Faced with the need to pump and cool water in a broad range of applications, including rides, pools, marine habitats and landscape features, the engineers of the Atlantis Resort turned to ITT to address their diverse needs. Part water theme park and part aquarium, the Atlantis resort on Paradise Island in the Bahamas has the most elaborate water-based infrastructure of any resort in the world. The exquisitely engi- neered grounds include swimming pools, water slides, aquatic wildlife exhibits, waterfalls, streams and lagoons. In a most unique blending of the many types of attractions, visitors can slide and float right through several of the marine life exhibits, including a tank filled with live sharks. In one such exhibit, swimmers float down a lazy river in inner tubes. The river winds its way through the middle of a huge fish tank, using a tank-within-a-tank to keep the guests separate from the fish. In another, a cylindrical tube at the bottom of a five story vertical-drop water slide shoots people through the center of a tank full of sharks. In both cases, the fish are protected from the people, who are kept safely enclosed in their own glass passages. New attractions currently under construction and due for completion in 2007 will include an even higher water slide and a snorkeling lagoon where swimmers will be able to dive right along with the tamer species of fish that inhabit the aquatic exhibits. Moving 110,000 GPM With a Single Vendor The engineers of Atlantis have successfully addressed the daunting task of pumping huge volumes of water through this sophisticated col- lection of aquatic exhibits and water rides. Each day the pumps of Atlantis move enough water to fill 250 Olympic-sized swimming pools; or about one pool filled every five minutes. In addition to moving all that water day after day, the pumps endure the heavily corrosive effects of salt water in the fish tanks and chlorinated water in the swimming pools and rides. To address their needs for sophisticated, high- capacity water pumping equipment, the Atlantis engineers turned to ITT's wide range of pump sys- tems. First in 1999 and then again in 2005 for another phase of construction, the Atlantis team chose pumps from ITT's Marlow, Flygt, A-C and Goulds brands, as well as heat exchangers from ITT's Bell & Gossett brand, to enable them to address their wide range of needs with the con- venience and flexibility of working with one ven- dor for the entire project. The Marlow, A-C, and Flygt brands are used to pump water through filtration and chlorination systems as well as through ozonators. In addition to being used as circulation pumps for the resort's many pools, Marlow pumps also power the lazy rivers, many water slides as well as water features such as waterfalls, fountains and spray pads for the younger guests. Moving 110,000 GPM With a Single Vendor

The engineers of Atlantis have successfullyaddressed the daunting task of pumping hugevolumes of water through this sophisticated col-lection of aquatic exhibits and water rides. Eachday the pumps of Atlantis move enough water tofill 250 Olympic-sized swimming pools; or aboutone pool filled every five minutes. In addition tomoving all that water day after day, the pumps

endure the heavily corrosive effects of salt waterin the fish tanks and chlorinated water in theswimming pools and rides.

To address their needs for sophisticated, high-capacity water pumping equipment, the Atlantisengineers turned to ITT's wide range of pump sys-tems. First in 1999 and then again in 2005 foranother phase of construction, the Atlantis teamchose pumps from ITT's Marlow, Flygt, A-C andGoulds brands, as well as heat exchangers fromITT's Bell & Gossett brand, to enable them toaddress their wide range of needs with the con-venience and flexibility of working with one ven-dor for the entire project.

The Marlow, A-C, and Flygt brands are used topump water through filtration and chlorinationsystems as well as through ozonators. In additionto being used as circulation pumps for theresort's many pools, Marlow pumps also powerthe lazy rivers, many water slides as well as waterfeatures such as waterfalls, fountains and spraypads for the younger guests. Goulds brand sub-mersible sump pumps are used to keep the pumprooms dry.

When the newest phase of construction is com-pleted in 2007, Atlantis will use over 80 ITT brandpumps that together will move over 110,000 gal-lons per minute, which is about one millionpounds of water per minute.

In addition to one-vendor convenience, ITT brandpumps offer Atlantis products designed for theresort's long duty cycles and ease of maintenancefor applications where sand is likely to get intothe water. Seal wells are an open chamber designthat does not allow sand to build up and wearout seals like traditional stuffing box designs do.Footed-volute designs allow for much simplerrepair versus overhung volute designs that causealignment problems when reassembling thepumps. And a forgiving coupling allows for loos-er alignment tolerance, extending both bearingand seal life.

A Wide Range of Applications

One example of an unusual application for the

ITT products is the new "Master Blaster" waterslide that Atlantis is adding to the resort. Thiswater slide is essentially a roller coaster madewith rapidly moving water. Unlike traditionalwater slides, the Mater Blaster uses high power, high volume water pumps to push riders up theslide against the flow of gravity, for a true up anddown roller coaster-like ride along the length ofthe slide. ITT's Marlow brand pumps provide thewater for riders going down the slide, and theirhigher flow/higher pressure pumps create theneeded boost that pushes the riders up the slideonce they reach the bottom. These high-volumeMarlow pumps create enough water pressurethrough strategically placed nozzles that propelthe riders up the other side of the slide like aroller coaster ride, allowing Atlantis to offer thisnew kind of water-based thrill.

Another application for the ITT family of productsis the use of high flow, very low head sub-mersible pumps that are being used in a flowchannel to move people from one location toanother through the "Lazy River" system. Here,ITT's Flygt division had just the right pumps to fitAtlantis' requirements to float guests in innertubes along a long, winding "pool" that traversesthe well-planted landscape and a portion of theshark exhibit.

When the new phase of construction is complet-ed in 2007, resort visitors will also be able toswim with the dolphins in a new “DolphinEncounter” lagoon. ITT's Bell & Gossett brandtitanium plate and frame heat exchangers arebeing used for this sea water application. Theheat exchangers will help cool the water duringthe hot Bahamian summers so that the dolphinsdon't overheat. B&G plate and frame stainlesssteel heat exchangers are also being installed onpools and water features that use chlorinatedpool water, cooling down those applications sothat resort guests stay as comfortable as the dol-phins.
