QUALITY ASSURANCE OF CLINICAL LABORATORY PRACTICE PROGRAM

Updated August 18, 2009

The OAML's Quality Assurance Program is now in its fourteenth year.

By providing practitioners with consensus guidelines, developed by panels of experts, the OAML has been able to guide practitioners in appropriate laboratory testing and in interpreting test results. Our Guidelines for Clinical Laboratory Practice are developed with practitioners using community laboratory services in mind, but have gained credibility with hospital-based laboratorians, diagnostic manufacturers in both the United States and Europe and with academics worldwide.

Guidelines are subject to regular review and revision to ensure currency.

When the OAML has something important to communicate to ordering practitioners, the OAML develops a Communiqué. Communiqués and guidelines are distributed, by laboratory courier, directly to more than 20,000 physician offices throughout Ontario.

To learn more...

the Standards Council ofCanada and Accreditation Canada because they are both involved islaboratory assessment and regularly need assessors.

Inspection Bodies

Inspection body accreditation is the process of assessing and publicly recognizing the integrity,  reliability and

technical competence of an organization's inspection services.

6

Page 7: Jacob Cv Etc

Examples of inspection services are varied and can cover diverse subjects such as the installation of specialty

electrical equipment, gas-piping systems as well as home inspections.

The role of inspection bodies involves assessing the safety and fitness for use of specific products and materials

and, confirming that the associated facilities, equipment and systems are appropriate to the work being

performed. However inspections are certainly not limited to physical assets and may also include an assessment

of services.

The accreditation of an organization's inspection services by the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) is a means

of demonstrating that those services (that fall within the scope of their formal accreditation) conform to an

accepted set of requirements.

The University of Toronto regularly hires people with laboratoryskills in the research setting, and this does not require CSMLSstatus.

The University is committed to ensuring that the diversity of our staff, students and faculty reflects our local and global community. We are working to remove barriers to employment for people who are usually underrepresented in Canada's workforce – Aboriginal people, people with disabilities, visible minorities, sexual minorities and women. Our programs also ensure that employees at the University are treated with justice and fairness. For more information, please go to the equity section on our website.

Are all the jobs in downtown Toronto? No. We have three campuses: St. George, in downtown Toronto; Mississauga, to the west of the city; and Scarborough, in the city's east end. Our career site regularly posts a wide variety of challenging jobs from all three campuses. For more information on the U of T campuses, you can also check our campus maps.

What kinds of jobs are available at U of T?Professor, accountant, campus police constable, counselor, communications specialist, caretaker, operating engineer, sports coach, research officer, lab technician, writer, finance manager, electrician and IT specialist are only a few of the many job opportunities available at U of T. If you are interested in a specific job at U of T, and you do not see that job posted today, please remember that what you see posted is only a snapshot of the types of jobs that we recruit for every

12

Page 13: Jacob Cv Etc

year. Our staffing requirements vary; therefore we suggest that you continue to visit the careers site for exciting new opportunities.

What do the different employment groups mean? Will I be in a union?Depending on the duties and responsibilities associated with a position, an employee is classed in one of six employment groups (unionized, professional/managerial staff, advancement professional staff, confidential staff, research associates and ESL instructional staff), each of which is governed under a specific set of policies. Each of the University's 21 union groups also has an individual collective agreement, and faculty and librarians have their own agreement and policies.Over 80 per cent of the University's non-academic staff are unionized, including library workers, operating engineers, administrative and technical staff, police and skilled trades and services personnel. Non-unionized employees include research associates, professional/managerial staff, confidential administrative staff and ESL instructional staff. More information on the different staff groups can be found on our Staff site.

What does “appointment type” refer to?Each job posting indicates how the position is funded and includes details about the position.

Continuing Employees have no predetermined end date. Term Employees are hired for an initial appointment of at least six (6) months in length and

have a predetermined end date. Part-time Employees have appointments based on less than 100 per cent of the full-time

hours of work.

We look for qualified individuals who can contribute to the diversification of ideas within our community and are committed to our vision of being among the world's finest research-intensive universities in the world.

I saw a list of questions about equity. Do I have to answer? Will it affect my chance to get hired? All questions to do with equity are voluntary and your answers are viewed only by U of T's Employment Equity Officer. Your answers are not accessible by any human resources staff or hiring managers and will not affect your employment application. We encourage you to answer the questions to help us to measure our progress in maintaining an equitable and diverse work environment.

AttachmentsWhat kind of files can I attach to my candidate record?

You can attach a copy of your resume if you wish to submit it along with your candidate record. We recommend that you attach only a generic resume as these attached files follow you on each application. If you prefer to tailor your resume for each application, you should copy-and-paste your resume into the text box provided. You may also wish to submit references, transcripts or other items if they are required for the position. Please note that the search tool that recruiters use to search for candidates will not be able to analyze the content of some attached files (mostly image files and zip compressed files). Please keep in mind that once you attach a file you are unable to go back and edit the document.

