Jackson Rancheria will present Indigenous in con-cert on Friday, February 13, at 8 p.m. in the Grand Oak Ball-room at the Hotel.

Tickets are $40 from Tick-etmaster but Dreamcatcher’s Club members can purchase tickets for just $20 at the Jack-son Rancheria Box Office. The Box Office is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. and ac-cepts cash, credit cards, and Dreamcatcher’s Club points. Must be 18 to purchase tickets or attend the show.

Mato Nanji has always provided the heartbeat of the band Indigenous, along with the warm dusty voice and the soaring, spirited guitar fire-works that have earned the group from South Dakota’s Nakota Nation a place among roots rock’s elite.

But with the emotionally charged and musically viscer-al “Broken Lands,” the band’s latest album, Mato makes a transformation from spark-plug to visionary.

“I’ve wanted to make an al-bum like this for years,” Mato explains, “but to a certain ex-tent my hands were tied. Now I feel like I’ve achieved so many things I’ve wanted this band to be. The songs I’m singing are more personal. The sound of the band has broadened, and we were able to explore all the influences that are woven into that sound - blues, soul, R&B, and even country - more than ever. And the guitar playing is more controlled, to really let the songs speak for themselves. On top of all that, I’ve grown as a singer. After being frustrated for a while, all of this makes me very happy.”

“What it amounts to,” Mato announces, “is that Indigenous is a brand new band.”

He means that literally. The group started as a family band including his

brother, sister and cousin, but after the others pursued other musical paths, Mato was left to carry on Indigenous. “Playing with my family for ten years was a lot of fun, but it was time to grow.”

So Mato recruited guitarist Kris La-ger, keyboardist Jeremiah Weir, bassist Aaron Wright, and drummer John Fairch-ild to tour behind “Chasing the Sun.” They also appear on “Broken Lands,” joined by drummer Kirk Stallings, percussionist Chico Perez, and Mato’s wife Leah Nanji on backing vocals.

We’re adding something new to our entertainment schedule for 2009 with the introduction of dinner theater presented by Main Street Theatre Works of Sutter Creek.

The first presentation will be a female version of Neil Simon’s “The Odd Couple” starring Lee Marie Kelly and Shaleen Schmutzer-Smith. Both were last seen in MSTW’s “Enchanted April,” for which both received Elly nominations for Best Leading Actress in a Comedy.

In 1985, Simon revised “The Odd Couple” for a female cast, headed by Sally Struthers and Rita Moreno. It was based on the same story line and lead characters as the original play, now called Florence Ungar and Olive Madison. The poker game became Trivial Pursuit and the Pigeon sisters became the Costazuela brothers.

This hilarious show will be presented in the Grand Oak Ballroom at the Hotel on weekends from February 20 through March 14 with Sunday matinees on March 1 and 8.

For the dinner shows, the doors open at 6:15 p.m., dinner is served at 6:30 p.m., and the show starts at 7:45 p.m. For Sunday matinees, doors open at 12:15 p.m., lunch is served at 12:30 p.m., and the show begins at 1:45 p.m.

Tickets are $40 for the dinner and show, $17.50 for the show only, and $30 for the lunch and matinee performance, $16 for the matinee show only. Tickets are available at the Jackson Rancheria Box Office as well as Lizzie Ann’s Bubblegum Books on Main Street in Sutter Creek and

can be charged by phone at 209-267-5680 (10 a.m. to 5 p.m. only).

Main Street Theater Works is excited about performing their dinner theatre productions inside the Jackson Rancheria

Hotel. “It’s a great opportunity for us to get added exposure and be inside a beautiful venue,”

says Artistic Director Susan McCandless. The ballroom seats 90 for dinner and lunch performances, and ample free parking is available. Due to renovations at the hotel, Hotel Valet is unavailable.

Main Street Theatre Works is a professionally oriented, rural theatre company performing in the heart of Amador County. Now in their 14th season, MSTW continues to bring professional and community theatre artists together to produce classical and contemporary plays. An ensemble of gifted actors, directors, and designers lend their vision and skills to create rich seasons of comedy and drama. The group also produces outdoor productions at the Kennedy Mine Amphitheatre.

Mickey Joseph will bring his rubber-faced, non-stop comedic mania to the Jackson Rancheria Comedy Club on Thursday, February 5.

The show is in the Grand Oak Ballroom at the Hotel. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. Must be 18 or older to purchase tickets or attend the show.

