Vocal Arts 2018 Information and Registration Form James Madison University School of Music, Harrisonburg, Virginia 880 South Main Street, Harrisonburg, VA 22807 JMU Vocal Arts Camp (Junior) July 23 - July 28, 2018 Under the direction of the Choral Area at James Madison University, talented young singers will have the opportunity to share in a weeklong summer experience of choral singing! In addition to daily rehearsals, movement classes and group social activities, campers receive daily Kodály-based classes. Joan Kenney, award-winning noted music educator, will direct our Junior Camp with musicianship classes also being taught by Joy Anderson, a national leader in Kodály music instruction. Both faculty and students from the Choral Music Education Area at JMU support and teach in this program. James Madison University is located in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley in the center of Harrisonburg, VA and is conveniently located just off Interstate 81. Camp activities will make use of several JMU facilities and the Forbes Center for the Performing Arts Concert Hall. About Our Staff: JOAN M. KENNEY earned a Bachelor of Music Education from James Madison University in 1983. She received her vocal training under Dr. Gordon Olson, Ms. Sharon Christman and Dr. In Dal Choi. She is in her thirty-second year of public school music education beginning in Rockingham County, Virginia in 1985 and presently as the Music Specialist for Edward G. Clymore Elementary School in Augusta County, Virginia. Mrs. Kenney has been recognized for her educational contributions including the James Madison University Outstanding Cooperating Teacher for 2016, Virginia Music Educator Outstanding General Music Educator for 2014-15 and the VFW Teacher of the Year District and Regional Winner for 2016, 2017 . She has served as a guest conductor for Augusta County Elementary Honors Choir conductor in 2007, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and for Shenandoah County Honors Choir in 2011. In 2014, Mrs. Kenney collaborated with Blue Ridge Community College on a school and community music project.Mrs. Kenney has mentored student teachers as clinical faculty with the MidValley Consortium for Teacher Education since 1990. She has trained music professionals by presenting at VMEA conferences, received numerous grants from Valley Alliance for Education and from VEMEA for a District V teacher inservice and as a guest presenter at James Madison University and Rockingham County. In addition to her teaching career, Joan has served as the Director of Music for Bridgewater United Methodist Church since 1979. Her volunteer work includes the Project Healing Waters Mossy Creek Fly Fishing Invitational. Joan lives in Bridgewater, Virginia with her husband Dennis and enjoys spending time with her family. JOY ANDERSON teaches K-5 music and elementary choir at Eastern Mennonite School in Harrisonburg, VA, and is the Assistant Director of the acclaimed Shenandoah Valley Children's Choir, where, among other duties, she teaches the Music Explorers classes for 5-9 year olds. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the University of Richmond, VA., a Master of Music in Music Education and Level I Orff certification from

Her level III instruction through Capital University was at the Kodály Institute in Kecskemet, Hungary. A frequent guest conductor and clinician for local and regional school systems and music educator organizations, Mrs. Anderson has taught in Kodály courses at James Madison University, the University of New Mexico, and Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, TX, and currently co-coordinates the JMU Kodály course.

Tuition for Campers:

Tuition includes all music instruction, materials, snacks and a camp T-shirt. Full Tuition: $90.00 (4/15 – 7/15) Late Registration: $110.00 (7/15 - 7/23)

Camp Schedule - general: The camp will begin on Monday July 23, 2018. The camp schedule is daily from 9:30 am – 12:00 pm. Students will participate in choral rehearsals, musicianship classes and recreational activities. Vocal Arts Camp concludes with an 11:00 am concert on Saturday July 24, 2018.
