Casey, Q.C. Jim Casey is a partner at Field LLP working in the Firm’s Edmonton office. Jim’s primary areas of practice are professional regulation, administrative law, and labour and employment law. Jim is the former head of the firm’s Edmonton Labour and Employment Group and its Professional Regulatory Group and now serves as the Managing Partner for Field. He has appeared before all levels of Court in Alberta and numerous administrative tribunals. Jim has also appeared before the Supreme Court of Canada in a major case involving the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Jim acts as legal counsel for numerous professional organizations providing advice in all areas of professional regulation including legislation, discipline, scope of practice and government relations. Jim has been retained by both provincial and federal government agencies to provide advice on professional regulation issues, including the development of legislation. He conducts training seminars on professional regulation issues for professions. Jim also provides representations and strategic advice in all labour and employment matters including labour arbitrations, employment contracts, employee dismissals and human rights issues. Jim serves as a part-time Vice-Chair of the Labour Relations Board. He is a frequent speaker to professional, business and community groups and has co-chaired conferences on professional regulation in Toronto, Vancouver and Halifax. Jim is the author of numerous publications including two books “The Regulation of Professions in Canada” and “A Guide to the Health Professions Act.” He is also the editor of the text “Remedies in Labour, Employment, and Human Rights Law.” Jim has taught Labour Law in the Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta. Jim has been named as a leading lawyer by Lexpert in the areas of labour relations and employment law and was included in the inaugural edition of “Best Lawyers in Canada” in the areas of labour and employment law and alternative dispute resolution. The Tek-9 Dance Band Since 1999 TEK-9 has become one of Winnipeg’s Hottest Show Bands. A popular contemporary and retro club music dance band, consisting of 3 lead vocalists and 5 musicians enables the band to have a diverse repertoire. Performing songs of such artist as Michael Jackson, Enrique, ABBA, The Bee Gees, Ricky Martin, Gloria Gaynor, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Madonna and many more, has made TEK-9 one of the most popular party bands in the city. Robin Chestnut Two time Canadian Juggling Champion Robin Chestnut has been wowing audiences, and making them laugh all at the same time for more than 20 years. Robin’s skills and affable sense of humour have taken him from cruise ships in the Bahamas to capital of Saudi Arabia, to Shanghai, China, and all over Canada, just for following what he loved to do. His humorous discourse on goal achievement takes a light-hearted look at the self-improvement industry. This presentation will provide an overview of trends with respect to professional competence programs for professionals. Questions to be examined include: Are the “old ways” of professional development good enough any more? What are current governmental and societal expectations? Should professional competence programs be mandatory? What is the role of regulators such as APEGM? How are the trends affecting regulators such as APEGM? Does the trend of “regulating the regulators” pose a risk if regulators do not act?

APEGM Council has been tracking national trends in Continuing Competency and formed a CPD Task Group to guide the membership with respect to a new Professional Development Program. The system, which will be accessed through APEGM’s secure portal, will be demonstrated and its accompanying guideline will be discussed.
