• 5 month pilot program focusing on movement in the classroom

• 42% of Kentuckians are inactive
• National average is 27%
• 38% of KY children (10-17) are overweight
• Children (8-18) spend 7+ hrs/day in static activities outside of
school – TV, computer
• In KY, no elementary/middle school PE requirement (one
semester of PE in HS)
• Schools are cutting PE time and positions
• Poor diets
• CATCH (Child & Adolescent Trial for Cardiovascular Health)
• Take 10
• SPARK (Sports, Play & Active Recreation for Kids)
• Let’s Move in Schools

• A little less conversation, a little more action…
• Implement a school-based intervention to integrate physical
activity into the classroom on non-PE days.
• Use a measurable tool to evaluate the effectiveness of the
intervention.

• 6 elementary schools (K-5)
• Central/Eastern KY
• 2 classroom teachers, PE teacher, principal attended training by university
investigator
• Return to sender…
• Equipment grant for participating schools

• Videos, physical activity stations, jump rope activities, CV, strength,
flexibility activities
• Integrates activity with academics – match suitable activity with daily
lesson
• 10 minute segments (goal was 30 minutes a day)
• 5 month intervention
• Steps per day via Blue Suede Shoes
• Body Mass Index
• Cognitive performance - mathematics
• Significant difference in step counts/day
• ~3000 to ~4500 steps/day (50% increase) on non-PE days
• No change in BMI
• Significant increase in math scores
Take 10 program increased physical activity without negatively
affecting cognitive performance.
BMI changes take time and are due to many variables.
Program is a useful adjunct to PE for schools to change the
behaviors of children and the school culture.
