Fold Guide

1. Shelf Ready .

J Crew Group has two primary fold methods that are designed to ensure our product is sent to our stores “Shelf Ready”, i.e. no further folding is required upon arrival at the product stores. These fold methods are standardized by the use of Fold Boards with the following dimensions:

a) 11 ¾” x 8 ½ ” : This board is to be used for: b) c) Women’s : Woven Tops, Bottoms and Dresses.

Men’s : Knit Shirts , Woven Washed, SS, Oxford, and Heathered Shirts, Woven Jeans , Chinos , shorts

b) 10” x 6 ½” : This board is to be used for : Crewcuts: Knit tops. Womens : Knit tops.

2. Optimal Carton Usage . J Crew has additional standardized fold methods for product that cannot be folded using our primary method with fold board. There are multiple options that are designed to optimize the use of carton space , and therefore minimize transportation damages and costs. These are :

3. Non Standard . There will be occasions when J Crew products , by their nature may not be folded as per either the Shelf Ready or Optimal Carton Use method . These products may include heavy guage sweaters and other woven and knit products, that due to their construction and design require a different type of fold. Fold method in these cases will be confirmed by production associates .

4. Flat Pack (with or without GOH) : J Crew requires certain products , primarily outerwear , leather goods, etc , to be shipped unfolded to avoid damages. In these cases the vendor will confirm with production associates regarding the use of outsize cartons etc .

5. GOHH. Men’s suits may be required to ship Garment on Hanger Hanging carton. J Crew production associates will confirm when this method is required .

Carton Optimization It is critical that cartons are completely filled and the space is maximized inside. It is also critical that the garments packed inside the JC01 carton fit snugly in the carton and touch edge-to-edge with no overlap. If these guidelines are not met, the carton packing is not approved and chargebacks may apply. For more information, please see Non-Compliance Chargeback section below. In order to best fit the JC01 carton, note the below suggested fold dimensions that are ideal to fit inside the JC01 carton.

Fold Length Fold Width Notes

Option 2 Shelf Ready 10” 6 ½ 2 x 2 pack configuration

Option 3 11 12 1/2 1 x 2 pack configuration

Option 4 7 3/8 12 1/2 1 x 3 pack configuration

Option 5 11 6 ¼ 2 x 2 pack configuration

Option 6 7 3/8 6 ¼ 2 x 3 pack configuration

Option 7 7 3/8 4. 1/8 3 x 3 pack configuration

1. Bulk Carton Standards : o one solid/size color per carton. o One Mixed carton is allowed for bulk orders, unless otherwise

stated in the PO . o Garments must completely fill the carton, with no more than

0.5” of unused/empty space present inside the carton (length, width, and height) .

Page 16: J Guide.pdf · Sample of barcode sticker on a shoe box Shoe Box Banding All shoes boxes for direct po’s shipped to Lynchburg require a banding placed around the middle of the shoe

16

2. Pre-pack Carton Standards :

o ONE pre-pack per carton. o NO mixed carton allowed o Garments must completely fill the carton, with no more than

1.0” of unused/empty space present inside the carton (length, width, and height)

3. Excluding Option 1 “Shelf Ready “, Garments may not overlap inside the carton.

4. Garments must be folded consistently and stacked uniformly 5. Maximum weight of carton may not exceed 50lbs. 6. Footwear carton size minimum is 12”L x 12”W x 4 ½”H and

maximum is 39” l x 26” w x 16 1/2”h. 7. Apparel standard carton size is JC01, the outside dimensions are 22

5/8” L x 13” W x 15 ½ ½”H. 8. Footwear carton size minimum is 12”L x 12”W x 4 ½”H and

maximum is 39” l x 26” w x 16 1/2”h. 9. Lead/First carton of all shipments must contain the physical/hard copy

of the packing list. *In order to completely fill cartons, vendors may use smaller size cartons for end of run. Such cartons may only contain one color/size.

17

Full Carton Packing

It is critical for efficiency, cost savings, and quality that all cartons are packed completely full. Under-packed cartons with unused space inside will crush from the weight of heavier cartons on top of them.

Best carton fit is most important when packing garments. If there is too much space inside the length and width of a carton, garments can slide inside the carton, resulting in unused space.

Page 18: J Guide.pdf · Sample of barcode sticker on a shoe box Shoe Box Banding All shoes boxes for direct po’s shipped to Lynchburg require a banding placed around the middle of the shoe

18

Some garments have materials and folding styles that can trap air inside the carton. For this reason, it is recommended to fill the carton to the top, and then add additional 3 or 4 layers of garments so the stacked product is slightly higher than the height of the carton.

!! Too much room in

carton width allows garments to shift

inside

!! New pack method

and additional units per carton ensure full

carton packing compliance

Page 19: J Guide.pdf · Sample of barcode sticker on a shoe box Shoe Box Banding All shoes boxes for direct po’s shipped to Lynchburg require a banding placed around the middle of the shoe

19

Be careful not to OVER-PACK the carton during this step. If you notice any of the below signs during packing, reduce the number of units per carton.

Packing and carton fill requirements are mandatory. Please note in order to maintain/maximize fill carton fill standards, J.Crew understands that due to the full packing of cartons, there will be wrinkling of garments in transit. J Crew will charge back for not following full carton requirements. Please see additional notes below regarding best practices for carton ordering and fulfillment. If you have any questions regarding full carton packing and fitting, please reach out to your local BillerudKorsnäs representative.

