Jacobs Design Innovation Institute (JDII)
JDII Background
CoE Advisory Board Document (April 2013):
“this is an ideal time to extend and grow the role of design in our educational model at all levels: undergraduate, graduate and continuing education”
JDII Genesis
$20 million pledged by Paul and Stacy Jacobs in May 2013. • Berkeley Alums, long-time supporters of CoE and the campus.• Goal is a 24,000 sq ft, 3.5-story building North of Soda Hall.
“In our interconnected innovation economy, it is not enough to provide our future engineering leaders with technical skills,… They must also learn how to work in interdisciplinary teams, how to iterate designs rapidly, how to manufacture sustainably, how to combine art and engineering, and how to address global markets.”
- Paul Jacobs, Clinton Global Initiative 2013.
JDII Background
Themes:• Real-world problems and needs• Innovation through building• Rapid prototyping• Interdisciplinarity• Design for sustainable manufacturing• Global markets
