SFAC is thrilled to have Stanislav, “Stas”, Venglevski performing forour July program. Stas’ artistry, dazzling technical command, andsensitivity have earned this native of the Republic of Moldova, part of theformer Soviet Union, increasing acclaim as a virtuoso of the BayanAccordion. A two-time first prize winner of Bayan competition inMoldova, Stas is a graduate of the Moscow Russian Academy of Music,where he received his Masters Degree in Music under the tutelage of thefamed Russian Bayanist, Friedrich Lips. In 1992 he immigrated to theUnited States.
Stas is an accordionist, a musician, an arranger, an entertainer and ateacher. His repertoire includes a broad range of classical, contemporaryand ethnic music as well as original compositions. He has touredextensively as a soloist throughout the former Soviet Union, Canada,Europe, and the United States, including numerous performances withDoc Severinsen, Steve Allen and Garrison Keillor on the Prairie HomeCompanion Show. Additionally, he has performed with symphonyorchestras throughout the United States. He performed the worldpremiere of Concerto No. 2 by Anthony Galla-Rini and also the worldpremiere of Bayan and Beyond, composed for Stas by Dan Lawitts. Heregularly participates in the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra's Arts inCommunity Education Program; has performed with the ChicagoSymphony Orchestra and the Tacoma Symphony Orchestra; madetelevision commercials and performed in theater productions; andproduced numerous recordings including Tchaikovsky's NutcrackerSuite for Bayan as well as one of original compositions. He has publishedseveral books of original compositions.
Stas founded Accordion XXI Century Series in 2010 so that Midwestaudiences can experience the amazing range of the Accordion and Bayanby bringing gifted artists from all over the world. In a concert setting,these gifted musicians share their skills and cultures to provide theaudience with a unique musical experience. The performances featurethe Accordion or Bayan in solo presentation and, when possible, inconcert with other instruments.

Jana’s Italian heritageled her to beginaccordion lessons atage 6. Sixteen yearslater she graduatedfrom CSU-Stanislauswith a degree inAccordion Perfor-mance, and a year latershe earned herteaching credential.For the past 32 years,Jana has been anelementary musicteacher in Modesto. In 1999, she and two friendsformed the very successful “Good Time AccordionClub.” Currently, they have over 200 members.She has served as club president for the past 14years. Jana has gained international recognitionparticipating and teaching at accordion campsthroughout the U.S. She has several originalcompositions and arrangements, one of which isincluded on Stas Venglevski’s latest album.
Lynn Ewing will be performing with Stas for partof the program. They will play duets of some of his
original compositions.Lynn was born andraised in San Diego,California, where shestarted playingaccordion at ageseven. Later, Lynndirected five accordionbands and taught morethan a hundred youngchildren to playaccordion with theRobert MitchellAccordion Studio.Lynn received certifi-cation in the OrffMethod of Music
Instruction and taught as the Music Specialist at ElGranada Elementary School. Currently Lynn teachesprivate accordion students and plays and entertainswith two accordion ensembles, the AccordionChamber Ensemble (ACE) and AbsolutAccord.She is also the current president of SFAC.
Rose City Accordion Clubfills Silver Falls with music

Stas Venglevski recently conducted an orchestracomprised of accordion lovers from throughoutOregon and beyond during the Rose City AccordionClub’s June 8 to 13 event at Silver Falls State Parkin Oregon.
For Stas, the accordion has been a part of life sinceage 5. "The sound! You can't even describe whathappens to kids in my country (Moldova)," he said."You love it. It's like a little seed that popped in mybody and I heard sound. In my opinion, accordionabove all other instruments. It's like breath."
The other conductor at the camp was Murl Sanders,who traveled to Silverton from Seattle. Heexplained, “Accordion gatherings are kind of specialevents, and since everyone here is totally committedto being here it makes it that much more exciting.It's just an accordion love-fest!"
The week culminated in an evening concert in whichthe campers played a variety of songs conducted bySanders and Venglevski, from traditional Ukrainiananthems to modern Beatles and Coldplayarrangements and original compositions written bythe conductors themselves.
Then the conductors took the stage for a professionalrecital, but without any stuffiness. Dusk fell andmosquitoes flitted against the window screens ascampers and other accordion lovers gathered around,filling the Silver Falls conference hall for a joyousjam session.