Can I attach my cover letter? The University prefers that you provide your cover letter in plain text in the cover letter box provided.

What if I want to submit tailored resumes for each job that I am applying? For each application, you may cut and paste your resume into the resume box provided. If you are copying and pasting from a Word document, you may lose your formatting. If you choose to attach your specific resume, please save your attachment beginning with the naming convention of: FirstInitial LastName – Posting Number (e.g. J Doe – 0600083). If you have more than one resume attached, please specify the resume that you would like the recruiter and hiring manager to review for the position that you are applying in the “comments about the file” section. All attached files will be connected to future applications.

Can I delete my resume(s)?You can delete some or all of the files. However, please note that if you delete a resume for a position that you applied for and are being currently being considered for, the hiring manager and recruiter will no longer have access to your resume.

TroubleshootingWhat should I do if I can't apply online?

If you are having difficulties submitting your application, email [email protected] and explain your problem in your email. Please note that this is not an alternate email for sending applications or resumes. For those who do not have computers, our website can be accessed from terminals in places such as public libraries or internet cafes.

I work at U of T, but do not have regular access to a computer. Is there another way for me to access the jobs listings?

Jobs are also posted at various points around campus. Your HR generalist can tell you which one is closest to you. As well, there are computer terminals at 215 Huron Street, 8th floor (for U of T employees), libraries across campus and the Staff Development Learning Lab at 256 McCaul Street.

I made a mistake on my resume. Can I resend? Yes. It is possible to update your profile and resume at any point until a job posting closes.

You asked for an email address but I don't have one. What should I do? There are a variety of ways to obtain a free email account. You may wish to visit websites such as Yahoo Mail or Hotmail to register for an email account or to obtain more information. U of T employees who do not have an email account should speak with their manager about setting up a UTOR email.

Who do I contact if I have problems applying online? If you are having problems applying online, you can contact web support at [email protected]. Please explain your problem in your email and we will get in touch with you as soon as possible. This is not an alternate email for sending applications or resumes.

What should I do if I've forgotten my password? If you've forgotten your password, simply log in as a returning candidate and click “Forgot Password”. You will receive further instructions on setting up a new password via email.

What should I do if none of the choices for a question is appropriate for me?Please provide the answer that most closely matches your situation, as the application must be complete before it will be processed. You may wish to explain or elaborate on your choice in your cover letter.

How do I unsubscribe from receiving Job Posting Notifications? You can unsubscribe to this setting at any time. Just log into your candidate profile, and then follow these instructions:

Click “Submit/Modify your profile”. Click “I am a returning user”. Enter your email address and password. Proceed through the first few pages until you find the box: “Accept invitations by email on

career opportunities matching this profile”. Deselect the checkmark to stop receiving job matches.

To reactivate this feature, follow the same process but select the checkmark.I'm using a Hotmail account. Why do the emails I receive from U of T look distorted?

You may note some formatting problems in the emails from UTORecruit, our online recruitment system, to your Hotmail account. This is a result of the difference in encoding styles between our system, which uses the International Standard UTF-8 and Microsoft Hotmail, which uses Western European (Windows). To view our correspondence correctly, Hotmail users can either:

1. Manually change the encoding style to UTF-8. 2. Open the html file that is attached to the email correspondence.

I was sent a posting notification, but can't find the job. What's going on?U of T believes strongly in promoting and developing its staff. One of the provisions of the collective agreement covering our largest employee groups is that some jobs are first listed internally to members of that union before they are available to others. It is possible that you have received a notification of a posting that is only available to members of specific U of T employment groups. Before applying for position for which you have been sent a notification, please go to our career site and ensure that the posting is listed in the jobs section that matches your employment status (eg. USW, Internal, External). If you see the posting, you can apply online.

16

Page 17: Jacob Cv Etc

If you do not wish to receive further job posting notifications, you may unsubscribe. You can subscribe again while applying for a position or reviewing your profile.

I've asked to be notified of jobs at U of T, but have not received any notifications. Is there a problem? If you have not received a notification of postings, it may be because your email information is not correct in the system. Please check your profile to ensure all of your contact information is accurate. Changes can be made directly in your profile.

U of Ottawa,

Queen's University in Kingston.

The Provincial Laboratory system in Ontario, also does not requireCSMLS status.

In Ontario, there are a number of community-based private laboratoriesthat are prepared to hire without CSMLS status.

The Michener Institute in Toronto is a training facility whichregularly looks for skilled teachers.

Canada laboratories that do environmental - food, water, soil, animal testing (Laboratories such as Maaxam) are very busyThese jobs are not normally a target for CSMLS accreditedtechnologists.

In addition to these, it is my understanding that many with laboratoryskills have found their way into the Pharmaceutical Industry (againToronto has many Pharmaceutical companies).

So there are many places in Ontario, and indeed Canada where trainedand experienced technologists can regularly find work.
