Buy you a drink?

Tradition has it that Isaac met Rebekah at a well, and the deal was sealed when she not only granted a drink of water when requested, but also watered his camels as well. This is part of the background for the dialogue of Jesus with the woman at the well.

How couples meet is a universal story theme. At a lunch meeting Wes Llewellyn talked about how when he was in the restaurant business and couples were reserving the dining room for a rehearsal dinner or a wedding reception he would ask, “How did you meet?” The answer often was, “In a bar.” Mary Mahar mentioned that “How did you meet?” was a good question to break the ice with couples looking to buy a house. Joining in I said that this was a question I ask of couples preparing for a wedding at the church, but they are more reluctant to say that they met over a drink.

And as the years roll on for couples there is a growing sense that whatever the circumstance of their meeting that somehow it was destiny or the will of God. When couples look back after years, experiences, family, better and worse, they often see the hand of God at work in their lives. And even with all the challenges, we generally see blessing as well. It is a good, old story.

Greeting and Welcome

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal,

that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men,

deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.

With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right,

let us strive on to finish the work we are in,

Now Isaac had come from Beer-lahai-roi, and was settled in the Negeb. Isaac went out in the evening to walk in the field; and looking up, he saw camels coming. And Rebekah looked up, and when she saw Isaac, she slipped quickly from the camel, and said to the servant, ‘Who is the man over there, walking in the field to meet us?’ The servant said, ‘It is my master.’ So she took her veil and covered herself. And the servant told Isaac all the things that he had done. Then Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent. He took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her. So Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.

The Sacrament of Holy Communion*Invitation

Katy: Beloved in Christ, the Gospel tells us that on the first day of the week Jesus Christ was raised from the death, appeared to Mary Magdalene, on the same day sat at the table with two disciples and was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.

Michael: This is the joyful feast of the people of God.

Katy: This table is for all who wish to know the presence of Christ and to share in the community of God’s people.

The Great Thanksgiving Prayer

Holy God, we thank you for Jesus. In the fullness of time, You sent him into the world because you loved the world so much You sent your only son.

Jesus emptied himself and became one of us, He ate with sinners, Talked with a woman at the well and healed the sick,

He accepted death on the cross to bring about reconciliation-- To reconcile each of us with You, holy God, And to reconcile us with each other.

We are gathered at this table in Jesus’ name To become a sign of your love in our world.

Words of Institution

We recall that Jesus took bread and thanked you for your love He broke the bread and gave it to his friends saying: Take this and share it among you. This is my body given for you.

He also took a cup of wine, Gave you praise, and shared it saying: Take this and drink from it, all of you. This is the cup of the new covenant in my blood, Shed for people everywhere. Whenever you do this, do it in memory for me.

Prayer of Consecration and Our Lord’s Prayer

Consecrate, therefore, by your Holy Spirit, these gifts of bread and wine, and bless us that as we receive them at this table, we may offer you our faith and praise, we may be united with Christ and with one another, and we may continue faithful in all things.

Let us pray as Christ our Savior has taught us.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
