VR Alentejo

Essence: Top-value wines from Portugal’s heartland from the pioneering winemaker who brought the region to the international stage.

J. Portugal Ramos Vinhos was founded by João Portugal Ramos, his country’s most famous winemaker, in 1990 in the heart of the Alentejo. Ramos, considered Portugal’s Pierro Antinori or Emile Peynaud (The New York Times). Ramos near single-handedly opened Portuguese winemaking to the benefits of modern technologies with an emphasis on low yields, occasional oak aging, and the preservation of a grape’s natural fruit flavors.

1. Loios: Target all wine shops, boutique to large chains (stack). Target on-premise BTG at Mediterranean and tapas restaurants and wine bars. Emphasize superior quality & low price.

2. Lima: Target all wine shops, boutique to large chain (stack): A sturdy enough Vinho Verde for cold weather. Target BTG all on-premise: Vinho Verde is a growing category, and as Lima is not effervescent, it is the best BTG option.

3. Vila Santa & Quinta da Vicosa: Target boutique wine shops and Mediterranean and tapas restaurants

1. Ramos, has won dozens of national and international awards, e.g., 2010 Personality of the Year and 2006 Producer of the Year from Essencia do Vinho

2. Vineyard are located by the ancient marble city of Estremoz. The schist, quartz, marble and limestone clay soil combined with the region’s Continental climate create ideal grape-growing conditions.

3. Ramos draws from his decades of experience to carefully create a range of wines, always insisting on the highest quality, balance, and expression of terroir

4. His latest venture takes him to the Vinho Verde region, with the launch of the crisp and fruity Lima by Joao Portugal Ramos.
