From the President and the Executive Director

In October 2017, the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, Inc., celebrated the victorious completion of the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown Campaign for Support. The Campaign, which culminated on July 31, 2017, exceed-ed its $15 million goal to raise almost $17 million in private support to complement the Commonwealth of Virgin-ia’s public investment in the new museum.

Today the result of that public-private partnership is the most educational and engaging museum imaginable in one of the most significant locations in our nation’s fight for independence. Many people have been instrumental in this success:

Ben Dendy, chairman emeritus of the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation Board of Trustees,

Sue Gerdelman, the immediate past president of the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, Inc., Board of Directors,

and Campaign co-chairs Mari Ann and Charlie Banks, whose passion for preserving the stories of the American Revolution inspired others to participate in the Campaign for Support.

The generosity of our donors is humbling. Thanks to the leadership and philanthropy of numerous individuals, foundations, and corporations, this new museum tells the stories of the men and women, the ordinary people living in extraordinary times, on whose shoulders our nation stands. Thanks to you, the Foundation will continue in our role as a leader in history education as we launch educational initiatives that engage our youth and prepare them to be future leaders.

Each of you leaves a momentous legacy for all of our nation’s citizens—thank you.

The American Revolution Museum at Yorktown Campaign for Support paralleled the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation’s master plan to transform the Yorktown Victory Center into the new American Revolution Museum at Yorktown. Planning, building and exhibit construction, and renovations to the site were funded by the Com-monwealth of Virginia. Major components of the project totaled approximately $50 million. The comprehensive Campaign, led by Co-chairs Charlie and Mari Ann Banks, represented the private fundraising effort to complement the Commonwealth of Virginia’s public investment in the new museum.

The museum’s first gallery showcases a coronation portrait of King George III and a rare portrait of Ayuba Suleiman Diallo. Later, visitors encounter a rare July 1776 broadside of the Declaration of Independence. As visitors near the galler-ies’ end, they are greeted by a 19th-century life-size statue of George Washington formerly exhibited at the U.S. Capitol.

Legacies of the Campaign

Gallery Exhibits: $6.6 million raised

Within a brand-new facility, the Foundation’s educational mission is being delivered more effectively and dramati-cally than ever before at the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown. The American Revolution Museum at York-town Campaign for Support raised significant support from the private sector for the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown’s gallery exhibits and outdoor exhibits, the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation’s educational resources, and the Annual Fund.

Liberty Fever, the new museum’s award-winning intro-ductory film, sets the stage for the visitor experience and features the stories of five people who lived during the American Revolution. Through these personal accounts, guests watch the spread of “liberty fever” unfold before them. The production of Liberty Fever was made possible with private gifts and grants made to the Campaign for Support.

The galleries, which debuted to the public in October 2016, lead visitors through a visual narrative of the American Revolution using five major themes, where they encounter commonplace and iconic objects — re-markable survivors from the era of our nation’s birth.

A total of 185 artifacts were added to the museum’s collection since July 2010. Thanks to private gifts to the Campaign for Support, these period artifacts are the tangible pieces of our past that endure for generations.

Technology has played an increasingly important role in the museum education arena. In response to new ex-pectations by the public and underwritten by gifts and grants to the Campaign for Support, technology is in-corporated throughout the galleries. From films shown in immersive settings to interactive touch-screens that engage visitors young and old, these elements help tell the dramatic and complex story of the American Revolution.

Outdoor Exhibits: $432,100 raisedThe outdoor exhibits are an important component of the new American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, complementing the stories explored within the galleries and reinforcing concepts and themes that visitors first encounter there.

Completed in March 2017, the Continental Army encampment and Revolution-era farm are the perfect setting for interactive educational programs that engage visitors in the choices and consequences of what was lived, lost, and gained during the American Revolution.

Major new features of the Continental Army encamp-ment include a drill field where visitors can participate in tactical demonstrations and an artillery amphithe-ater—appearing as a redoubt from the outside—to accommodate artillery presentations. Private funding

helped the Foundation produce reproduction military tents of various sizes and add two new guns to the artillery and firing station, as well as provide daily demonstrations for visitors and schoolchildren.

The Revolution-era farm evokes the world of the 18th-century family of Edward Moss (c. 1757–1786), whose life is well documented in York County, Virginia, records. The chronicle of Edward Moss and his family offers a frame of reference for farm and domestic life and for exploring dynamic stories about choosing sides, the changing role of women during the war, and the effects of war on families. Private support to the Campaign complemented public funds to construct historical structures, including a new farm house and kitchen, tobacco barn, tool shed, and an enslaved persons’ quarters.

Educational Resources: $1.4 million raisedOur educational mission continues to motivate us to meet the need for greater public education about the early history, settlement, and development of the United States. With a dedication to programs that educate our youth, the Foundation is the largest provider of structured museum education programs in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Thanks to our public and private partners, the Foundation is reaching students at our museums and in their classrooms. Thanks to the support of Campaign donors, we are opening the doors of Jamestown Settlement and the Ameri-can Revolution Museum at Yorktown to the nation and the world.

Planning is currently underway for an online learning center featuring innovative, technology-based education applications,

as well as new curriculum materials, primary resources, lesson plans, short videos, and period images related to the Revolution

and early government for students, teachers, and families.

In 2018, the Foundation will host an inaugural youth and teacher conference at the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown. The conference will bring students and teach-ers from across Virginia to explore 18th-century ideals of civic virtue and nurture dialogue on model citizenship in the modern age. Students will be inspired to take action by developing projects to improve their commu-nities.

Through a robust special exhibitions program at both museums, the Foundation builds upon the stories told in the galleries and the living-history areas and connects in meaningful ways with new audiences. These changing exhibi-tions offer opportunities to forge partnerships with other institutions and present public programs that give guests multi-faceted experiences throughout their visit.

