The Paradox

It’s Not About the Resume

(but It’s All About the Resume)

A great resume creates no questions

A great resume tells the reader exactly what they need to know

A great resume has no red flags, is easy to skim and highlights the important, critical areas

A great resume is strategic and it becomes a roadmap for your interviews

A great resume is almost always created by a certified professional

What Makes a Resume Good or Bad

What Makes a Resume Good or Bad

A bad resume doesn’t answer the readers questions

A bad resume is difficult to “wade” through

A bad resume has errors and mistakes

A bad resume has formatting issues

A bad resume raises eyebrows

A bad resume is usually written with the input from a group (friends, family, colleagues)

A bad resume keeps you from getting interviews

How Many Types of Bad Resumes Are There?

Ivy Exec sees100’s of resumes each day

3 out of 10 are good and less than 1 out of 10 are outstanding

About 30% of executives are choosing to get professional assistance with their resumes

That leaves the other 70%. Almost all of those resumes have some problems.

While some problems are worse than others, they are all undesirable in a critical job search

Many People View the Resume as a Necessary Evil

Because….

• They are no fun to do

• There are a million opinions about resumes out there

• You hear a lot of noise that they are “old-fashioned”

• One doesn’t seem to get the response they expect from sending a resume anymore

Page 12: Ivy Exec Webinar: Effective Resumes for Career Transitions · •If you cannot afford to have your resume done professionally seek help elsewhere. Oftentimes, State Career Centers,

The Ten Types of Resumes I See

1. The Cloud – Too much white space makes you look “lightweight” (no interview)

2. The Generic - Looks like everyone else’s and fails to get you noticed (no interview)

3. The Job Description – Reads like a job posting and tells nothing unique about you (no interview)

4. The Wreck – Poor grammar and misspelling doom you from the start (no interview)

5. The Minimalist – Not nearly enough information to get the reader interested (no interview)

6. The Maximist – Way too much information about you; the reader gives up trying to figure you out (no interview)

7. The Generalist – What do you do? The reader has no idea what job to match you to (no interview)

10.The Tombstone – It’s really all in the past (no interview once again)

Some of my Thoughts

• If you can afford a professionally written resume

it will be the best investment you make in

yourself

• The opportunity cost of using a bad resume can

run in the tens of thousands of dollars

• More and more job seekers are getting

professional assistance making the job search

climate hyper-competitive

• Good enough doesn’t cut it anymore

Page 39: Ivy Exec Webinar: Effective Resumes for Career Transitions · •If you cannot afford to have your resume done professionally seek help elsewhere. Oftentimes, State Career Centers,

Some of my Thoughts

• You can of course, get away with sending a bad

resume to a less desirable company but is that

really your objective?

• If you cannot afford to have your resume done

professionally seek help elsewhere. Oftentimes,

State Career Centers, local libraries, and some

job fairs have assistance available

• Remember that job search expenses are usually

tax deductible but check with your accountant
