Di10RIAL One Way to End Rising Taxes and Spending

Maybe you will not h a v e t o p a y taxes anymore- - someday!

Because if the present rise in spending by all government levels is n o t slowed, soon none will be left to pay taxes!

It's quite simple. We employ millions in government. The more we spend, tfie more workers it takes to process everything. Today we are blowing more than ever, what with the war and all, including flights of fancy into the deep blue yonder.

The public debt, on which we pay interest, is way up, may soon be at $400 billion, which co

.uld cause a blow-\ up. It is the largest in history, of any

nation, at any time. Our once useful gold has left Fort

Knox, and silver is getting scarcer, so

our solid dollar is nothing but a piece of paper. If you get to the grassroots like we do, you would hear the rumbling and bumbling of people who are getting madder all the time.

Figuring it all out from government payrolls, it is reported that about one of every six workers is on some payroll, leaving five of us to do the work of the country to pay his wage.

So when the day comes that we all get on the government payroll, there will be no taxes to collect, nobody left to pay our wages, so we won't have to pay taxes!

Barry Goldwater once said that history shows government to be the chief cause of thwarting man's liberty. Centralized power in the hands of a few is our undoing today; it is sliding us into the pure welfare state.

The tax gobblers are working like termites from the federal right down to the county. In every unincorporated community we hear wails about rising taxes. The record shows it, and our spending shows it.

We must get away from the tax-andspend licence, to the less-s.pend-lesstax idea or else, and that is no idle thought. -Cl

PLANE 'CRASH' WAS ROUTINE! Saturday afternoon several readers called the Sun to report that a light plane had crashed at the Willows, KOGO TV, the Forestry, and others rushed to the scene along with the Sun's editor only to find that a nifty little Piper Super Cub was sitting pretty on a newly made private landing strip on the Doug Walker Ranch, By dusk all had left but Walker and his tenant Chas, E, Judd, who had only the day before scraped the sloping strip, made his first landing at 5:15 Saturday. When residents saw tlie plane circling, then disappear over the hill, they thought it had crashed. In photo, at left is Judd, with Walker, Judd is with Otay Aviation at Brown Field, flies to work in about 14 minutes, wheras it takes an hour to drive, He is a tow-pilot for the firm which makes gliders, trains pilots to fly them. This air shot of the Peutz Valley entrance to Interstate 8, made by Editor Irvine while flying around Alpine, well illustrates how the new freeway is progressing.

The high bridge is rising fast, and the tunnel under Hwy 80- -shown last week- - has broken through on the south side. Now the contractor is moving some 54 million yards of .earth from the mountain at the left, to cover a huge culvert running from the clump of trees toward Hwy 80.

Harbison Canyon Rd. , is seen across the top, with Peutz Valley Rd. , below Hwy 80, but it will be under the freeway when finished. The one comming off the Canyon Road, is to be straight:ened and come in to connect directly with the Peutz road.

Oo11•t• 1 AIX By Cecile and Celeste Irvine We had quite a bit of excitement this past weekend. Friday night we were going to the show and as we came out on 80 at Tavern had to wait as police were just clearing up the accident that killed one boy. Then Saturday morning Cynthia and Bill took a drive up to Julian to have breakfast and get some good mountain water. When Bill was loading the last bottle, it accidently hit one already in and the bottle B i 1 1 was holding literlly exploded in his hands. It cut a deep gash in his 1 e f t wrist that severed some tendons and nerves. Cynthia had to drive him home from Julian. Dr. B_urak couldn't take care of it in his office so Cynthia and his mother drove him to EC Valley hospital where he had to have surgery and spend the night. He has to have bis arm in a cast for 3 weeks to allow the tendons to grow back together. He was lucky that the flying glass didn't do more damage. It is a good thing to know that a large bottle filled with water is that dangerous. Pete Scully is home from EC Valley hospital where he had major surgery plus the removal of his appendix, he has to be quiet for another week before he can go back to school. Cathy, Marsha and Davie Wooldridge are moving with their family up . to Davis, Calif. where their father got a

job with the University there. They hate to leave Alpine as they all have lots of friends here. Philip Hageman got into some poison Oak last week and had it so bad his mother had to take him to the doctor. His face was swelled up to twice its size and he missed 4 days of school because of it. Mike and Timmy Webb turned their 5 king snakes loose for the winter as they need to hibernate during cold weather and can't when they are in captivity. The Hoffman kids moved from the old John Romaine place to Ramona last week and Rene Thompson got one of their pups that they named Mugwumps. Dickie Sulivan gave Jerry Webb one of her blond cocker spaniels and Jerry named her Twiggie. She is only 4½ months old and Jerry says "cute as they make em" . Mama i s giving a bridal shower for Maxine Kinikin Cabella tonight and we are planning on being there. Maxine didn't have the time "before her wedding so we are all looking foward to a good time. Marion Bell's brother Dave is getting married tomorrow to Debbie Beddingfield and Marion is in charge of the guest book. · Donnie Archer thought he would have the bandage off his little finer t h i s week but the doctor thought 1t best to keep it on for a few more days. He cut part of his little finger off last week at the American Pipe Co. where he works part time. They couldn't find the tip or might have sewed it back on. Mama sure surprised us Saturday night when she had a birthday party for us. Mrs. George Grube of Alpine Bakery made a beautiful cake. Richard Irey & his wife came, we were sorry that Bill couldn't make it as he was in the hospital, but Cynthia came and we all had a nice time.

CAR E OF TH E BODY By Frances McTaggart

WALKING • • • IS ):>IATURAL EXERCISE ' Is it possible for you to walk around barefoot on the grass somewhere? Do as much of this as you ca n. Dr. Morton Walker in his book, Your Guide to Foot Health says, "Effective and efficient as they are, our feet are at their best walk-. ing on natural earthy terrain, grass, or turf surfaces that are soft and pliant and that yield to the tread. " For those of us who don't have lawns in this area contact with the good earth should have great value. Sand is also ideal for foot skin stimulation because of its abrasive action. If you are interested in putting more walking in your daily life, you might consider various ways of doing this such as; parking your car a fair distance from your work and walking the rest of the way • • . if you're shopping for just a few items the car can be parked several blocks away. If you ride a bus, why not cut the ride a little shorter and walk a little longer. When we were in school six miles a day- -walking to and from--were absolute minium. Then evenings we walked some more and on week-ends we went on long hikes. Nowadays, school buses cut down on many chanches for walking. Urge the children to walk more whenever possible. They'll get acquainted with nature and discover all the sights that are missed when riding in a car. Walking perks you up mentally. The adrenal glands secrete cortisone after a few minutes of exercise and cortisone feeds the brain, so it sounds feasible that walking is good for better mental stimulation.
