Brother James Garfield was Initiated: November 19, 1861, Magnolia Lodge, N0 20, Columbus, Ohio. Owing to Civil War duties, Brother Garfield did not receive the Third Degree until November 22, 1864 in Columbus Lodge N0 30, Columbus, Ohio. On October 10, 1866, he affiliated with Garrettsville Lodge N0 246, Garrettsville, Ohio, serving as its Chaplain in 1868-1869. Brother Garfield then became a Charter Member of Pentalpha Lodge N0 23 of Washington, D.C. on May 4, 1869; in fact, he was one of the Petitioners for the Lodge Charter. The youngest of five children born on a poor farm on the outskirts of Cleveland, Ohio, Garfield is perhaps the poorest man ever to have become President. Supporting himself as a part-time teacher, a carpenter, and even a janitor through college, he was an idealistic young man who identified with the antislavery tenets of the new Republican Party. After graduating from Williams College, Garfield studied law on his own and passed the Ohio bar exams in 1861 before throwing himself into politics and winning a seat in the Ohio legislature. Garfield was a loyal Unionist who built a reputation as a Civil War hero that earned him a seat in the House of Representatives without ever having campaigned. During Garfield's congressional terms, debates raged between legislators who demanded that all U.S. money be backed by gold and the "Silverites" and "Greenbackers," who wanted to issue paper currency and coin silver more freely in an attempt to alleviate pressing debts, especially those of struggling farmers. Garfield advocated hard money policies backed by gold, making him a favorite with eastern "Gold Bug" Republicans. He opposed cooperative farm programs such as those supported by the Grange, an agrarian organization; labor unions; the eight-hour workday; and federally funded relief projects. In the election of 1880, the Republican ticket looked like it would boil down to a fight between former President Ulysses S. Grant and the more moderate James G. Blaine. Garfield surprised everyone, however, by earning an ever-increasing number of votes in the convention balloting. He won the presidential nomination and eventually the election against Democrat Winfield S. Hancock, a Union general who made his mark at Gettysburg. The election was the closest on record. Garfield served as President too briefly for him to have left much of an impact. Still, his legacy is far more ambiguous than most people realize.. For his reputation, it might have been just as well that he died when he did. He died in the prime of his life, still politically untested. The times did not demand a President in the heroic mold, and Garfield could therefore be remembered as a martyr above all else, as one who truly gave his life for his nation. Murdered within months of his inauguration, Garfield served as President too briefly for him to have left much of an impact. Still, his legacy is far more ambiguous than most people realize He might have advanced the cause of civil rights, but without again stationing federal troops in the South, his options were limited. He died in the prime of his life, still politically untested. The times did not demand a President in the heroic mold, and Garfield could therefore be remembered as a martyr above all else, as one who truly gave his life for his nation. Since Garfield was struck down four months into his term, historians can only speculate as to what his presidency might have been like. Garfield's greatest legacy was the impact of his death on moving the nation to reform government patronage. JAMES ABRAM GARFIELD ~ 20 TH PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES ~ JULY 2 - SEPTEMBER 19,1881

I challenge you to say this to yourself today, and every morning when you first wake up: “I’m letting go of all the negative feelings, fears and thoughts from yesterday. I have no room for them! I will focus only on positive thoughts and resolutions today.” And then practice what you preach. It will gradually make a difference in your life, guaranteed. Because truthfully, there is so much about your fate that you can’t control, it makes no sense to neglect all the things you CAN control. You can decide how you spend your time, whom you socialize with, whom you share your life, money and energy with. You can pick your words and the tone of voice in which you speak to others. You can select what you will eat, read and study every day. You can choose how you’re going to respond to

unfortunate situations when they arise, and whether you will see them as curses or opportunities for growth… And most importantly, you can choose your thoughts, which dictate pretty much everything else. Train your mind to see the good in everything. Positivity is a choice. The happiness of your life depends on the quality of your thoughts. In other words, you are what you think. You can’t change

anything if you can’t change your thinking.

Here are some thoughts it’s time to change:

“My dreams and goals can wait.”

Live a life you are proud of. In the end, your greatest fear should not be of failure, but of succeeding at things that don’t matter to you.

We never tell ourselves that we will never live our dreams. Instead we just keep talking about how we will start living our dreams

tomorrow.

“I don’t have time.”

Bottom line: “I don’t have time,” is really just another, perhaps politer, or perhaps naive, way of saying, “It’s not that important to me.” “I’m not talented enough.”

Learn the value of work and practice – just the repeated concerted effort to get better at things. Forget the notions of talent and genius. I can hear you thinking, “Oh, these other people, they just have something that I don’t have.” When really, they are just people who

work and practice more. Understand this. Work and practice are the keys to anything you want to do.

