I would like to welcome you to the 2016-17 school year at James Howard Monroe Middle School. We are excited about starting the year and we are looking forward to a terrific year with all our students, staff and families. We would like to welcome some new staff members to Monroe this year.

This year I will be continuing to communicate important information, events and suc-cesses through our monthly newsletter as well as the Blackboard Connect email and phone system. Beginning this year District 200 will have the capability of sending text messages to parents through Blackboard Connect. On August 1st Blackboard Connect should have sent an initial text message to all parents who have their cell phone num-ber in ParentVue letting them know this option is now available. I will also continue to post fun and interesting things happening at school through Facebook and Twitter. I will use these two social media tools as an avenue to show our parents all the great things that are happening at Monroe. These will not be taking the place of any of the current communication tools. Please take a minute and follow us. Monroe Middle School - School Procedures
ATTENDANCE /EARLY DISMIS-
SAL:
If your student is absent, please call the attendance office 630-682-2285 and then press 2 before 8:00 a.m. or call 630-682-2290 to report the ab-sence. When a student needs to be dismissed early from school for a doc-tor's appointment, orthodontist ap-pointment, etc., please call the attend-ance office before 8:00 a.m., or you may send a note with your student to be brought to the office before school stating the reason and the time you would like the student dismissed. The student will then receive a pass to give to his/her teacher indicating the appro-priate dismissal time. The person pick-ing up the student needs to come into school and sign the student out at the main office. (Please do not leave attendance or early dismissal messages on the main office voice
mail.)
VISITORS: Any visitors to the school must check into the office before going elsewhere in the building. Parents should not go to a class without checking into the
office first.
HOMEWORK:
Homework assignments may only be requested on the third day of an absence. Please call before 9:00 a.m. so teachers have time to prepare as-signments and get them to the office
by the end of the day.
MEDICATION:
Parents are urged to adjust a student's medication schedule so that medication may be given under parent supervision. If it be-comes necessary for a student to take any form of medication at school, a signed note from the parent and the physician must ac-company the medication (Medication Permission Sheet) and given to the nurse's office. All medication must be in a prescrip-tion container and kept in and distributed through the nurse's office. Copies of the Medication Permission Sheet are available in the office. If there is a change in medication, it is the responsibility of the parent to notify the nurse's office. *Please note: The school cannot administer any medication (including over-the-counter medication) without the above permission
sheet.
***A complete explanation and description of Monroe’s operational procedures can be found in your students 2016-2017 student

Monroe Intramurals are sports related activities that are set up to encourage students to get involved in school pro-grams. They are set up to help develop skills, build self-esteem, enhance school spirit, teach sportsmanship and en-courage fun. It is our intention to divide the students by skill and/or grade level when appropriate. This program is an
extension of our Interscholastic Sports and our Physical Education classes.
The following is a list of the intramural sports offered and the starting dates:
Attention 6th grade Monroe Middle School Boys :
Like last year, the boy’s PE locker-room will have a padlock locker system. This system requires ALL new male students and 6th grade male students to purchase a Monroe Middle School approved pad master-lock to be used on their locker in the PE locker-room. This lock is specifically designed to be used in the locker-room only: it has its own designated color, an individual serial number specific to the person it was issued to, has a rear key security entry point, and is yours to keep upon leaving Monroe Middle School. Returning male students must bring back their purchased
lock from last year or purchase a new one for this year. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Boyd.
The cost is $6.00 Cash and checks accepted
