The Jamestown Public School does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, or handicap in its educational program/activities and employment policies/practices. The JHS Counseling staff does not make or have input as to the winners of these scholarships. It is our position to remain neutral and unbiased and provide assistance to all students in obtaining scholarship information. The information in this booklet is based on what we know from the past year. There may be additions or deletions to these listed scholarships or contests. We will make announcements regarding changes.

Here are some suggestions to help you prepare for the future and particularly for college or vocational training. Discuss your plans with your parents, teachers, and counselors. 1.

Achievement, abilities, interests and ambitions are important factors to be evaluated in setting your goals. Initiative, responsibility and personality will determine your degree of success. (Discuss this with your counselor.)

2.

Explore the many occupational fields. Evaluate this information as it relates to your self–evaluation. Don't select an occupational field or goal just because "Uncle Charlie" or "Aunt Jane" is successful or thinks it is for you.

3.

Start planning your future now. Get some experiences in the various occupations which interest you. Find out all you can about these occupations. Talk to people actually doing the work in which you are interested. For instance, talk to your teachers about contacting people in careers that appeal to you.

4.

Investigate the schools which offer training in the field of your choice. Talk to people who have attended these institutions if possible. If you don't know such a person, ask your counselor and he/she will arrange for you to meet someone following the career in which you are interested. Find out the cost of your proposed course and what scholarships the school you selected offers. Learn about projected demands for employment in the field you select.

5.

Your teachers can help you learn good study habits for various subjects. Work hard to constantly improve your study habits. You'll be glad you did.

Page 5: Jamestown High School Students' · 2013. 9. 5. · 4. The College Cost Book 5. Choices Recognition opportunity for superior academic students. Four JHS students may be represented

6. Grades of "B" or better are called "recommended" grades. You must have recommended grades to be eligible for most scholarships. Good grades are important. If you are not getting recommended grades, talk to your teacher about your difficulty. Make frequent visits to your public library.

7.

Develop hobbies and participate in school, community and church activities. Broaden your field of interest through reading and contacts with people.

8.

Parents and students should consider the combination of savings, scholarships, loans and part–time student jobs when planning the financing of higher education. (Do not secure your information from old publications.)

9.

A few degree–granting institutions require applicants to take admission examinations of some kind. Secure information on these tests from the Admissions Office of the university/college you plan to attend.

10.

Familiarize yourself with the various awards for which you may qualify and their deadlines. Participation at times is very limited, and you certainly won't be able to win unless you submit your entry. Remember to ask the admissions counselor at the post–secondary school you plan to attend about college–sponsored scholarships. Get references, transcripts and other material in order long before the deadline. When applying for scholarships, type your application. Watch for spelling errors and sentence fragments. Follow requirements exactly.