If you want to play the guitar – anybody can learn to play the guitar – you can be good at it. Maybe you won’t be Jimi Hendrix, but you could be really good. You can be good enough to write good songs or make music with others or whatever. There’s no such thing as

not having enough talent to get to that level. Because persistence is talent, really. Just sticking with it. Talent is not stopping.

“I can’t forgive.”

Some say “forgive and forget.” Others say “forgive, but never forget.” No matter which path you choose, the act of forgiving is the first step. Learn from the past and let go enough to move forward with your life. People and situations are different today. Do not cling to a limited, disconnected, negative image of a person or time in the past. If you choose not to forget, make sure you're only keeping the

lessons learned, not the negativity. See your life right now. Your relationships and circumstances are always alive and changing.

“My heart has been broken too many times to take new risks.”

Sometimes it takes a heartbreak or a major let-down to shake us awake and help us see we are worth so much more than we are settling for. Will letting go be hard? Sure, but not nearly as hard as holding on to something that wasn’t real. You have to put your

heart out there. Because the emotions that can break your heart are oftentimes the very ones that heal it and help it grow.

My Philosophy on being a Member

I am a member… … of Sun City Lodge #72. … of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Arizona. … of the Freemason fraternity around the world.

… to all my brother Freemasons ‘whithersoever dispersed around the globe.’

As a member…I will do more than belong, I will participate.

Participation is much more than attendance, it is adding value where and how I can each day.

As a member… I will do more than care, I will help.

It is important to offer my help whenever and however I can so that all members can flourish.

As a member… I will do more than believe, I will practice.

It is not enough to believe in the principles and teachings of Freemasonry; I must practice them in my daily life.

As a member…I will do more than be fair, I will be kind.

I will, kindly, listen to my brother’s woes and assist him where I can.

As a member… will do more than forgive, I will love.

If I feel I have been done wrong, I will clarify what was meant, and forgive my brother and love my brother, understanding where

he is in his life’s journey.

As a member… I will do more than earn, I will enrich.

It is not enough to seek financial riches in my life; I must enrich the lives of others through a personal investment of my time and

effort.

As a member…I will do more than teach, I will serve.

It is my responsibility to pass on the teachings of Freemasonry and to serve my newly obligated brothers, so that they, too, can

pass on the teachings.

As a member…I will do more than live, I will grow.

I will use the teachings of Freemasonry to help me become a better man and to grow as an individual.

As a member…I will do more than be friendly, I will be a friend.

I will be a friend and assist my brothers, when and where I can.

As a member…I will do more than just pay my dues, I will be an active member. As an active member, I will purposely attend the meetings and invest time in the needs of the lodge and the lives of my brothers.

As we demonstrate the goodness of Freemasonry to each other and the world.

My Final Thoughts:

“I believe we should all have a Member Philosophy. Who are you as a Member, and as a Member how will you enrich your life

and the lives of others?” Note: Original author of the ‘As a Member’ is unknown.

Throw away all ambition beyond that of doing the days work well. The traveler on the road to success live in the present, heedless of taking thought for the marrow. Live neither in the past nor the future, but let each day's work absorb your entire energies, and satisfy your widest ambition. ~ Brother William Osler

The truth is like a balloon and a lie is like a pin, once you pierce the balloon with the pin the balloon, like the truth, becomes worthless. ~ Unknown

Freemasonry is "veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols" because these are the surest way by which moral and ethical truths may be taught. It is not only with the brain and with the mind that the initiate must take Freemasonry but also with the heart. Brother ~ C. H. Claudy

Since the late 1980’s, the chapel has also featured in speculative theories concerning a connection of Freemasonry, the Knights Templar, and the Holy Grail. Numerous books were published after 2003 to cater to the popular interest in supposed connections between Rosslyn Chapel, Freemasonry, the Templars and the Holy Grail. The chapel, built 150 years after the dissolution of the Knights Templar, supposedly has many Templar symbols, such as the "Two riders on a single horse" that appear on the Seal of the Knights Templar. William Sinclair 3RD Earl of Orkney, Baron of Roslin and 1ST Earl of Caithness, claimed by novelists to be a hereditary Grand Master of the Scottish Stonemasons, built Rosslyn Chapel. A later William Sinclair of Roslin became the first

Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Scotland.

Was founded in 1446 as a place of worship and services continue to be held here weekly. The Chapel has also been a popular destination for visitors for generations. By the late 18TH century, it was starting to appear on itineraries and its profile greatly increased after the publication of Dan Brown’s novel, The Da Vinci Code, in 2003, and the subsequent film. Rosslyn Chapel Trust

was established in 1995 to care for the Chapel and oversee its conservation and public access.

