Cosmetically, the Abbey Road that Dr Diana Spencer walkedinto 12 months ago was a far cry from the one that exists today.The last refurbishment had been almost 20 years ago andDiana’s vision was to transform the single, quite large, surgeryinto two smaller surgeries - (one dental, one for thehygienist) plus a decontamination room. The whole project istestament to how a little creative thinking can provideworkable solutions, even in the tightest of spaces.

“ I knew from the moment I walked into the practice that it wasa perfect match for my needs. An existing dental practice, in anexcellent location, high ceilings with plenty of natural light toallow the best use of the limited space. I knew immediatelythat the physical attributes of the practice would let me realisemy vision.”

The purchase of the practice was agreed in January 2011 andfinally went through in June of the same year. With an openingschedule for the middle of October, Diana knew that time wasof the essence and there was a need to work in partnershipwith a highly efficient company and ideally one that couldprovide everything she needed to complete the project.

She decided to visit Henry Schein Minerva’s London Showroomat Marble Arch as this provided the most convenient locationfor her to begin her search. She phoned Henry Schein Minervaand made an appointment to see Dan Payne - EquipmentSpecialist. By the time this meeting had ended, Diana felt shehad not only found the perfect practice but also the perfectteam to help her create the practice she wanted.

“After my meeting with Dan I felt immediately that he understoodexactly what I was trying to achieve; a private, family oriented,general dental practice - one which can operate as a centralpart of the local community. He was understanding andempathised with my ethos and then demonstrated hisunderstanding through his actions.”

Diana introduced Dan to her builder and interior designer, bothindependent tradespeople chosen by Diana, but it was Danwho stepped up to the mark to effectively Project Manage thewhole refurbishment.

“ Dan took the lead and was a fantastic project manager for me.He was reliable, communicated regularly with myself and theon-site builder and ensured that every detail was taken care of.”

The Abbey Road Dental project provided a great challengefor Dan and the team at Henry Schein Minerva as it requiredinnovative and creative design to ensure that not a singlecentimetre of space was wasted. This was often a much moredifficult task than when faced with a design that has the luxuryof surplus space. But a challenge is what makes Dan’s jobinteresting and thanks to his engineering background he wasable to help with the surgery layout himself. Having visited thepractice and talked at length with Diana, Dan devised the 2-surgery layout, waiting room and a small, but fully compliantdecontamination room. He ensured that cabinetry and equipmenthad just enough clearance to avoid any clashes and used the ceiling height to great effect to create additional space for storage. Glass topped partition walls made optimum useof the existing natural light, and helped the small surgeries feel light and airy.

Diana chose to equip the surgeries with identical Sirona C8+Treatment Centres which provide everything she needs ina neat compact unit, which again makes best use of theavailable space and gives the impression that the surgeriesremain spacious and uncramped. The surgery cabinetry wasalso bespoke designed, manufactured by Premier Cabinetsand fitted by Henry Schein Minerva. The use of light coloursthroughout the surgeries provides the illusion of space andoptimum use of drawers and pull-out units means surfacesremain uncluttered, despite the restriction in floor space.Although digital imaging is something that was not installed atthe time, provision was made for this to be added at a laterdate, again something that Dan took account of in terms ofshort medium and long term planning.

The additional pressure of a relatively short timescale and ascheduled re-opening that was non-negotiable meant thateverything needed to run like clock-work during the installation.Dan visited the practice 2 days prior to the install, just to makesure that everything was in order prior to installation and ateam of 6 Henry Schein Minerva Engineers worked for 2 daysto finally fit the surgeries and decontamination equipment.

“ The actual fitting of the surgeries completely met myexpectations. We agreed an installation date and I was told itwould take 2 days - and it did, - no excuses and no problemsthat were not immediately overcome. The whole project wasrun with professionalism and expertise. These people reallyknow what they are doing.”

Diana and her team were given brief training during the hand-over process but again Dan was on-hand to providesome additional telephone support to answer queries prior to opening. As part of the decontamination room design, Dan had helped Diana with various aspects of compliance forCQC and with HTM01-05 and ensured that at every stage ofdevelopment, guidelines were being adhered to. The ability tocall on the support of Henry Schein Minerva’s DecontaminationSpecialists is a real advantage in this area. With guidanceconstantly being updated the need to stay abreast of changesis very important particularly when advising practitioners. Dan’s advice was extremely helpful and an important contributingfactor when Diana received her visit from the CQC Inspectoron October 9th, just 8 days before the scheduled opening! Dr Diana Spencer has created a practice based on very firmphilosophies about establishing long-term relationships withpatients - she treats children, watches them grow and getsgreat satisfaction from remaining their dentist for many yearsinto adulthood. This is the same type of long term relationshipshe has very quickly established with Henry Schein Minerva.

“ It was the attention to detail that I found so impressive andmade the project run so smoothly. Dan was working on anumber of practice refurbishments at the same time as mine,all of them completely different from each other, but I neveronce felt that mine was “just another surgery”. Dan adaptedhis knowledge and experience to transform the specific visionI had articulated to him into reality. The flexibility to be able tocall on internal expertise across a range of different disciplinesin order to exactly meet the needs of an individual is a realasset for Henry Schein Minerva and was a real benefit for me.”
