ln December 1982, the last built transcontinentalrailroad ceased to exist when the Western PacificRailroad was approved for merger into the massiveUnion Pacific Railroad system, itself part of the originaltranscontinental railroad.
Always a frugal and innovative operation, the WPpioneered important industry advances still in usetoday, including diesel power, turbocharging, central-ized traffic control, roller bearing-equipped freightcars, computerization and the use of concrete ties, justto name a few.
ln 1983, the Feather River Rail Society was formed withthe goal of preserving the legacy of the WesternPacific. The Union Pacific graciously donated severalpieces of equipment and granted use of the former WPlocomotive facilitv in the Citv of Portola. ThiS 3Z3gfe_site includes a 16,000 square foot diesel shop in activeuse from 1 954 until 1974 as well as 2-'l /2 miles of track.
This facility became home to what is now known as theWestern Pacific Railroad Museum. By the late 1990s,
the FRRS had assembled what is considered by manyto be one of the premier collections of equipment andarchival materialfocusing on a single railroad family.
Today, this collection includes over 36 locomotives and120 pieces of rolling stock, as well as an extensivegathering of corporate records, paperwork, artifactsand historic photos and films. Visitors to the WesternPacific Railroad Museum soon discover that this is a
hands-on facility where they are encouraged to climbinto the cabs of locomotives, sit in the engineer's seats, and browse through the many cabooses and passen-ger cars on display. The working diesel shop featuresan exhibit room and a variety of other railroad-relateddisplays are located throughout the building.
Many unique and important items of railroad historyare preserved in the Museum's collection including thefirst diesel locomotive purchased by the railroad, thelast operating locomotive built to pull the California
Zephyr passenger train, one of only five remaining WP
steam engines, a 200-ton rail mounted crane, a passen-ger car once used for blood donation service duringwartime and a majority of the WP's B0 years of surviv-ing corporate records.
The FRRS is a not-for-profit, 501(cX3) volunteer organi-zation that does not receive any government funding.Although the FRRS enjoys a good working relationshipwith the Union Pacific Railroad, it is also not affiliatedwith the UP. The continued existence of this museumand archives depends upon revenue gathered frommemberships, donations, fundraising, admissions andstore sales. Please help support our mission topreserve and protect the legacy of the Western Pacificand its people.
Portola offers many accommodations and services fortravelers and is the only incorporated city in PlumasCounty. Located at an elevation of 5,000 feet in theSierra Nevada Mountains, Portola is 150 miles north-east of Sacramento and 50 miles northwest of Reno.
For additional information on Portola and surroundingcommuniiies, please contact Eastern Plumas Chamberof Commerce at 800.995.6057 or visit their website atwww.eastern pl u mascha m ber.com.
Please join us ond help preserve the WP!
