Once again, welcome to Roofscape. In the last issue we covered the new Building

Regulations Part L, so, to date what impact has this new Regulation had? To be frank it

seems very little at present and in a lot of instances confusion reigns. The legislation in

place is quite specific and will provide a good basis for saving energy and reducing carbon

emissions. To date it seems that little notice is being taken of the Regulations and they

don’t appear to be being policed. The concept of rooflights having a U-value of 2.20 and the roof

0.25 is straightforward but still we have no indication of clients, specifiers or contractors actually

ordering the new rooflights designed to comply with these Regulations. So, what is

going on? For more information about rooflights and Part L, see page 5 of this

issue of Roofscape, or visit our website (www.filon.co.uk) where our comprehensive

brochure covering the Part L Regulations regarding rooflights is available.

ROOFLIGHTS

The 2012 Olympic Games inLondon will see the constructionof many new buildings andstadia.

Architects and designers, taskedwith meeting the challenge of thislarge-scale development oflandmarks for and beyond theOlympics, will be considering thelongevity of their designs.

One of the vital considerations forstadia will be getting therooflighting correct from the outset,to ensure that effective, evenlighting is provided to all playingareas, allowing good visibility forspectators and suitable light levelsto support healthy turf growth.

Rooflight materials must transmitlight, satisfy all durability, thermal, safety and fire requirements andcomplement the roof coveringmaterials and/or the glazing systembeing used. This is where FILONcan help with its extremely broad

range of GRP (the most commonlyused profiled glazing material)rooflights, as well as polycarbonatebarrel lights and a polycarbonatestructural glazing system.

During its 50 year history, FILONhas supplied GRP profiled sheetsto many of the UK’s best-knownstadia, including Twickenham,Birmingham City Football Club,Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea toname but a few.

GRP Rooflights

Sporting, industrial and commercialbuildings generally require diffusedlight which minimises glare andshadows. GRP provides high levelsof diffused light, in a versatile, cost-effective and durable material.FILON GRP profiled sheeting isavailable to match virtually anymetal or fibre cement sheet profileand is also ideal for barrel vaultdesign. The sheets incorporateFILON’s specially developed UV

absorbing surface protection whichvirtually eliminates long termdiscolouration. In fact, longevity is akey advantage of good quality GRProoflights. Correctly installed, theseprovide a non-fragile service life inexcess of 25 years.

FILON will work with designers andarchitects from the initial conceptstages to ensure that the correctmaterial and specifications areutilised from the outset

Polycarbonate Rooflights

Polycarbonate is an extremelyversatile material that is usedextensively in roof glazing.

The key properties of polycarb-onate are exceptional impactresistance, high levels of lighttransmission, good workability andexcellent fire rating.

FILON can supply flat or domedsystems using the long establishedAkraplast SunModul FinesseSystem. This is available in clearand tinted options with the clearoption and most of the tintsproviding direct light.

Growing market...FILON is creating the perfect indoor environment for nurseries and garden centres

FILON Products has developedits Fotolite GRP sheets to providethe perfect glazing material forcommercial greenhouses andgarden centres.

The Fotolite profiles aremanufactured from speciallydeveloped GRP and polyesterresins containing a high percentageof UV stabilisation to preventyellowing. Additional UV andweathering protection is providedby a special polyester filled surfaceincorporated during manufacture.

Fotolite profiles provide excellentlight diffusion to reduce glare, hotspots and shadows, ensuring

plants are evenly illuminated. Lighttransmission is high, particularly thephotosynthetic wavebands whichare essential for plant growth –hence the ‘Fotolite’ name.

An additional advantage is that thesheets are virtually opaque to UVlight which, if not controlled, cancause leaf burn.

FILON Fotolite is available inlengths to meet individual projectrequirements. It’s ideal for multi-span, tunnel and pitched roofgreenhouses. It’s also ideal forupgrading film covered tunnels.

FILON Products’ new Part LDesign Guidance documentsreveal the results of newresearch into the effects ofrooflights on energy saving.

