As you know, we are planning to build New Jain temple along with Jain Center. Pratistha will be

in 2016, our volunteers for new Jain center have made significant progress, especially Temple

committee. Details of the progress are outlined in this newsletter. As temple committee

moves forward, we will need to make sure for enough funding.

Many of us have been very generous, and I personally like to thank you for the same. Going

forward please continue to support our project and be very generous. Take part in different

committee, volunteer for the project which interests you as per your expertise.

We need also significant donations to complete the whole project and maintain that. We have

many families and if each one makes pledge now, we will be reaching our goal very soon.

NEW TEMPLE UPDATE

Jai Jinendra,

As I mentioned in my last report, we are making very good progress towards building our new Jain Center with Shikharbandhi Jain Temple and are on target to have Pratistha Mahotsav by August 2016.

Given below are reports of sub committees highlighting our recent achievements.

Construction Committee:

Demolition Permit:

o We have successfully received the permit from the county to demolish the existing structures. We

expect to complete the demolition before Paryushan.

Architect and Civil Engineer work in USA:

o We have successfully performed and completed a design review session with nbj Architects, the

architect to whom we have awarded the contract.

o A group of 12 committee members also visited the Chinmaya Mission temple in Virginia with the

architect, as a local example of design work done by nbj Architects

o We are in the final stage of completing the design for the new Jain Center for presenting it to the

General Body. (Date of holding a special General Body meeting for this will be announced during

the Swapna Ceremony function).

Sompura Architects (Jain Temple Architects) in India:

o Detailed requirements have been established and a Request for Proposal has been sent to 7 Sompura architects in India for designing and shipping carved marble for the planned two Shikharbandhi Derasars.

If you are interested in help in any of the construction/permit activities, please contact Ashok Shah at [email protected].

Public relations (PR) Committee: We have found that our neighbors are very generous to welcome new members in the community; however, they are also equally concerned to know who we are and what we are planning to do. In order to spread the word about Jainism and to ensure that we do believe in community service to uplift other communities in the area and help the community in various ways, a series of events are being planned:

- We have allowed Fire Department to use our existing structures for training before we demolish

them, providing them a temporary facility to conduct training.

- A meeting has been scheduled with the neighbors to brief them about the demolition taking place.

- A plan is laid out to educate our neighbors about the JSMW and Jainism:

o We plan to invite some neighbors and key community leaders for the Swapna ceremony

function.

o We are planning to visit neighbors on the occasion of Diwali and offer them a basket of

sweets.

o We are planning to decorate our area with lights on the occasion of Christmas.

o We are planning to invite neighbors during our on-site Bhoomi Pojan program on 13

September

o We are planning to invite neighbors during Thanksgiving and explain them our way of

celebrating Thanksgiving, i.e., performing an Ayambil and educate them about Jain values

of non-violence, charity, etc.

If you are interested to help in any of the PR related activities, please contact Dr. Sushil Jain @ [email protected]. Fund Raising Committee : Dr. Gitaben Shah (Chairperson of the Board of Trustees) has accepted the responsibility to lead the fundraising activities. She is in the process of establishing a strategic plan to execute and implement the fundraising process including policies and procedures. As you can read from above, we are all working hard towards achieving our goal of completing this project on schedule. If you wish to know of other/more details, have any questions, or would like to offer your voluntary service, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] .

Thanks and regards,

Arvind Shah, Temple Committee Chair

PATHSHALA UPDATE

We have had another very busy and successful 2013-14 pathshala year. We concluded with an annual picnic on the last day of pathshala. There was moon bounce, cotton candies, popcorns and many more fun activities. Thanks to our PTA Mom's and volunteers who worked hard to make this a fun and memorable event.

It's hard to believe but it's time for the beginning of a new pathshala year. Pathshala Year 2014-15 will begin from September 21, 2014 for children age 3 to 10th graders. It will be held on 1st and 3rd Sunday of every month (with a few exceptions) from Sep through Jun between 10:15 AM and 12:15 PM totaling 20 classes. Our Pathshala curriculum consists of 8 levels. Each student spends a minimum of 2 years in a class except Nursery, Pre-alpha and Class G which is for 1 year each. In addition to Pathshala classes, we conduct Hindi and Gujarati language classes on Pathshala days from 9:15AM to 10:15AM. Adult classes are also conducted by Dr. Atul Shah & Pravinbhai Dand on Pathshala days between 10:30AM and 12:30PM.

Please participate and take advantage of these opportunities.

Pathshala Registration 2014-15

Registration for Pathshala year 2014-15 has already begun. We encourage all members to enroll their children as soon as possible and take advantage of this unique opportunity of teaching our religion and Jain Way of Life to our children. Please fill out the form located on our website at http://www.jainsocietydc.com/Pathshala.asp. There is a lot more information about Pathshala class locations, lunch sponsorship details & guidelines, class details, teacher’s contact & curriculum. We encourage you to visit our website and spread the word to anyone who would like to register.

JSMW Essay Competition 2014

As we work through Pathshala to provide our youth a foundation of Jain Principles, we recognize that only the students themselves can be true masters of their soul. With that in mind, JSMW Pathshala for the first time has hosted an essay competition to encourage our Pathshala students to think about how Jain Principles are actually applicable in their daily lives. Our Pathshala teacher, Monica Shah had taken a lead on this project and we received a good response.

Hats off to all the kids who participated!!! You all have done an amazing job of writing thought provocative and truly inspirational essays.

The winners of this contest will be announced during Paryushan 2014. If any of you are interested in sponsoring the prizes, please contact [email protected]

Lastly, we appreciate your participation in all the Pathshala activities. We wish you continue to do so and together we can learn and teach the Jain Way of Life.

Please feel free to contact Megha Doshi at [email protected] for any questions/suggestions.