The American Revolution Museum at Yorktown Campaign for Support helped make possible a multiyear program of special exhibitions that launched with the June 2017 opening of “AfterWARd:The Revolutionary Veterans Who Built America.” With significant support from Altria Group, this first exhibition featured national and international loans and multimedia that connect the veterans of the Siege of Yorktown and the experiences of modern-day visitors.

Looking forward, the special exhibitions program continues in 2018 with “Blast from the Past: Artillery in the War of Independence,” which will connect visitors with a quintessential part of the Siege of Yorktown and explore ongoing advances in artillery. In 2019, “The Forgotten Soldiers” will tell the stories of African Americans during the American Revolution, tracing the paths that individuals took and their decisions to fight on both sides of the war.

“Pocahontas Imagined,” presented 400 years after this iconic historical figure’s death in 1617, explored how Pocahontas’ image and name have been used over the past centuries, across the United States and around the world. “Pocahontas Imagined” was supported by a grant from James City County.

Opening Fall 2018, “Tenacity: Women in Jamestown and Early Virginia” will feature captivating and lit-tle-known personal stories from the three cultures—

Powhatan Indian, English, and African—to illustrate roles women played in the founding years of what would eventually become the United States. The exhibition’s themes will be enhanced with a series of themed programs and special events at Jamestown Settlement throughout 2019. Early planning for this exhibit is made possible by a grant from James City County, with additional support from the 2019 Commemoration, American Evolution™.

The Mathews Legacy Society is named in honor of Nick and Mary Mathews, natives of Greece who emigrated to

the United States and earned their fortune through their restaurant Nick’s Seafood Pavilion. In 1972, Nick and Mary donated 23 acres overlooking the York River for what would become the Yorktown Victory Center and,

more than 40 years later, the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown.

Preserving Our Nation’s Story for Future GenerationsEndowment

The Mathews Legacy Society

The Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, Inc., manages endowed assets that benefit the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation’s museums and educational programs. As of June 30, 2017, these endowments amounted to $17.5 million. For fiscal years 2016 and 2017, the

endowments’ expendable earnings were used to support artifact acquisition, as well as core public and struc-tured education program areas, including the education program, outreach education, historical interpretation, and special exhibitions.

Planned gifts are an important way to grow the endowments, thus ensuring that the legacies of Jamestown and Yorktown are preserved for future generations. The Mathews Legacy Society honors friends of our museums who have established planned gifts, thereby supporting future generations with their enduring investments in our ed-ucational mission to foster understanding and awareness of the early history, settlement, and development of the United States.

The Annual Fund was a critical element of the Cam-paign for Support, providing unrestricted support that helped underwrite core museum and education pro-grams, including living-history interpretation in the out-door exhibits, field trips and classroom outreach, special exhibitions, and the maritime education program. Thanks to the collective impact of annual donors, the Annual Fund exceeded its $5.8 million Campaign goal by raising $6.4 million.

The 1607 Society is the premier annual giving society and the cornerstone of the Annual Fund. Members share a dedication for preserving and teaching the lessons of our nation’s history. Throughout the Campaign, The 1607 Society enjoyed exclusive social and cultural events.

In fiscal year 2016, the Foundation, Inc., launched The Revolutionaries to engage a new generation of philan-thropists. With an active social media presence using the hashtag #berevolutionary, this group hosted numer-ous events at our museums and in the community. In the two years since its launch, 75 donors have joined the ranks of The Revolutionaries.

Beyond the Campaign, donations to the Annual Fund will play a vital role in showcasing our nation’s history at Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolu-tion Museum at Yorktown, including acquiring period artifacts for our galleries, supporting special exhibi-tions, sustaining living-history programs, and delivering education programming that expand the borders of the classroom.

Beyond the

22

As the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation looks to the future, our focus is on pursuing a vision of innovative and vibrant living-history museums that deepen understanding of the early history of the United States and the people who founded our nation. We envision a future where every American is challenged to embrace the ideals and con-sequences of early American history and where the dialogue on our nation’s democracy engages all of our nation’s citizens.

Continuing the momentum of the American Revolution Museum at YorktownWith the completion of the American Revolution Mu-seum at Yorktown, the Foundation is poised to expand this new museum’s reach. Curators continue to acquire period artifacts that connect us to our past. Special exhibitions shed new light on the stories of the American Revolution and connect in meaningful ways with new audiences. A youth and teacher conference will focus on the 18th-century ideals of service and civic virtue and renew those ideals for the 21st century, building the next generation of “founders.”

Writing a new chapter at Jamestown SettlementIn 2019, Virginia will take the spotlight for the 400th commemoration of key events in 1619 that shaped America’s beginnings—and the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation is playing a key role. Building on one of the 2019 Commemoration’s key themes, the recruitment of women to the Virginia colony, the Foundation is devel-oping an international special exhibition—“Tenacity:

Women in Jamestown and Early Virginia.” More than a decade after the official opening of the Jamestown Settle-ment permanent galleries, displays are being updated; new academic research incorporated; and technology enhanced, to ready the museum for a modern audience eager to discover the roots of our nation’s heritage.

Recommitting as a leader in history educationThe Foundation has a continued commitment to our status as the leading provider of structured museum education in Virginia, with new and ongoing programs that include teacher resources and trainings, innovative technology-based applications, outreach education, and field trips.

Developing long-term sustainabilityBuilding a stronger endowment ensures diverse and stable funding resources for core programs, including special exhibitions, artifact acquisition, and education programs.

A new experiential theater at Jamestown Settlement will focus on the dramatic story of the 1676 Bacon’s Rebellion.
