2 | JULY 7, 2019 • FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

In this weekend’s Gospel, the Lord Jesus sends his followers on mission to new places to share His Gospel with new people. Consider the following top twelve list of books for great summer reading as an opportunity to welcome a fresh proposal of Christ in our spiritual life and the possibility of being introduced to some new friends in faith:

The Memoirs of St. Peter: A New Translation of the Gospel According to Mark by Michael Pakaluk. This rendering of St. Mark’s Gospel with commentary pops with the freshness, immediacy, and radicality of the original Greek text the first Christians would have heard. Counterfeit Christs: Finding the Real Jesus Among the Imposters by Trent Horn. Lots of partial and distorted popular cultural misunderstandings of Jesus are corrected by an expert defender of the Faith. A Layman’s Guide to the Liturgy of the Hours: How the Prayers of the Church Can Change Your Life by Fr. Timothy Gallagher, OMV. Fr. Gallagher gives a very accessible introduction to how to pray the Church’s universal prayer throughout the day. Spirit and Life: The Holy Sacraments of the Catholic Church by Rose Rea. This is a beautifully illustrated, richly presented exposition of the means of holiness instituted by Christ. A great gift book for those intrigued by, or newly received into, the Catholic Church. American Priest: The Ambitious Life and Conflicted Legacy of Notre Dame’s Father Ted Hesburgh by Wilson D. Miscamble, CSC. This biography is not only both a sympathetic and critical portrait of a Catholic university leader but also a fascinating meditation on the intersections of American culture with Catholic faith. Beauty: What it Is and Why it Matters by John-Mark Miravalle. The title says it all. Mornings With St. Therese: 120 Daily Readings, compiled by Patricia Treece. Wonderful breakfast reading. Knight of the Holy Ghost: A Short History of G.K. Chesterton by Dale Ahlquist. Chesterton was an early 20th century Catholic journalist and public thinker whose creative thinking and observations about what is most important in life are deep and delightful. From Fire By Water: My Journey to the Catholic Faith by Sohrab Ahmari. This contemporary journalist tells the story of how his Muslim background was transformed by his being baptized into the Catholic faith. Ahmari’s autobiography is one of the best written conversion narratives in years. The 21: A Journey into the Land of the Coptic Martyrs by Martin Mosebach. This book is a heart-piercing, riveting, and profoundly inspiring account of the lives of the 21 Christian men beheaded by ISIS militants on a Libyan beach in February 2015.

SUMMER IS ALMOST HALF OVER! Many of us made a “Summer List” a couple of months ago… the things that we were DEFINITELY going to do this summer. How are you doing on your list? What items are left? Here’s a thought… put your list side-by-side with a SCRIP order form and see how they match up! Chances are you can use SCRIP for many things on your list… home improvement, travel, graduation/wedding gifts, summer entertaining, bowling/arcade with the family, dinners out with friends, landscaping projects, matinees with the kids on those rainy days, and the list goes on. And every time you buy SCRIP, you earn profits for St. Vincent’s AND for you! Who wouldn’t like to earn while they’re shopping? Summer SCRIP sales are in full swing in the Church Office: Tuesdays 8:30-9:00 am, Thursdays Noon-1:00 pm, Saturdays after 5:00 pm Mass, Sundays 8:00-11:00 am. Please note that we do have a couple of days off: no SCRIP sales on July 6 and 7. But you can stop by ANY time and pick up an order form and get more info about SCRIP. Please contact the SCRIP Office with any questions: 489-3537, ext. 234 OR [email protected]. Thanks!

Healing Night Thursday, July 25 | 6:30 PM

St. Vincent Church All are welcome! Invite a friend!

This healing night will be led by Fr. Drew Curry, Fr. Ben Muhlenkamp, Deacon Huberto Vazquez and others. Fr. Drew will begin with a scripture meditation/reflection on healing, the obstacles to healing, and prayerful meditation to open us up to God and His healing graces. Then, priests and their prayer groups will be available to pray over people for healing as well as offering prayers for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The night will include praise music! This is an opportunity to ask God’s blessings and healing for yourself and/or those you love. You need not be Catholic or even baptized to attend.