Tickets are $20 and are available online or by phone from Ticketmaster or in person at the Jackson Rancheria Box Office. The Box Office is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. and accepts cash, credit cards, and Dreamcatcher’s Club points.

Joseph says he was born to an Italian immigrant jazz musician and Croatian seamstress who learned to speak English by watching television. Their learning curve accelerated greatly when they figured out how to “turna da demed ting on.”

He grew up in the San Francisco area where he attended Catholic school, which would later develop into his unique style of physical comedy that includes bobbing, weaving, and most importantly, pleading for mercy.

While attending the American Academy of

D r a m a t i c Arts in

Pasadena he supported himself working as a waiter. After his boss observed his tableside antics, celebrity impressions, and roll juggling, the boss suggested he dive into show business, any business other than his restaurant.

Thus he entered the work of stand up comedy, moved to Hollywood, joined an improv group, and begin to write and perform.

Each of his facial muscles in a tiny, little contortionist, twisting, turning, and squirming throughout his act, bringing, with each new expression, a fresh, animated, even more absurd

and hilarious i n d i v i d u a l . Their conflicting attitudes and constantly shifting opinions on such timely topics as sports, drug abuse, single parenthood, drunk driving, family and religion, have brought down the

house in many top comedy clubs. His impressions run the gamut from

Woody Allen to Stevie Wonder, Jerry Lewis, Elvis Presley, Jack Nicholson and Ricky “Babaloo” Ricardo. It has been said by many who have seen his work that Mickey Joseph does the best Phil Silvers in the business...and they’re right!

Enjoy a buffet dinner and classic movie with us on Wednesday, March 4, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

We’ll be serving dinner and showing “High Noon” starring Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly on the big screens in the Grand Oak Ballroom.

“High Noon” is a 1952 classic Western that is preserved in the National Film Registry as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” It was considered by many to be an allegory of the failure by intellectuals to combat the rise of McCarthyism and the blacklisting of Hollywood actors, writers, and directors.

In the film Gary Cooper portrays a retiring lawman about to leave town with his new bride who seeks allies among fearful townspeople when an outlaw he put in prison returns with his gang to take revenge. In the end he faces the four gunmen alone at high noon.

Other actors who can be glimpsed in the movie include Lloyd Bridges, Lon Chaney Jr., Harry Morgan, Lee Van Cleef, Sheb Wooley, and Jack Elam.

Much of the movie was filmed in nearby Tuolumne County. Columbia State Historic Park was the location for the town scenes. The church in the movie is Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church in Tuolumne City, and the train station was in Jamestown.

For Elite and VIP Dreamcatcher’s Club members, the event is free and you’ll receive $20 in Promo Slot Play.

All others can choose between two packages: The $70 package includes dinner for

two, a hotel room (subject to availability), the movie, plus $20 Promo Slot Play per person (ask for offer: HIGH). The $20 per person package

includes the dinner, movie, and $20 Promo Slot Play (ask for offer: NOON).

Seating is limited and these events tend to sell out fast, so RSVP to 800-822-WINN today to reserve your place.

Don’t miss the chance to see this unforgettable movie with your friends at Jackson Rancheria.

It’s high time to see ‘High Noon’ again

There may still be a limited number of

tickets available for the February 4 movie, ‘Pillow Talk’ with Rock Hudson and Doris Day. Call 800-822-WINN to check on availability.

Floyd and Verna from Byron ended 2008 with a winning streak at Jackson Rancheria.

On December 31, Floyd, a retired production supervisor for Dupont, got a royal flush on a dollar video poker machine and won $5,904.

His wife Verna, an Elite player, says she doesn’t usually play the three times poker machines and had never played the five times machines, but decided to try it that day. She ended up hitting three jackpots, a royal flush and two four-of-a-kind jackpots, all on the same machine, for

Alexander from Stockton doesn’t usually play the Wheel of Fortune machines, but sat down to play next to his wife and ended up winning a MegaJackpot of $137,548.34 on January 10.

Alexander, who is Director of Sales and Marketing for a major Stockton hotel, says he and his wife have been coming to Jackson Rancheria for several years and usually come in a couple of times a month. This was definitely their lucky day.

Asked what he thought when the MegaJackpot hit, he replied, “I couldn’t think because my wife was screaming so much.”

“It was great,” he adds. “I still can’t believe it. This never happens to me. It was a really cool experience.”

He’s not sure yet what he plans to do

with the money, except buy furniture and things for the house.

Jackson Rancheria Casino has had more MegaJackpot winners than any other casino in Northern California and has paid out over $21 million on these popular machines.

