Solemnity of Mary

O n New Year's Day, the oc-tave day of Christmas, the Church celebrates the So-

lemnity of the Holy Mother of God, the divine and virginal motherhood of the Blessed Virgin.

It is the highest title of the Blessed Virgin Mary: Theotokos, Mother of God. This title was given to Mary at the Council of Ephesus in 431 A.D. The council taught, however, that the humanity and divinity of Jesus could not be separated and that they exist in one person, with the momentous implication that we can rightly give Mary the title of Mother of God.

This feast is the celebration of Mary’s motherhood of Jesus and is the oldest feast of Mary celebrated by the Catholic Church. Mary has an important role to play in the Incarnation of the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity. She consents to God’s invitation conveyed by the angel (Luke 1:2638).

Elizabeth proclaims: “Most blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.

Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled." And Mary said: "My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God, my Savior.

Father, Source of Light in every age, the Virgin conceived and bore Your Son

who is called Wonderful God, Prince of Peace. May her prayer, the gift of a mother's love,

be Your people's joy through all ages. May her response, born of a humble heart,

draw Your Spirit to rest on Your people. Grant this through Christ, Our Lord.

~ Amen.

As always, concerts are free, but donations are appreciated.

Please Join us, All Are Welcome!

Peace, Hope, Joy & Love This year, our vision of Mary, the young virgin mother of Jesus, Loving-ly tending her Child who is lying on hay in Bethlehem’s stable beaming with life, is shared by our vision of an old elderly Albanian woman in a blue

and white sari lovingly tending a malnourished child who is lying on a cot in a Calcutta clinic, clinging to life. Both of the Mothers, Mary and Teresa, and the children, as well, teach is three lessons:

That life is precious; That each and every one of us is poor, in need

of one thing or another; And that each and every one of us is needed by

someone or another.

In learning these lessons, we open our hearts and minds to receive the Lord’s gifts of Peace, Hope, Joy and Love!

Page 4: J 1, 2017 · old elderly Albanian woman in a blue and white sari lovingly tending a malnourished child who is lying on a cot in a alcutta clinic, clinging to life. oth of the Mothers,

Food Pantry Needs Our parish pantry is in need of non-perishable proteins. These items include, but are not limited to: SPAM, Vienna Sausages, Canned Tuna, Canned Chicken Breast, Chili with Meat and Soups containing meat. We could also use peanut butter and boxed milk such as Parmalat. For liability reasons, we cannot accept any expired or opened items. Please carefully inspect items prior to donation. Reusable cloth grocery bags are also a huge help. Items may be brought to Sr. Carol or the Parish office.

Thank you for helping us help others!

Elementary/Middle School Faith Formation Faith Formation is an opportunity for your child to learn about our faith in a classroom environment surrounded by other kids their own age and faith. Our program has grown in number due to our parish’s faithfulness and enthusi-

asm. We currently offer two sessions for Kindergar-ten through 5th grades and one session for 6-8 grades. They are held on Wednesdays, session 1 is from 4:30-5:45pm and session 2 is from 6:15-7:30pm at Summerville Catholic School.

Our curriculum is Loyola Press, Christ Our Life. Each week your child will learn something about their Catholic Faith. We hope you will join us for this wonderful and meaningful educational experience.

For more information about any of our Faith For-mation Programs please contact Jan Antor, Director of Faith Formation, at:

636-248-6460 or [email protected].

Early Childhood Faith Formation Early Childhood is for ages 1-5 years of age. We gather each Sunday at the 9:30 or 11:30 Masses in Madden Hall (building up the hill from the church).

We do not take attendance, so you can attend either the 9:30 OR 11:30 Mass and don't have to attend the same one every week. We do the SAME lesson for both Masses. Know that we are flexible and each week DOES NOT build on the previous weeks. Each week when you ar-rive, you will need to sign your child in and make him/her a name tag when dropping them off.

Registration forms are available to the parish web-site or you can pick them up in the Early Childhood Room located in Madden Hall. If you have any questions please call Jan Antor, Early Childhood Coordinator at:

636-248-6460 or [email protected].

LITURGY OF THE WORD FOR CHILDREN Children's Liturgy of the Word (CLW) is a liturgical experience geared especially for children kindergarten to 4th grade. It mir-rors the liturgy experience of the larger community in an engaging and interactive style.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word is not formal reli-gious education, nor is it intended to substitute for attendance at religious education sessions. Rather, it should be considered a partner to your child's continuing religious formation. We offer CLW at 9:30AM AND 11:30AM Sunday Masses on all week-ends through the year.

For more information please contact Jan Antor at: 636-248-6460 or [email protected].

Scripture Reflection

T he blessing included in the First Reading from the Book of

Numbers is one with which most of us are familiar. “The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord let His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you…” In the Jewish culture this has been known for centuries as the Aaronic blessing as it was dictated by God Himself to Aaron. It is important to note that it begins with “The Lord bless you.”

All blessings come from God. One error we make is to conclude that blessings always mean happiness or security or prosperity. God knows what blessings we need, even if we do not. They key for us is to be grateful for whatever blessings we may have. That mind set is at the hub of stewardship — knowing all blessings come from the Lord, and our need to be appreciative of them.

To be “kept” by the Lord is to turn our lives over to Him, to know that He is with us and that He loves us, blesses us, and does indeed “keep” us ever in His care. The truth is that to be blessed by God is one of the great-est gifts we can receive. It is available to all of us without exception.

During this continued Christmas season, it is well to remember and repeat the classic statement by the char-acter Tiny Tim in Charles Dickens’ immortal A Christmas Carol: “God bless us, every one,” for certainly He does.
