WHAT’S ON MONDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 2016 By Faten Omar T he International Women’s Group (IWG) held a meeting yesterday at Radisson SAS Hotel. This meeting was a pre- cursor to the occasions of the Independence and National day of Kuwait as well as the Valentine’s day. Narjes Al-Shatti, Board Member of the International Women’s Group, said to Kuwait Times that “Every February we con- duct programs to celebrate Independence and National day as well as the Valentine ‘s Day by giving our guests a flower. We gath- ered here wearing our traditional dress ‘Thoub’ with the Ambassadors’ wives. This year the British school of Kuwait (BSK) is joining us with Dr Ahmed Al-Shatti. Finally we are praying to God to protect Kuwait.” The British school of Kuwait (BSK) was invited by the International Women’s Group to give a presentation at the February meeting to celebrate Kuwait’s National Day. The presentation was led by BSK’s Deputy Director of Finance, Sanaa Kamelia Al- Mutawa, an IWG member and ably support- ed by Anwahar Al-Hasan. The theme of the presentation was a tra- ditional Kuwaiti wedding performed by 25 students from 9th grade. The performance covered the various features of the wed- ding rituals from the initial engagement, the Dezza, the singing of the marriage con- tract, the arrival of the bride on the wed- ding day, the Jelwa and finally to the arrival of the groom. As the students divided into the supporters of the bride and the sup- porters of the groom and moved through the ceremony with their fine clothes and wedding gifts the audience was transport- ed into another era and marveled at the magnificence of the performance and how many aspects of the rituals differed or com- pared with their own traditions and cus- toms. The presentation closed with the a National anthem and the audience were invited to join the performers in celebrat- ing Kuwait’s National Day with flag waving and some traditional wedding cake gers ogaily.
