It has been almost 12 months since the world witnessed one of the most dramatic economic events since the Great Depression. If this experience has taught us anything, it is that we must give the next generation of business leaders the knowledge and skills they need to work ethically and effectively within a market based economy.

Junior Achievement of British Columbia (JABC) is ideally positioned to respond to this need. The challenges we face everyday are the very issues to which JA dedicates itself: Work Readiness, Entrepreneurship and Financial Literacy. Each year, as we introduce our programs to new and existing schools, community partners and volunteers, we work hard to incorporate these three pillars into the JA experience.

In this last fiscal year JABC has taken a number of actions to ensure our programs are relevant to the needs of our communities. Last fall, the Economics of Staying in School program was re-introduced as Economics for Success with an increased focus on the concepts of success. We also finalized the rebrand of the Business Laureates of BC Hall of Fame to create a stronger link between the Laurates and the JA students, who aspire to follow in their footsteps.

JABC established new delivery partners in 2008 and as a result we have been able to reach more students in rural areas. In the spring, the Government of British Columbia announced an additional one million dollar grant to supplement the initial two million dollars we received in 2006. This funding allows us to develop our three-year strategic plan for long-term sustainability, with increasing

support from the private sector.

It has been a challenging year for business and for JABC which depends so much on the contributions and hands-on involvement of the business community. We are extremely grateful to all our supporters who help to inspire young people and foster the innovative spirit that will lead them to success.

Bridging the Talent Gap

Dr. Donald Rix Leadership Gift

In July 2009, Dr. Donald Rix announced a significant gift to Junior Achievement of British Columbia in support of strategic business education programs for BC’s youth. His generosity includes an inaugural endowment donation of $200,000 to establish the “Dr. Donald Rix Inspiring Business Excellence” Endowed Scholarship Fund. Awards will be given annually to top Junior Achievement students from rural communities or to Aboriginal or immigrant students to further their post secondary education. An additional $200,000 will be given in support of Junior Achievement’s educational program delivery over the next four years.

A legend in Canadian scientific and business circles, Dr. Rix is one of BC’s leading entrepreneurs in the field of life sciences today. Over the past 40 years he has nurtured

“A truly rewarding part of my career is encouraging and coaching young scientists and entrepreneurs. I believe they are the future

of BC and that we must draw on our youth from around the province to ensure a strong and vibrant economy. Many of these fine future leaders live in more remote or difficult circumstances

and I wanted to partner with Junior Achievement to support them in their educational pursuits.”

- Donald B. Rix, M.D., C.M., O.B.C.

the growth of two private lab operations, financed the work of dozens of fellow scientists and given untold millions of his wealth back into the community. He is a community volunteer, generous philanthropist, angel investor and mentor to countless young entrepreneurs. He is an enthusiastic supporter of youth, education, the arts and entrepreneurship.

Dr. Rix was inducted into the Business Laureates of British Columbia Hall of Fame in 2006.

ABC Business Challenge

Celebrates Ten Years

The BC Business Challenge has certainly evolved over its lifetime. In January 2009, JABC celebrated ten years of competition with a new venue, refreshed branding and the largest turnout of students teams to date. The Challenge brings JA Titan Business Game participants together to compete in computer generated markets with teams of similar abilities and experience.

Team “Vikings”, from Burnaby North Secondary who placed first in the Titans’ marketplace, represent their

school and community with pride.

Team “SpiderMonkies”, from Georges P. Vanier Secondary in Courtenay, who placed first in the

Executives’ marketplace, strategize during the intense day of game play.

Team “GPSabres”, from Guildford Park Secondary in Surrey, race the clock to place first in the

Entrepreneurs’ marketplace.

In 2008, Junior Achievement of British Columbia launched a provincewide volunteer recruitment ad campaign. JA volunteers from the Lower Mainland participated in the print ads, which were featured in publications such as BCBusiness Magazine, Douglas Magazine and The Business Examiner.

On February 14, 2009, a new Risk Management workshop attracted 45 JA high school students who spent their Valentine’s Saturday learning from expert speakers from Methanex, BC Ferries and FM Global.

AJ2008-09 Program Highlights

In April, former Minister of Small Business, Technology and Economic Development, Ida Chong, paid a visit to Oak Bay Secondary School in Victoria to present

a one million dollar cheque to a JABC class. This provincial grant will help Junior Achievement maintain our current expansion as we develop a

sustainable Program Delivery Plan over the next year.

The after-school Company Program – A Student Venture grew in popularity this past year among grade 11 and 12 students. A number of student

teams sold their products at public markets including Granville Island, Vancouver Farmers Market, Portobello West and Abbotsford Farm

and Country Market.

Paralympian Andrea Holmes recognized the impressive accomplishments of JA students in her

keynote speech at the Celebrate JA! provincial awards in June, 2009. This event is a way for Junior

Achievement to pay tribute to student award winners and the volunteers, educators and donors

who support them.

JABC Alumni Network

Since 1955, over a quarter of a million students have participated in Junior Achievement of British Columbia programs. Today we hear from alumni on a regular basis, and from all over the world. The memories and experiences they share capture the very best of Junior Achievement’s exciting record of success.

This year we launched our Alumni Ambassador Club, a program that invites recent JABC graduates to participate as volunteers at events, tradeshows and conferences. Young alumni can also take their participation one step further by promoting JA’s after-school program to other achievers.

Are you an Achiever who participated in JA programs? Let us know so we can keep you informed of upcoming projects and events. Visit www.jabc.org