The new 2006 Building Regulationsmake a fundamental change to themethod of compliance. The oldregulations were based on thermalvalues of the fabric of the building. The new regulations consider notonly the fabric of the building, butalso the energy efficiency of all themechanical services – boilers, hotwater and artificial lighting. Thethermal values and energyrequirements are converted into acarbon dioxide (CO2) emissioncalculation known as the carbonfootprint. To be compliant under thenew regulations, the proposedbuilding must achieve a prescribedlevel of CO2 savings over the same‘notional’ building designed to the2002 regulations.

ROOFLIGHTS SAVE ENERGY

Recent research carried out by DeMontfort University for NARM (TheNational Association of RooflightManufacturers), has establishedthat rooflights play a significant rolein achieving the prescribed TargetEmission Rate (TER).

Previously, designers consideredreducing rooflight area to minimiseheat loss, resulting in high use ofartificial lighting. The De Montfortresearch shows that the total energydemand for a building will reduce as

Crossflight approaches take-offFILON Products’ Product Devel-opment Manager, Les Williamsand his team have developed anew concept for rooflights to beused on standing seam roofs.

The new ‘Crossflight’ system hasbeen designed to work with anystanding seam construction andwill span openings up to 2.5m wide.

The system can provide U valuessimilar to composite rooflights,

without the need for under liners.

The system has been assembledand successfully tested at FILON’sStaffordshire factory. The firstCrossflight rooflights are alreadyscheduled for installation.

Ron Allen, Managing Director ofFILON Products, commented:“Crossflight is just one of a host ofexciting new FILON Products –watch this space.”

TecnaFlex roofing – a better solution to an age old problem

ROOFING & ROOF REFURBISHMENT

FILON’s Tecnaflex flat roofingsystem has allowed a flat roof inBury, Lancashire, to be cost-effectively refurbished without thetime and expense of removing theold roof.

This domestic garage and extensionwas the first contract carried out byCanopies UK using the Tecnaflexsystem.

The original roof had beenconstructed using chipboard with afelt covering. This had deterioratedafter 6 years and water hadpenetrated causing the chipboard tobecome damp and warped.

On the initial survey of the roof it wasnoted that although the chipboardwas still structurally sound, thewarping had caused dips in whichpuddles formed.

With its factory made base sheetwhich sits above existing roofs(allowing venting) the Tecnaflex flatroofing system provides an ideal wayof rectifying this problem without theneed to remove the old roof. With theunique patented MAP (mobileanchor plate) fixings in place, anymovement as the old roof dries out istaken up. The result is a very cost -effective, long life GRP roof system, which has been installed in one daywith no disturbance to the client.

Jason Eastwood, Canopies SalesDirector commented, "The Tecnaflexsystem fits well into our existingportfolio of canopies, porches androofing products and can onlystrengthen our market position. We’re looking forward to continuedgrowth in this area of our businessover the coming years”.

SIG Roofing have launched theirrange of GRP Flashings designedto suit three separate roofingsystems.

The flashings are an easy to useaccessory which compliments theSealoflex Liquid Seamless System,Single Ply Systems and are acrucial part of a wet laid GRPsystem which SIG are also able tosupply. The range has beendeveloped to complement all theabove systems as well as beingable to bond them together, givinga complete roof seal whichbecomes chemically bonded asone. The flashings are available

Tripp Batt & Co Ltd, a Con MechGroup company, were appointedto undertake roof refurbishmentat Henry Williams Group’s10,000m2 factory in Darlington.

The building houses offices andworkshops with engineeringfacilities for transport infrastructureproducts and systems.

The factory was originally built inthe 30’s and the asbestos cementroof had not undergone upgradesor refurbishment for many years.

Prior to Tripp Batt being appointed, part of the roof above the officeshad been sprayed externally with aurethane foam, in an attempt tocure water ingress problems. Thiscourse of action exacerbated theproblem, as the foam reacted withthe asbestos cement profiles, causing them to break down

further, leading to increased wateringress.

Trevor Crack of Tripp Batt takes upthe story: “Following inspection, itbecame clear that the best optionwas to over-roof the factory, usingFILON GRP profiles. We cut into thefoam, fixed bespoke galvanisedsteel spacers and laid rails for over-

cladding the roof, leaving space for80mm quilt insulation.”

To give the refurbished roof a moremodern appearance, FILON’s32/1000 profile was specified, however FILON over-roofingprofiles are available to matchvirtually any profile.