The San Francisco Accordion Club came up withanother winner for our June 22nd meeting, featuringexcellent performances from a variety ofaccordionists, ranging from a single scholarshipperformer, to a dynamic duo, to two stellarensembles. Unfortunately, those of you who couldn’tattend missed one of the quality performances thatthe club has been consistently producing for the pastseveral months.
Before the meeting began, Scott Anderson drove allthe way down from Napa to play many popular tunesbefore the meeting. Thanks, Scott, for doing this.Additionally, Kate Froeberg played four selectionsbefore the program began in preparation forcompeting at the ATG festival in July. She almoststole the show before the official program began!
Past president Peter Di Bono, emcee for the day,introduced Don Nurisso and his dance band group,consisting of Mark Hinchman on drums, SteveAuerbach on string bass, and Vince Aguiar on reedsand flute. Don is well known in the bay areaaccordion community, having over 30 years ofexperience performing as a professional.
The Nurisso Quartet commenced with a gentlerendition of “Time After Time,” beginning with atenor sax solo and accordion accompaniment. Vincesoloed on the flute, which was all very light andmelodic. The next number was “Brazil,” a popularsamba starting with a deep, reedy accordionaccompanied by Vince’s energetic maracas.
Everybody loves the samba, especially during WorldCup! “You Stepped Out of a Dream,” was played as abossa nova rather than as a customary fox trot. Vincesang the complex melody beautifully and followed itwith a tasty flute solo. They played “All the ThingsYou Are” by Jerome Kern. The intriguing chordprogressions somewhat reminiscent of the Baroqueera are well suited for improvisation. The groupfeatured the sax and a great accordion solo with Donplaying his trusty Giulietti. “Inamorata,” an Italianwaltz, followed this with an emotional accordionsolo. “Teach Me Tonight” was interestingly renderedas a cha-cha. Vince sang as he cha-cha’d thosemaracas, and then played a flute solo. The accordionending was very “hip.”
Next up was Audrey Spinazola, one of Peter’sstudents, who wasthe recentrecipient of ascholarshipaward, which sheused for accordionrepairs. She is anaccomplishedpianist and is nowlearning how totransfer her talents to the accordion. She attendedclown school as well as theater and pantomimeschool, so I’m not clowning around when I say thatshe’s a professional clown. She opened up with acrisp number entitled “Rosalie Polka,” and thenplayed a French piece demonstrating sensitivedynamics that must have made her teacher verypleased. Her last number was an adorablecombination of her accordion, clowning, singing, andphysical comedy. “Dream a Little Dream of Me”included singing and being a ventriloquist for apuppet named Snowball. She placed the delightfullittle faux kitten on top of her accordion. At onepoint, Audrey had Snowball play a solo on thekeyboard. This was an ingenuous, imaginative, andenjoyable performance.
Next on stage was Sweet Moments of Confusion,consisting of Diana Strong on the accordion fromOakland, and Myra Joy on cello from Ft. Bragg.Their specialty is performing original compositionsinspired by folk traditions from many corners of theworld, particularly northern and eastern Europe.

Sweet Moments of Confusion began their programwith a Celtic-based folk songin 7/8 meter. Itwas a veryspirited piecewithconsiderabledynamiccontrast andaccents. Diane
exhibited excellent bellows skill with quick andresponsive dynamic changes. The cello was verysmooth and fluid in the first section, and then themore lively section involved staccato bowing. Thenext tune, “She Sells Sea Shells by the Seashore,”was written by Myra, which demonstrated hertechnical prowess on the cello. “Midnight Bicycle”featured a 7-beat and 9-beat alternating meter. Myraplayed the first staccato section as a pizzicato bass,and then bowed in the second slower section.During the ending portion, Diana switched to acello-sounding reed, and the resulting timbre blendwas fantastic.
“Sail Back Home” was engaging, with theaccordion’s simple melody accompanied by theplucking rhythm of the cello. The rise and fall of themelody and great dynamics made you feel as if youwere sailing. As the song faded into its ending, theship disappeared in the distance. The last selectionwas also an odd meter, consisting of 6-beat and 5-beat patterns alternating with some transition bars,which certainly made one take notice!
Our featured performer that most would regard as amusician’s musician,Rob Reich, took thestage, along with histwo equally qualifiedsidemen, to form thejazz trio and begintheir scintillating setof music for us. Robwas more than ablyaccompanied byJohn Wiitala onstring bass, who has
performed with innumerable jazz greats including
Art Van Damme, and Eric Garland on drums, whohas performed with similarly esteemed jazz icons.
The trio’s genre could probably be best described assophisticated, straight-ahead jazz. Rob has a uniqueimprovisatory style that emphasizes wider intervaljumps than perhaps many have been accustomed tohearing, particularly on the accordion, rather thanthe more typical arpeggiated chords that comprisethe bulk of most players’ improvisatory resources.
They began the set with “All of Me,” a straight-upversion played clearly on his amplified Sonola. Thebassist played a nicely active solo on his uprightbass. The drummer then traded solos with the othersfor two choruses. Next was a tune called a“contrafact,” and Rob explained that he likes tocompose new tunes based on the harmonic structureof other composers’ standards. Famous composers,such as Bach, have done this for years. His tune,“See Ya,” was based on the chord progressions for“I’ll See You in My Dreams.” The next piece,“Traceries,” was an unusual minor chordprogression waltz. The bass solo sounded veryinteresting with the unusual harmonic changes.
John told a story about the Art Van DammeQuintet in Brazil. Apparently, Art was a culturaltreasure in that country, and the other musicians inthe group weren’t aware that he was virtually adeity in that country. All of the Brazilian pre bossanova populists were huge Van Damme fans, andthey all started out on the accordion. The trioconcluded with Duke Ellington’s C Jam Blues,with Eric performing a long, varied drum solo, andRob doing some airy interval jazz improvisation.
This stellar jazz trio was incredibly responsive andgiving to one another. All three musicianscomplemented each other’s playing, whichincorporated tasteful, sophisticated improvisation.

We are so thrilled that theATG Festival is on thehorizon, and being heldright here in SF near theairport at the Crowne Plazahotel. The Festival runsfrom Wednesday evening,July 23rd, to Saturdayevening, July 26th.
Registration goes on all day on Wednesday, as peoplefrom all over the country gather for this exciting event.In the evening at 8 pm, there will be a jam session led byGary Blair from Scotland, renowned entertainer andaccordionist. Once again - you can choose a packagewhich includes everything, or do an "a la carte" whereyou choose just the events that interest you.
For the next three days, all things accordion will abound!During the day, there will be numerous workshops onthings of interest to accordionists, such as improvising,creating interesting bass, bellows technique, specialtymusic such as Balkan, Brazilian Forro, Tango and Celtic.Also during the day, there will be competitions held inthe numerous categories available, and it is reallyworthwhile to have an opportunity to hear the peoplewho have put so much effort into entering. Thursdaylunch will have music by the Ron Borelli trio and Fridaywill feature music by Steve Albini and Cafe Vienna. Anoriginal Music Concert will be held at 3 PM on Friday.A three day pass to all workshops and competitions isonly $45.
Concerts will be held at 7:30 PM every evening, andthey are very affordable with a low price of only $15each if you are not attending the entire event. TheConcert on Thursday night will be an international event,featuring Gary Blair from Scotland, Xia Gang and alsothe Tinajin Angels from the Art And Culture TrainingSchool in China, and Jamie Machler from WashingtonState. Friday's concert features Stas Venglevski, as wellas Antonio Speccaratello from Italy, and two amazingensembles, the University of Kansas ChamberEnsemble, and our own AbsolutAccord, directed byRichard Yaus. Saturday's concert has the FestivalOrchestra, the winners of the Competitions, and theFrank Petrilli Quartet. The Gala Banquet Dinnermusic is provided by the Peter Di Bono Trio.

Performing Around the Bay
CHANGE IN MEETING SCHEDULEYour Board has decided to make a bold change inour club schedule. Every year, we have at least 5major conflicts with holidays and events on thethird Sunday, starting with Martin Luther KingDay in January, President's Day in February,Father's Day in June, Cotati in August, and often"too close for comfort" dates near Thanksgivingand Christmas. This year has been a particularlydifficult year in terms of Oyster Point Yacht Club(OPYC) conflicts, and we hope to alleviate that byworking with them closely, and making a changeto the SECOND SUNDAY of the month. Thischange will BEGIN with Sunday, January 10,2015.

*We welcome Robert Cooperstein, DC, to theBoard. Robert is a Professor at a local chiropracticcollege and practices in San Leandro CA. With a verydiverse taste for all kinds of music, he has developed aparticular fondness for the accordion. He has been amember of the SFAC for 3 years and has attendedmost of its meetings. He was nominated and electedto the SFAC Board in May 2014, and is in charge ofmaintaining the membership database and record-keeping related to that.
