JHS Class of 2022 Requirements

• Math – 3 credits

• English – 4 credits

• Social Sciences – 2½ credits

• Science – 2 credits

• PE/Drivers’ Ed/Health – 4

• Consumer Ed – ½ credit

• Electives – 8 ½ credits

Most College Requirements

Scheduling a Four Year Plan

• An individual appointment with your school counselor:

– Develop flexible plan for the next four years to ensure a solid college and/or career pathway

– Receive assistance in making college/career decisions and answering questions

• Four Year Planning appointments will be scheduled later this spring.

• Full Year Geography: Freshman Year

General Physical Education

• Units in individual sports, team sports, and fitness

training including but not limited to badminton,

basketball, dance, flag football, eclipse ball,

soccer, speedball, tennis, track and field, ultimate

frisbee, volleyball, and whiffle ball.

• 5-6 units per semester

Fitness Physical Education• Successful completion of General PE previous

semester

Requirements:– Students must have a cumulative average of a 60%

or higher to earn PE credit.

– 4 credits of PE are required for graduation (including Health and Drivers Ed)

Drivers Education Department

• Pass 8 academic classes the previous two semesters prior to enrolling in drivers education

• Attendance is essential – 30 classroom hours

• Summer: 15 years of age by July 31

• Semester 1: 15 years of age by Nov. 30

• Semester 2: 15 years of age by March 31

• ¼ Credit for Classroom

• ¼ Credit for Behind the Wheel

Science Department

• Freshmen take either Biology 514 or Honors Bio 516 (more on next slide)

• Sophomores meet a physical science requirement (Physical Science or Chemistry)

• It is recommended that college-bound students take four years of science including Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.

• Placement in Biology 514 or Honors Biology 516 will depend on the following: MAP Reading scores, Q1 & Q2 Science grades, student/family preferences.

• The differences between 514 & 516 primarily involve the use of analytical and independent problem solving skills.

English Department

• Four credits of English are required for graduation from JHS.

• The English Department offers college and career, honors, and Advanced Placement (AP) classes.

• Freshman year students choose between 106 (college and career) and 108 (honors).

English Department

• The JHS English Department requires a significant amount of outside of class independent reading.

• Writing formal essays using the Modern Language Association (MLA) formatting and citation will be required.

• You will often be required to read/present/discuss in front of your peers for assessment.

• All of these skills are to prepare you for your journey through and after JHS.

• An Individualized Education Plan (IEP) determines what types of services are required for each student.

• The IEP will determine what courses will be taken in the Special Education and Regular Education settings.

• Students with an IEP are served by a case manager that they meet with once daily during their assigned Advisory time.
