MCWS Youth Group trip to Gleaners Food Bank

The MCWS Youth Group took a trip Gleaners Food Bank in Pontiac, MI this past month and it was an

amazing volunteer trip alhamdulillah! Gleaners headquarters is in Detroit and provides food to 534 partner

soup kitchens, food pantries, shelters and other agencies throughout southeastern Michigan. Gleaners collects

nearly 39 million pounds of food a year and distributes 89,000 meals each day including providing nourishing

food and nutrition education to 84,700 children a year. The MCWS girls and boys youth committees gathered

at the food bank and were able to help with this amazing distribution by sorting and packaging food for the

needy in the surrounding areas while at the same time having fun and learning how to give back.

Volunteering teaches us to be humble and to appreciate all the blessings that we have in this life. Giv-

ing our time for the needy is an integral part of our religion and one that we must seek after. Safwan ibn Salim

related that the Prophet said: Anyone who looks after and works for a widow and a poor person is like a warri-

or fighting for Allah’s cause, or like a person who fasts during the day and prays all night. (Bukhari)

The youth committee plans to continue volunteering continuously with Gleaners over the next couple

of months as well as giving our time to other avenues in the future inshallah. The next date is set for Sat. Feb-

ruary 18th and you can register and the link below which is also posted on mcws.org! Don't miss out on these

opportunities inshallah :)! The event is open to High School and College aged students.