!! Stack 3-4 extra layers above carton

height. Press down gently to ensure all

excess air is removed from garments.

!! CAUTION!

Watch for these signs of an over-

packed carton:

Expanded sides

Visible carton warping

Uneven

top/bottom surface

Carton Ordering Process

21

Fit Testing

Step 1: Horizontal orientation fitting

Using the JC01 carton size, first test fit using a horizontal orientation for the garments. Examples of correct horizontal configuration are below:

Page 22: J Guide.pdf · Sample of barcode sticker on a shoe box Shoe Box Banding All shoes boxes for direct po’s shipped to Lynchburg require a banding placed around the middle of the shoe

22

EXAMPLE 1 1 X 2 pack configuration

Lay folded garments side-by-side. Ensure no overlap is present, and garments fill the carton with no more than 0.5” unused/empty space. EXAMPLE 2 2 X 3 pack configuration

Smaller garment folded sizes fit more units side-by-side. Orientation of folded garments may alternate for best fit. Ensure no overlap is present, and garments fill the carton completely with no more than 0.5” unused/empty space. EXAMPLE 3

Page 23: J Guide.pdf · Sample of barcode sticker on a shoe box Shoe Box Banding All shoes boxes for direct po’s shipped to Lynchburg require a banding placed around the middle of the shoe

23

2 X 2 pack configuration

Garment orientation may be changed to ensure best fit. Ensure no overlap is present, garments are folded uniformly and stacked neatly, and garments fill the carton completely with no more than 0.5” unused/empty space. Be sure to fill the carton all the way to the top, then press down firmly to remove all air from the garments, and add more garments to fill the unused carton space. Place more garments and compress the product until no unused space remains. If the horizontal pack configuration meets the guidelines, carton fit is approved. Please order the full quantity of JC01 cartons needed to pack the garment PO. If the configuration does not meet the guidelines, proceed to step 2.

Page 24: J Guide.pdf · Sample of barcode sticker on a shoe box Shoe Box Banding All shoes boxes for direct po’s shipped to Lynchburg require a banding placed around the middle of the shoe

24

Step 2: Vertical orientation fitting

If the horizontal pack configurations do not work with the garments, they may be instead packed in a vertical orientation. The best method to load a carton in a vertical pack orientation is to turn the JC01 carton on the short end. Example of correct vertical configuration is below: EXAMPLE 1 Vertical pack configuration

Example reference photo, vertical pack configuration Turn JC01 carton on the short end and stack garments neatly inside the carton, ensuring there is no more than 0.5” unused/empty space. Be sure to compress the garments to remove all air, and add more garments to ensure the carton is completely filled.

Page 25: J Guide.pdf · Sample of barcode sticker on a shoe box Shoe Box Banding All shoes boxes for direct po’s shipped to Lynchburg require a banding placed around the middle of the shoe

25

If the vertical pack configuration meets the fitting guidelines, carton fit is approved. Please order the full quantity of JC01 cartons needed to pack the garment PO. If the configuration does not meet the guidelines, proceed to step 3. Step 3: Hybrid orientation fitting

If the horizontal and the vertical pack configurations do not work with the garments, they may be instead packed in a hybrid orientation. The hybrid orientation includes garments that are packed both horizontally and vertically. Example of correct hybrid configuration is below:

Page 26: J Guide.pdf · Sample of barcode sticker on a shoe box Shoe Box Banding All shoes boxes for direct po’s shipped to Lynchburg require a banding placed around the middle of the shoe

26

EXAMPLE 1 Hybrid pack configuration

Page 27: J Guide.pdf · Sample of barcode sticker on a shoe box Shoe Box Banding All shoes boxes for direct po’s shipped to Lynchburg require a banding placed around the middle of the shoe

27

Step 4: Custom carton

If the horizontal, vertical, or hybrid pack configurations do not work with the garments, they may be instead packed in a custom carton. Before you contact you BillerudKorsnäs representative to place an order for a custom carton, please complete steps 1 through 3 to ensure the JC01 carton cannot be used instead.

Page 28: J Guide.pdf · Sample of barcode sticker on a shoe box Shoe Box Banding All shoes boxes for direct po’s shipped to Lynchburg require a banding placed around the middle of the shoe

28

Custom Carton Process

1. Based on either a horizontal, vertical, or hybrid packing method,

measure the garments to determine a needed size for the custom carton.

2. If the requested size of custom carton exists within tolerance (0.5” or 13mm), use the existing carton size.

3. If the requested size of custom carton does NOT exist within tolerance, BillerudKorsnäs will provide an unprinted sample for fit testing.

4. If the carton fit test passed, order the full quantity of custom cartons needed.

5. If the carton fit test does NOT pass, return to step 1.

End of Run Cartons

If a carton can’t be filled with product completely, then you should use the end of run carton instead, JC02. Please use this size for the last carton of a PO, if unused space remains. Carton Filling Inserts It is mandatory to maintain carton sizes that meet the minimum carton size (see above, Carton Use and Filling section) of 12”L x 12”W x 4 ½”H (apparel and footwear). In the case that product cannot fill the minimum carton size, use a carton filling insert to ensure the remainder space in the carton is filled. Examples of filling inserts below:
