Hello, Symphony
League Members.
This has been a banner year for WSL! As I look back on the ac c om pl i shm en t s of our organization, I am so proud of you—our Active and Associate members—for the time you have volunteered and the gifts you have given to culturally enrich our community through the Women’s Symphony League. We have much to celebrate! We successfully hosted the statewide Texas Association for Symphony Orchestras this spring.
We supported the East Texas Symphony Orchestra with a beautiful and successful WSL Ball. With grants from Julietta Jarvis and Lightner Sams Foundations, we supported the ETSO interactive school concert for 3,400 fourth and fifth graders. We supported music education through multiple scholarships for elementary through college students. We supported Tyler Youth Orchestra with financial gifts from WSL and from JSL fundraisers. And, we added a successful new fundraiser this spring—“A Fresh Approach to the Classics”—under the enthusiastic leadership of Tricia Wiggs and Jan Barton. Achieving all of this requires the work of many volunteers, great leaders and supportive members. I am so appreciative of our Executive Board, Full Board, Actives and Associates! This year has been a joy! I want to close by thanking:
…Richard Lee, ETSO Music Director and conductor, for his support of our membership and our events.
…Jamie Sadler, Michelle Carr, and Debbie Peveto for graciously opening their beautiful homes for our Full Board, General membership and Joint Board meetings.
…Bonnie Palmer for wearing many hats and successfully launching a “One and Done” Committee!
…Barbara Powers for creating a brand new website for WSL. …Laura Hyde, for serving as my treasured advisor and mentor
while holding the office of national President of the Volunteer Council for the League of American Orchestras. We are so proud of her leadership for leagues across the country! Because of friendships, fun, and good works for the community, our membership is growing. There are so many people to thank—more than the size our newsletter can support! Please know that I have genuinely loved my work
with the Women’s Symphony League this year. It has been a privilege and an honor to serve as your President.

FRESH Approach Success Hailed by Chairs
The Women’s Symphony League of Tyler held its spring fundraiser ‘A FRESH Approach to the Classics’ on the patio at FRESH by Brookshire’s on May 1, 2014 at 6:30 PM. ETSO conductor Richard Lee was the special guest. He thanked the symphony supporters gathered,
especially since the funds generated at the benefit are slated to help pay for the orchestra’s meals during rehearsals next year. Event co-chairs Tricia Wiggs and Jan Barton echoed those sentiments and introduced Dolce Vita, a quartet of young school-age musicians who entertained and wowed the crowd, playing classical selections, movie themes,
and rock songs. Wiggs and Barton laughingly dubbed the event May Day as it gave WSL members a last minute end of the season opportunity to fulfill meeting and fundraiser obligations necessary for active
membership status. With over 100 regi stered to attend, the event was a success and wil l be continued. WSL president Cindy Kidwell plans to submit the idea to t h e s t a t e symphony league group as an easy, fun way to help members meet their requirements, interact with new members, and just relax at the end of the symphony season.

The Executive Board of the Tyler Youth Orchestra Announces New Music Director and Conductor
The Tyler Youth Orchestra is celebrating the end of a wonderful year that featured: Four Concerts, Four incredible
Youth Concerto Soloists and Performances at the Symphony Ball, TASO Post-Symphony Reception, Bergfeld Park, Barnes & Noble, and much, much more! We also had the pleasure of recognizing Tom and Heather Mensch of Tyler Junior College as our Noted Circle Honorees. It has been a memorable year - and the best is yet to come! We are grateful to the conductors, parents, students and volunteers who have made it possible to prepare us to take TYO to the next level - especially the WSL and JSL, whose support has made it all possible! This coming year TYO
will be collaborating with ETSO and area Orchestra and Band teachers as never before to promote music education and performance. This expanded effort calls for a Youth Orchestra Director so dynamic the popularity of classical music will explode throughout the youth in East Texas. We have found that conductor in Dr. Gene H. Moon, an already well-known and respected Orchestra Teacher/Conductor with Tyler teachers and students from his popular Strings Camp at Stephen F. Austin State University where he serves as Director of Orchestras. He comes to TYO with a wealth of Youth Symphony experience as Dr. Moon served as the Music Director of the Oklahoma Youth Symphonies from 2002-2006. Dr. Moon is highly sought after as a guest clinician with recent engagements
including region orchestras throughout the state of Texas and surrounding states, the 2012 North Central Honor Orchestra in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the 2011 Louisiana All-State Orchestra, a 2010 engagement conducting the Gang Nam Symphony Orchestra in Seoul, South Korea and the 2008 TPSMEA (Texas Private Schools) All-State Orchestra. Since 2006, Dr. Moon has led orchestras and performed as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the country and overseas. He has performed with the Fort Smith Symphony (AR), Longview Symphony Orchestra (TX), Lawton Philharmonic (OK), Enid Symphony (OK) and the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra (LA). Born of Korean heritage, Dr. Moon began his piano studies at age six and string studies at age nine. He went on to earn his Bachelor in Music Education and Music Performance from the University of Central Oklahoma, Master of Music Education from New York University and his Doctorate of Musical Arts in Orchestral Conducting from the University of
Oklahoma. Dr. Moon is anxious to meet our WSL membership and is busy recruiting new TYO members from across East Texas. Please spread the word about our exciting new opportunities for young musicians and tell them to contact Dr. Moon at (936) 468-3885 or [email protected] for an audition!

School Concert Update The Orchestra Moves!
The ETSO school concert, “The Orchestra Moves,” on Monday, April 28th, was another huge success! Students and teachers filled Caldwell Auditorium to capacity for two p e r f o r m a n c e s o f approximately 1,700 each. Students were able to sing and play both recorders and violins along with segments of the program as well as enjoy familiar classical selections. WSL members served as volunteer coordinators and ushers to direct students to pre-assigned locations. This is the second year for c o n c e r t s w i t h accompanying curriculum developed by the Weill Music Institute of Carnegie Hall. The date, May 5th, has already been set for next year’s school concert when once again, “The Orchestra Sings,” will be presented. Plans are currently underway for family centered events celebrated on Saturday afternoons at Liberty Hall during the 2014-2015 Season. ETSOA Celebrates Spring Events at Liberty Hall
The East Texas Symphony Orchestra Association had a busy spring at Liberty Hall with two very special events. On April 4 and 5, the Association presented the first ETSO Piano Festival at Liberty Hall. The festival consisted of two programs featuring Italian pianist Francesco Attesti. Friday evening he presented a concert with local favorites soprano Holly Marsh and flutist Claudia Carroll. Saturday evening, Mr. Attesti presented a solo recital. Each evening drew around 100 patrons to the downtown theater. In addition to the performance, Saturday’s event also honored Michael Gollob, in whose memory the festival was sponsored. Also recognized were honorary chairs for the
festival, Betty and Stan Stokes. A large crowd, including some 60 delegates of the TASO Conference, came to Liberty Hall on April 25 for “Legends of Broadway.” Broadway star Ron Raines and award-winning music director/conductor Don Pippin wowed the audience with and evening of musical theater favorites and stories from their careers. Looking ahead to the new season, ETSOA@Liberty Hall presents a special Independence Day musical celebration on July 3 at 7:30 pm. The Tyler Big Band will be featured in a Patriotic Fanfare.
