Mission-driven MIT start-up seeds both resilient watersystems and economies in rural Mexico

There is a village in the Yucatan peninsulacalled La Mancalona This community of 450residents is in a tropical jungle region of ruralMexico where beekeeping and subsistencefarming are the main means of employmentIt is remote and until 2013 communitymembers lacked access to clean drinkingwater instead they relied on expensivebottled water or bottled soda a cheaperalternative 2013 was the year that the village joined upwith an MIT research team to pilot a newtechnology Leading the MIT team wasSteven Dubowsky professor emeritus ofmechanical engineering at MIT Amy Biltonthen a postdoc in MITs Department of

Aeronautics and Astronautics and MIT mechanical engineering research associate Huda Elasaad Thetechnology Photovoltaic powered reverse osmosis modular scalable rooftop solarshypowered waterfiltration The collaboration between Dubowsky and Elasaad began at the MIT Center for Clean Water and CleanEnergy a partnership between MIT and King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) inSaudi Arabia They shared a passion for meeting the need for affordable clean water with effectivetechnology and a desire to elevate communities economically and socially with their work This visionhas since grown from a successful field trial in La Mancalona to the launch of a Somervilleshybased startupwith an economic justice mission PV Pure PV Purersquos water purification system providesvillages that do not have access to affordableclean water the methods to gather purifyand sell water through the power ofrenewable energy Solar panels chargebatteries that pump water from existingsources (both brackish well water andcollected rain water) power internal UVsterilization bulbs and push water through aset of semiporous water filtrationmembranes Their systems range inproduction from 250 to 25000 liters ofpurified water per day When the averageperson in Mexico consumes approximately 2shy5 liters of drinking water per day per person this contribution is significant The system is operated via smart controls that tune its functionality for changes in climate weather andwater chemistry It is also maintenance optimized These elements ensure resiliency for the technologyconsistency for its clean water outputs affordability and ease of use Individuals of any skill level andtechnical background can be trained in the systemrsquos use and maintenance an essential quality for atechnology designed for remote areas Before participating in the technology pilot La Mancalona was like many other rural communities aroundthe globe without access to clean water Residents lacked access to accessible and affordable waterfiltration technologies They relied on expensive bottled water often spending up to 25 of their income So when Dubowsky Elasaad and their team began work there they knew they had a lot to learn Their organizational partner Fondo Para La Paz provided essential support as they facilitated a user

adoption process with high standards forcultural sensitivity ldquoWe tried very hard tointegrate the community into every stage ofimplementation in the Yucatan It was soimportant for us to make sure that thecommunity there embraced and valued thetechnology because we knew that its futurewas actually in their handsrdquo said Elasaad This entailed extensive training in operationand maintenance as well as broadereducation in clean water use As Elasaadputs it ldquosafe water doesnrsquot stop at thesystemrdquo

In addition to enabling small communities to be water independent PV Purersquos technology creates asecondary economy Trained residents run and maintain their systems selling water to others at a pricethat everyone can afford In La Mancalona local device operators sold their outputs at 5 pesos per 20shyliter bottle just oneshyfifth of what the equivalent bottle of water would cost After covering labor andmaintenance they still earned a profit ndash $3600year that was reshyinvested in their community The twoshyyear pilot at La Mancalona proved the effectiveness of the solar powered reverse osmosistechnology as well as the communityshycentered economic philosophy behind it The technology proved tobe so valuable that at the end of the pilot Dubowsky and Elasaad received a list of over 80 villages in thesurrounding area of the Yucatan that were in need of it It was then that the team realized that theycouldnrsquot meet the need for their work through the nonshyprofit model that they had been following Theylooked to business for a road map to bring their technology into the hands of those who need it and stillachieve the social good that underscores their efforts In 2015 they incorporated as PV Pure andmoved their fledgling startup to GreentownLabs an incubator for clean tech inSomerville Massachusetts Since then thePV Pure founders have focused on buildingtheir team while conducting additional fieldtrials developing onshytheshygroundpartnerships and formulating strategicmanufacturing and deployment strategies Atpresent they are focusing on Mexico theCaribbean and the southwestern UnitedStates due to abundant solar availability andneed for clean water In a few months theywill bring water to 18000 people in theSonoran desert through a collaboration with the Yaqui indigenous community and facilitated by thesponsorship of the energy company IEnova While they see a global potential for their product in someways the team already feels like theyrsquove made it As Elasaad puts it ldquowersquove all decided that whether wehelp one village or a million itrsquos all worth itrdquo And they may be poised to reach a million When a technology effectively meets an important need itsusers are often the most convincing marketers The water entrepreneurs of La Mancalona are nowselling water to tourists who come to their region to visit the Mayan ruins The transaction that occurs isso much more than just financial theyrsquore educating foreigners about new water utility possibilities thatcan emerge through the union of technology and community engagement PV Purersquos management team

adoption process with high standards forcultural sensitivity ldquoWe tried very hard tointegrate the community into every stage ofimplementation in the Yucatan It was soimportant for us to make sure that thecommunity there embraced and valued thetechnology because we knew that its futurewas actually in their handsrdquo said Elasaad This entailed extensive training in operationand maintenance as well as broadereducation in clean water use As Elasaadputs it ldquosafe water doesnrsquot stop at thesystemrdquo
