This office has consul ted Dr. John Horan, State Epidemiolo~ist, Division of Public Health Services, who recoomends, based on -the results provided by the Environmental Protection Agency , that your shallow well not be used for a drinking water supply. It ts our understanding you no longer use the shal l ow well, and you have no plans to resume use i n the near future . Mr. Howard A. Evans Exeter Road Epping, New Hampshire 03042

Dear Mr. Evans:

We have received copies from the United States Environmental Protection Agency of the results from the analysis of samples from your drinking water supply well. Further analytical results for your shallow water supply will be forwarded to you as soon as they are availabl e from the Environmental Protection Agency.

0 For your deep well trichlorofluoromethane wu found at levels below 10 micrograms per l iter, which is very low. While the Environmental Protection Agency has a standard of 8 milligrams per liter for a sevenday exposure, no standard has been for-.arded for a 11fetir.~e exposure . Methylene chloride was found in this same sample at a level of 130 mi crograms per liter. This is lower than the EnvironMental Protection Agency draft lifetime exposure limit of 150 micrograms per l iter.

We have conferred with Or . John Horan, State Epidemiologist with the Division of Public Health Services . He indicates, and we concur, your water may not be suitable for dri nking at this time. We note that changing environmental conditions, such as the quantity of pollutant, amount of rainfall, and pollutant travel, may have varying affects on your well water quality. Additionally , the Environmental Protection Agency has not established a safe lifetime exposure limit for tr1chlorofl uoromethane .

Please contact us or Or. Horan at 271-4477 if you have any questions regarding this matter.

Ve(l truly yours, .v-....fr. dt/L._ Dan H. Allen, P. E., Director Ground Water Pennit Division