NOTE: This evening will NOT include the opportunity for the sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. If you are Catholic and desire this sacrament, please contact the Church Office at 260-489-3537 ext. 3.

CEMETERY CARE If you have any decorations in the Parish Cemetery which have been put in the ground and are not directly on the head stone or on the cement foundation, they will need to be removed. These rules and regulations safeguard the lot holder, maintenance and the cemetery. Thank you for your cooperation.

(continued from page 2) Bakhita: A Novel of the Saint of Sudan by Veronique Olmi. St. Josephine Bakhita’s miraculously heroic life of moving from enslavement in Africa to serving the Lord in freedom with all her heart is beautifully described in this book. She died in 1947 and was canonized in 2000. The Joyful Mystery: Field Notes Toward a Green Thomism by Christopher Thompson. Thompson is a great guide to Catholic Social teaching on stewardship of creation, rooted in the teaching of St. Thomas Aquinas and developed in the papacy of Pope Francis.

Reasons 6 and 7 to choose a Catholic Education for your child:

6. We instill in students the value of service to others. 7. We teach children respect of self and others.

St. Vincent students live a life of service. Every year a charity is chosen and students participate wholeheartedly in drives, coin collections, donations and tag days to support that charity. They also learn to serve their community and their classmates when they see someone in need. We are truly the hands and feet of Jesus. Our staff encourages and models behaviors of service and respect through their words and more importantly their actions.

Tuition Collection day is July 15 from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm. You can drop your payment off at the School Office or mail it. Charisms Meetingng Charisms MeetingngMonday July 29 | 7 PM | Spiritual Center er ay July 29 | 7 PM | Spiritual Ce July 29 | 7 PM | Spirirituairitua

All charisms are welcome!

One of the hardest parts of discerning charisms is that the charisms exhibit themselves when the Holy Spirit presents an opportunity in your daily life. Whether at work, at home, in the community, or in social situations, you may find yourself having those moments where your charism is called out. Reflecting on your experiences in prayer, you will become more aware of your gifts and how you are called daily. This small group meeting is meant to provide a chance to flush out your experiences, to share insights, and get feedback. Attendees will discuss ways God has called you to use your gifts. Please plan to join us on Monday, July 29!!

The choir exhibits their charism of music, evangelism, and healing!

Many are learning how they have been

gifted! Congratulations to our latest workshop attendees!!

Interviews are going on for workshop attendees. If you would like to schedule a free, 1 hour interview, please contact the Church Office to select a date/time….260-489-3537 ext. 3. Interview preparation: Gather your inventory results, the inventory book, paper and a pen. Pray and meditate on the ways God has worked in your life… and follow the guide on pages 14-16 of the spiral workbook provided at the workshop. Reflecting on times that your spiritual gift(s) may have become evident, or reasons why you answered questions the way you did, will be discussed. In fact, reviewing pages 3-16 of the Workbook will best prepare you for the interview, and recognizing charisms.

RCIA: THE RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS Would you like to know more about the Catholic Faith? Have you been thinking about joining the Catholic Church? Are you a baptized Catholic who has not received the sacraments of Eucharist & Confirmation? If you answered “YES” to any of these questions, then you may be interested in the RCIA process. The RCIA (the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is a process for those interested in learning more about the Catholic faith and considering membership and mission in the Catholic Church. If you are interested, we would like to journey with you in this process. Formal sessions of the RCIA will begin in August. For more information, email Julia Thill at [email protected] or call 260-489-3537 ext. 208.

RCIA SPONSOR The beginning of the 2019-2020 RCIA formal teaching session year will be starting soon! Julia will review with you the guidelines and role of a Godparent/Sponsor, along with the calendar of meeting sessions you would be committing to. If you discern you are being called to this ministry, a formal sponsor training session will be held prior to the first RCIA class.

Do you struggle with fear and anxiety? College loans, weight gain, internet safety, wrinkles, retirement funds, lack of holy friendships, my kids are falling apart, where is my husband?
