Welcome Hi Everyone
It’s been another great fortnight with residents exploring the Top End. The day trip to the Territory Wildlife Park proved to be a hit as always and it seems a lot of you are trying to fit in as much ‘fun time’ as you can before the exam period sets in. Make sure you get involved in as many activities as you can this fortnight as we will soon start to wind down to pave way for your study period. Exams start at the end of this month so please be considerate of those studying at different times to you. We will again have our usual quiet time from the end of semester where noise will not be tolerated. Have a great fortnight and remember to keep everything in your life balanced.

ANZAC Day On ANZAC day we paid tribute to fallen and the returned soldiers, sailors and airman, that
fought for us almost a hundred years ago. It was great to see both Australian and international
students getting involved in tradition of the dawn service. We all set aside our personal and
cultural differences to commentate the ANZAC’s and all
they’ve done for us.
As an ANZAC day tradition we returned to IHD to a gun fire
breakfast, minus the rum. Where we sat around
swapping our own war stories.
We honor our heroes.
Coffee & Cake
French Night
Two wonderful French residents at IHD, Claire Girette & Emilie Filoche
volunteered a couple weeks back to make crepes for the residents here and how
could we ever pass up such an offer?! On the 23rd
of April 2013 French Coffee &
Cake kicked off with Claire welcoming the 30 residents present, in French to the
event. With the crepes the girls had made we threw in some Nutella and Jam for
the residents to go crazy with.
By the time the clock struck 9 o’clock, crepes were all gone but every resident
present in the room had a smile on their face. Thanks Claire and Emilie for
sharing your cuisine with us and IHD would like to welcome residents to put up
their hands and let us know if they are interested in doing something like this. For
all the IHD residents we have a treat for the next coffee and cake, its Coffee &
Cake Special Edition straight from Hungary! So make your to the Red Room
sharp at 8:00pm on the 7th of May 2013.

IHD Soccer Grand Final Like any epic game of soccer there is the need for two great teams, it was the IHD residents’ good
fortune that we had Korea, the two time champions, up against the hot favourites for the tournament,
Blackzilians! The game kicked off at 6:15pm with both teams going at full throttle, Blackzilians took a
2-0 lead in the first half of normal time – only to have Korea draw level at the end of the second half.
The match went into extra time were both teams looked worn out when out of the blue the Blackzilians’
captain Francisco scored with a long range effort past Kingman to break the hearts of Team Korea and
their fans! It was a great end to the finale of the IHD Indoor Soccer World Cup with the Blackzilians
being crowned Champions Sem1 2013!
A big THANK YOU goes out from the RL Events team to IHD’s manager Dean Preddy, who came down
with his family to watch the game and hand out the trophy. That’s not all there, THANK YOU to others
who helped behind the scenes, IHD’s ALCC James Jeffress with all the equipment and catering, Rosie
King with all the promotion, the Duty RL (Adeel Silat) and of course to all the residents who participated
in the event and residents who came down to show support to their fellow residents!
CRICKET
Just because the IHD soccer world cup is finished doesn’t mean you can get your sports fix. IHD is hosting
Sunday Cricket during the dry on the IHD Central Lawns. Check out our up-coming events for more details.

Touch Football
Thirty residents walked the bush track to Dripstone Beach to indulge in a game of Touch Footy last
Saturday afternoon in glorious conditions. The sun was shining, the sand was soft, and our German
residents were on fire combining to out run and out pass any opponent – no matter what set of rules
were given to them. Fun was had by all who played and spectated and the game was followed by a
beach style dinner of snags in bread. Thanks to all those that attended and helped bring the
equipment from the car park to the beach and vice versa. And to our Cambodian friends who had a
torch on their phone to help the chefs see if the dinner was cooked. Many hands made light work.
Territory Wildlife Park
IHD had a great trip to the Territory Wildlife Park last
Saturday. We had a chance to see wildlife up-close in their
natural habitats. We could walk through the tree top
aviaries, interacting with them during the presentations.
The walk-through aquarium was a big hit and was
everyone’s favourite, especially, the sawfish, turtles and
the saltwater crocodile.
We had a close look at the Top End’s famous flora and fauna as well. Everyone had great fun
and IHD glorified our exhausting day with a real Aussie BBQ at the end. We’re looking forward
to see you guys on our next IHD trip.

20 speech pathologists and two occupational therapists from
Sydney will be staying at International House Darwin over the
next few months. These students are on placements with the
Education Speech Pathology & Therapy Services (ESP&TS)
school.
ESP&TS recently established a school based speech pathologist
in four Darwin schools and these students will be working directly
with this clinician meaning they will receive on the ground
supervision during their block placements. The response from the
schools so far has been overwhelmingly positive.