Roberto and Andrea from Stockton come to Jackson Rancheria Casino regularly, but their visit on Friday, December 19, is one they will never forget. That is the day Roberto proposed to Andrea on the stage in Dalton Town Hall.

Roberto explains why he chose the casino to pop the question. “A while ago I got to go up on stage and I won $500. I think it was Mardi Gras or something like that. Andrea’s always wanted to go up on stage and win something. So it occurred to me, that was the perfect place to propose.”

But Roberto didn’t stop with just making all the arrangements with casino personnel; he also arranged for almost a dozen of their family members to be on hand to witness the big event, all without tipping Andrea off.

Andrea recalls that her mother was driving down from Oregon and was worried about the weather and if she’d be able to make it on time. “I didn’t know why Friday was so important,” Andrea says.

When the time came, a Player’s Club representative went to where Andrea was playing and told her that she had won a special Christmas drawing and should come to the stage to get her prize.

As she walked up to the stage Andrea didn’t even notice all her family members. Roberto had told them they could play as long as they played in one area where he knows she never plays.

As Andrea approached the stage they all gathered in front of the stage, but she was so excited about getting to go up on stage and win something that she didn’t even notice them. “I had no clue,” she says.

And then there were the balloons. “I hate balloons!” she says. “They freak

me about.” The stage was all decked out in balloons for the $700,000 Gift Extravaganza promotion.

Andrea continues, “I was thinking, this is some sick game where I have to pop balloons to win. But when she (Promotions Coordinator Pauline Hopkins) explained about the game, that was OK.”

Andrea got to punch out a spot on the punch board to determine what her prize was. She says as soon as she reached in and felt the ring box, she realized what it was.

That was when Roberto joined her on stage and asked her to marry him.

She said yes, to the delight of the family members and everyone in Dalton Town Hall. There were cheers and hugs all around.

Roberto, who is a chef at the Stockton Golf & Country Club, and Andrea, who processes birth certificates for Dameron Hospital, have set the wedding date for November 9, 2009. The two have known each other since the third grade.

Both commented on how wonderful everyone was at the casino, arranging the fake drawing in order to get her up on the stage, and making the entire day a memorable one for everyone. Their’s was truly a Rancheria Style™ proposal.

He said “Will you…” She said “Yes”

Andrea beams as Roberto proposes marriage on the Dalton Town Hall stage.

Stevan Jeremic is one of the friendly, smiling people you meet in the Main Street Cage.

He was born in Lodi and moved to Valley Springs when he was just two years old. After attending Calaveras High School, he moved to Oregon for a while where he lived with family and friends and worked in sheet metal.

After moving back here, he got a job in Bingo at the Casino. When Bingo was closed he transferred to Cage where he’s been ever since.

The best part of being in the Cage, according to Steven, is “the work environment, the people I’m surrounded by, and being able to meet all kinds of people.”

When not making change, paying out slot tickets, and assisting guests, Stevan likes “going to the movies, hanging out with friends,

snowboarding, and going to the gym.”Stevan was brought to our attention

by Ronald from Stockton, who wrote “Stevan is very courteous, upbeat, and attentive to all your patrons’ requests and needs.”

“I remember when we first met. I brought about 50 slot tickets for him to cash out. Before I could get a word in, he was teaching me how to be more efficient, saving me time and embarrassment holding all these tickets and tying up other patrons trying to cash out.”

“Since then we always joke about it. Even now, when I pass his window, I always tell him I will be by later with my hand full of tickets for him to cash.”

Stevan is a great example of guest service done Rancheria Style™.

The other sonic addition is Leah Nanji’s harmonies on much of Broken Lands, “I’ve always been a big fan of women singing backing vocals,” Mato says. “Leah was able to do some of that on ‘Chasing the Sun,’ but to me her voice is an essential part of ‘Broken Lands’.”

Leah was also essential as a song-writer, co-authoring all of the songs with Mato except his self-penned “Just Can’t Hide.”

“This is the first time I’ve had a hand in writing every song for an Indigenous album,” Leah says. “It’s very liberating, because I feel like I’ve truly invested myself.”

“Broken Lands makes me feel like I did when Indigenous was just starting out,” Mato says. “We were excited about making music and making records, and maybe getting to tour all over the Unit-ed States, which we did. “Now Indige-nous is a new band again and I feel that

same excitement,” he continues. “But this time I want to take these new songs and this great sounding band all over the world.”
