quarter
of each calendar year. This is the
time between Black Friday
through Christmas when we all
work together to ensure
everyone’s holiday needs are
met! It is a busy time of year, but
it is truly the most fun time of
year as well. You might hear that
an Amazonian’s tenure is not just
measured in years but in the
number of peaks completed.
Prime / Prime Day
An annual sales event bringing
special savings to our customers.
This event requires all team
within amazon to coordinate,
plan, and execute at the
increased volume level.
Standard Work
For any process you’re trained in,
you’ll be shown how to perform
the process following certain
steps in a specific order that,
combined, make up the standard
work for that process. Every role
also has standard work to follow
which includes checklists for
what should be completed on an
hourly, daily, or weekly basis.
