Jai Jinendra / Pranam
Happy New Year! We hope each of you enjoyed a relaxing break with family
and friends. As with every New Year, we reflect on how we performed over the
previous year and make plans on how to make the upcoming year even better.
Both the Executive Team and Board of Trustees met and are working to layout
programs and projects for the coming year.
We are looking forward to celebrating several events in the near future including
a 22nd annual fund raising event on March 21st ( Kal Aaj Aur Kal ) at Novi SCS
center and Mahavir Janma Kalyanak on April 11th. Please save the date for both
of these events!
Our EC and BOT budget for this year is estimated to be $335,000. Our temple
facility is now 15 years old and continues to require ongoing maintenance. The
annual fundraising dinner is one of the major events that generates funds that
help us carry out many activities during the year. You can support in several
ways including: pledging, personal and business advertising in the souvenir
booklet and most importantly, bringing your non-Jain friends for the event as all
are welcome. We are thankful to Shailesh & Jyoti Jain, Dr. Ashok Jain and Dr.
Dinesh Shah for coming forward to lead this event.
Our society is going to celebrate its 40th anniversary this year. Looking back, our
current membership demographics are different than in the past and we need to
address and conduct many activities keeping the needs of all members in mind.
Currently, the Core team has been established and it is working on planning a
future "Jain Community Center (JCC) “which can meet the needs of a widely
diverse membership group including seniors and younger generations. We need
to preserve, progress, and pass on our center and traditions to future generations.

Jainism – way to live DO YOU HAVE A GOOD MEMORY? Practice of “Avdhan”
Jain Munishri Ajitchandra Sagarji Maharaj , who had achieved “Maha-shatavdhani” status by
performing 200 Avdhan in March 2012 in Mumbai, has now been conferred with “Ardha-
SahastrAvdhani” status after performing 500 Avdhan on Sunday, 16th November 2014 at Sardar
Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium, NSCI, Worli, Mumbai. A panel of 7 judges lead by Mr. Mohit Shah,
Chief Justice of Bombay High Court presented the Status Certificate for successfully completion
of 500 Avdhan to Munishri Ajitchandra Sagarji. This achievement could be officially registered
as a world record. This would be remembered item-wise in the memory of Munishri even six
month later.
This rare historic event of 500
Avdhan has been achieved
after a span of 500 years in the
Jain history.
The event was spread over 7
hours in the presence of over
5500 people witnessing in the
stadium, which was also
watched by lakhs of live TV
audience on various channels.
Dignitaries attending the event
at the stadium included Mr. Prakash Mehta- Industry Minister of Maharashtra, Mrs.
Jayawantiben Mehta –Ex Union Power Minister, Mr. V.N. Dhoot-Chairman of Videocon
Group, Mr. Bharat Shah- Diamond King, Mr. Subodh Kumar- Ex Municipal Commissioner of
Mumbai, Pujya Sadhviji Chandanashriji –Head of Virayatan, Sadhus of Swaminarayan
Sampradaya etc. More than 100 Jain Sadhu & Sadhviji were sitting on the dais.
Avdhan in Jainism is the practice of covering multiple activities in a single act of attention.
This power is not just inherent genius but an outcome of the Jain tradition of penance,
renunciation, self control, meditation and devotion to Saraswati.
24 years old Jain Mahashatavdhani Munishri Ajitchandra Sagarji Maharaj originally belonged
to Oonja-Gujarat. At the age of 12, he renounced the world and became Jain Sadhu. Thereafter,
he underwent learning, meditation, maun & other sadhana for 12 years. He has memorized 22
Agam (out of 45 agam), which consisted of more than 20,000 Shlokas. He has been maintaining
Maun (Silence) since last 9 years.
Dr. Sudhir Shah, a neurosurgeon & Professor of Neurology, while addressing the gathering
informed “We have witnessed a rare feat in neuroscience today. A human brain can hold 90
million books, each of 1,000 pages. However, we hardly use this nature’s gift”.

Acknowledgement Tribute to late shri shashibhai shah
One of our lifetime member – Shri Shashibhai Shah – passed away on January 17, 2015.
Shashibhai was very instrumental in building our temple and maintenance. JSGD would like to
recognize and cherish Shashibhai’s contribution in construction of the Temple and Growth of
the Society.
Shashibhai made an outstanding contribution to the growth of the Society and the construction
of the Temple. He was a go to person who always made himself available behind the scenes to
get variety of jobs done properly. For instance, he took charge of carving the “Shilas” under the guidance of
Pujya Gurudev Chitrabhanuji when they did not arrive from India, organize raffles during the annual Fund
Raising Dinners, keeping records of pledges for easy follow-up and reviewing HVAC drawings of the Temple.
He negotiated maintenance contracts and prepared maintenance schedule. With his technical skills - Engineering
Knowledge and always burning desire he was in front to solve many of the problems of our Jain Temple - such
as negotiating maintenance contracts, preparing maintenance schedule and setting up procedures as preventive
measures.
Shashibhai built many items that we still use on regular basis in our temple. He will be remembered when we
ring the bells in the temple as he hung them from the beam. He designed pulley system for shikhar to raise and
lower the dhwaja.
Shashibhai also participated and helped in many of the society’s activities like puja preparations, pratikramans,
ayambil olis and swadhyay.
He will be missed at the temple. We will cherish his memories and many contributions. We are blessed that he
was member of JSGD to help and guide us. We pray that Mahavir Swami gives strength to Shitalben, Shamita,
Suchita and their entire family to bear the pain of his loss with equanimity.

JOY Web Page http://jsgd.org/joy.php
Jai Jinendra,
JOY has had a lot of really fun activities! We have many things in stock for all you JOY members! Recently in December, we had our first ever JOY bake sale! Through that, we raised $119. This money will be donated to SASHA Farms in Manchester, Michigan. For those of you who don't know, SASHA Farm is the Midwest's largest farm animal sanctuary. SASHA Farms doesn't just provide food and water, veterinary care and a roof over the animal's heads, but they also give the animal residents affection, social interaction with others of their own species, and a sense of security. It is truly a great cause and we are very glad we could help them. In January we had our annual Winter Camp! This took place at a cottage in Port Sanillac. Over here, numerous JOY members came together to have interactive Jain discussions, learn the importance of responsibilities, and have fun amongst their peers. Again, it was a huge success. Kids were able to make their own food and were able to play a bunch of fun games as they socialized with each other. It was a very enjoyable time and we hope you all can join us next year!
JOY has many upcoming events planned as well! On February 22nd, after study class, there is a
YJA social event at the Country Lanes bowling alley. Many young Jains from Detroit, Ann Arbor, and all over Michigan will come together as they enjoy some fun games of bowling. We hope all of you can join also! In March, the annual Fundraising Dinner will be coming up. JOY encourages all of you to come as it will a very fun time and it is for a very notable cause! You can check out all of the pictures from our events at :