Club in all the months the Club was dark. All members, ladies and guests were welcome and encouraged to attend these events. It remains to be seen whether these luncheons will again be held next summer. The important activity now is the regular breakfast meetings which will be held at the Tivoli Gardens on the second Friday of each month from October 9th through May 13, 2016.Our second annual Pancake Breakfast is tentatively scheduled in February, 2016. At this time, nothing is etched in stone, but it is never too soon to make your plans so you will be available to help with this fun/fund raiser. Perhaps the most important activity that we can all do is selling tickets so we can have more attendees than at our first Pancake Breakfast. It is going to be up to each of us members and you do not even have to be a sound physical specimen to do this important work. Like in some of the other ‘chores’ our ladies can assist in making this event very successful. They attend many meetings and other activities where the men do not so they have an excellent place to sell individual as well as groups of tickets. All Master Masons are invited and encouraged to attend any of our regular meetings on the second Fridays of the months of October through May as well as our social events where the ladies and guests are always welcome and encouraged to attend... The next scheduled social event will be our Christmas/Holiday luncheon on December 7TH at the Briarwood Country Club where we always enjoy great food, fun and fellowship as all High

Twelvians like to enjoy. Santa Claus sometimes has sent an elf by with a treat for each of us.

Reminders – Mark your calendars ! Don’t miss any meeting or event ! October 9, 2015- 8:00 at Tivoli Gardens Breakfast Meeting and our speaker will be Jesse Ramirez from his Valley View Community Food Bank.

Remember you can still participate with you donations to the Wolcott Foundation any day of the year and join our Brothers attending the Sun City Lodge or any Lodge. As you know, any Lodge can be a great location to find a new High Twelvians for our

club.

Having lived in the Midwest most of my life and certainly all my summers, I am having the new experience of Arizona “dry” hea t. Because I have just returned from Nebraska I can easily remember the “moist” heat of July so I feel qualified to compare “dry” heat and “moist” heat. They are both HOT. So it is my hope that it will have cooled down somewhat by the time Daughters of the Ni le meet again on Monday, October 5th. This will be a regular meeting beginning with a business meeting at 10:30 followed by our usual delicious carry-in lunch. We hope to see many of you there as we will need to work on plans for the Official Visit of our Queen in November. See you there!

Gatherings of the Past Masters Fellowship (PMF) are at the Sun City Masonic Center in the Jackson

Room. We meet at 8:30 AM for coffee and refreshments. Past Masters should note their calendar for

Tuesday, 08 September 2015 for the next gathering of the PMF. The September meeting will focus

on the development of a Seekers Group to assist members of Sun City Lodge seeking assistance

with Masonic knowledge, degree ritual, and education. There will also be an opportunity to discuss

the upcoming fundraising PMF sponsored Pizza Night in October. Note that the PMF gatherings are

open to all members of Sun City Lodge who have served in the East, regardless of the location of the

Lodge. For further information, contact

Brethren, at this time we have 235 members. We have one affiliate waiting for a demit: Jan Milo Hoskins but we have contacted Grand Lodge and finally have the process started. We still have 21 who owe dues. I think we are doing very well. Our average age is 70.27. In just over a

year I will be on the upside of this number. Do good unto all.

Issues of the Trestleboard are available to individual e-mail accounts electronically. The advantage of the electronic release is that

the recipient will be receiving the Trestleboard at the time it is sent to the printer, which is a week or more before the end of the

Sun City N066 is gearing up for a terrific year. The officers are eager to support the fundraisers of our Worthy Matron Sister Kathleen Lehman and Worthy Patron Brother John Munster. The Columbus Day Spaghetti dinner (ala George), will be Saturday, October 10th. This is one of our best attended functions. The cost is $10.00 per ticket in advance or $15.00 at the door. It is all-you-can-eat, along with fun, friends, and fellowship, to enjoy together. Plus bring your own beer or wine. Could you ask for anything more? Dinner starts at 5:00 P.M. Please make your reservations early. Call Sandy Munster at (623) 466-7039 to reserve a table and bring all your friends. A good opportunity to intro-duce people to Eastern Star. Our breakfasts at the Royal Cafe, held on the second Tues-day of the month at 9:00 A.M., are so well attended that we will be giving a good donation to the food bank this year. Mark your calendars for August 11 and September 8 to partici-pate in these fun get-together. The calling cards for the troops for Christmas have been so successful that the Worthy Matron and Worthy Patron want to do it again We are looking forward to the Initiation of a new member, who will be initiated at this session of the Grand

Chapter. How very special this will be for her and for us! Please help us make her feel welcome. Please send your dues, this fall, to our new secretary, Sister Kay Shikaly, PGM, at 10330 W. Thunderbird Blvd. #A233, C Sun City, Arizona 85351. S (623)217-9516. Take a look at our very own web site: Suncity66.webs.com Respectfully submitted Sandy Munster PM
