James 2:14 What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? 15 If a

brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things

needed for the body, what good is that? 17 So also faith by itself, if it

does not have works, is dead.

Page 5: James Teaches Faith and Works James 2:14-26

John 6:29 Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you

believe in him whom he has sent.”

REFLECTION 12: Faith works

Matthew 12:33 “Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad, for the tree is known by its fruit.”

REFLECTION 12: Faith works

James 3:11 Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water? 12 Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a

grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water.

REFLECTION 12: Faith works

Matthew 5:40 And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. 41 And if

anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. 42 Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would

borrow from you.

REFLECTION 12: Faith works

1 John 3:17 But if anyone has the

world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart

against him, how does God’s love abide in him? 18 Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in

deed and in truth. 19 By this we shall know that we

are of the truth and reassure our heart before him;

Page 11: James Teaches Faith and Works James 2:14-26

REFLECTION 12: Faith works

James 4:17 So whoever knows the right

thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.

Page 12: James Teaches Faith and Works James 2:14-26

REFLECTION 12: Faith works

James 2:18 But someone will say, “You

have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from

your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.19 You believe

that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!

REFLECTION 12: Faith works

Matthew 7:21 “Not everyone who says to

me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father

who is in heaven.”

REFLECTION 12: Faith works

“Hell will be full of people who are

monotheistic, Trinitarian, orthodox, and religious!”

Pastor Kent Hughes

REFLECTION 12: Faith works

Philippians 2:12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so

now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence,

work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and

to work for his good pleasure.

Page 16: James Teaches Faith and Works James 2:14-26

REFLECTION 12: Faith works

Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have

been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in

Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we

should walk in them.

Page 17: James Teaches Faith and Works James 2:14-26

REFLECTION 12: Faith works

James 2:20 Do you want to be shown, you foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by

works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar? 22 You see that

faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works; 23 and the Scripture was

fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”—and he was called a friend of God. 24 You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.

Page 18: James Teaches Faith and Works James 2:14-26

REFLECTION 12: Faith works

“James would say we are justified by faith alone, but not by faith

which is alone!” Pastor Kent Hughes

REFLECTION 12: Faith works

James 2:25 And in the same way was not also Rahab the prostitute justified by works when she

received the messengers and sent them out by another way?

REFLECTION 12: Faith works

Joshua 2:9b  “I know that the LORD has given you the land, and that the

fear of you has fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land

melt away before you. 10 For we have heard how the LORD dried up

the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, … 11 And as soon as we heard it,

our hearts melted, and there was no spirit left in any man because of you, for the LORD your God, he is God in the heavens above and

on the earth beneath.”

Page 21: James Teaches Faith and Works James 2:14-26

REFLECTION 12: Faith works

Hebrews 11:31 By faith Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who were disobedient,

because she had given a friendly welcome to the spies.

Page 22: James Teaches Faith and Works James 2:14-26

REFLECTION 12: Faith works

James 2:26 For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith

apart from works is dead.

REFLECTION 12: Faith works

“Oh, it is a living, busy, active, mighty thing this faith; and so it is

impossible for it not to do good works incessantly. It does not ask whether there are good works to

do, but before the question rises it has already done them, and is

always at the doing of them. He who does not these works is a

faithless man.” Martin Luther
