I take refuge in PadmasambhavaO Kagyuuml gurus please grant your blessingsPlease turn the minds of faithful ones towards the dharmaMay we embrace the path of liberation beyond return

Atisha the protector of the snowland saidldquoAmong many examine your speechWhen you stay alone examine your mindrdquoBriefly he taught these two points

The mind is the root of faultsAnd the mouth is the gateway for these faults to emergeThus always watch over both

All of saṃsāra and nirvāṇa are your own mindThey donrsquot arise from anything else in the slightestEverything such as joy and suffering good and badHigh and low are the conceptual constructs of mind

If your mind is pure you are buddhaWherever you reside is a pure realmWhatever you do is from the state of the dharmatāWhatever appears is the jewel display of wisdom

If your mind is of an impure natureYoursquoll see faults even in the buddhasYoursquoll get angry even at your parentsMost things will appear as if they were your enemies

Expectation fear attachment and anger will continue unabatedSuch useless things will waste your life awayWhomever you associate with there will be discordAnd wherever you stay it will be uncomfortable

However much you own you wonrsquot be contentFor everything you accumulate yoursquoll need that much more

Being distracted again and again by the appearances of this lifeEven if you think about practicing dharmaYoursquoll waste your life caught up in present activities

At first when you feel a sense of renunciationYoursquoll feel like you could be rid of each and everything you ownOnce you become intractable yoursquoll cling even to needles

At first when you feel a sense of devotionYou wonrsquot think of anyone except your guruAfter a while yoursquoll have wrong views

At first when you feel a sense of faithYour spiritual practice will pile up one on top of the otherAs you get older all of this fades away

Whenever you find a new friendYou value their life more than your ownOnce your enthusiasm fades awayYoursquoll be upset with them as if they were your enemy

The root of all of theseIs not taking your own mind to be paramount

If you are able to make use of your mindThen you donrsquot need to search for some other place of retreatWhen concepts are absent that is your retreat

You donrsquot need to search outside for the guruThe nature of mind is the enlightened guru

You donrsquot need to worry about other spiritual practices to be doneBeing without distraction is the heart of spiritual practiceYou donrsquot need to deliberately abandon distractionsIf your mindfulness is firm things are spontaneously liberated

You donrsquot need to fear that afflictions will occurIf you recognize their nature it is primordial wisdom

Except for this momentary mind of yoursSaṃsāra and nirvāṇa are not established as anything elsePlease always watch over the mind

Unless mind is tamed withinOuter enemies will be inexhaustibleIf you tame the anger withinAll enemies on earth will be pacified

If contentment does not arise within your mindEven if you have everything you could ever want yoursquoll be like a beggarThose who are content and rid of clingingAre always rich even without possessions

When you accomplish wholesome worldly activitiesAs well as dharma and virtuesHabitual tendencies arouse mental joyThis causes you to take birth in the higher realms

That is also impermanent it is saṃsāraWhen looking at the essence of joyful feelingsYou see they are emptyAnd this is a cause for the path of liberation

Suffering arises from unwholesomeSpiritual and worldly activities

If you follow after thoughts and afflictionsSuch as hatred anger and desireIt will cause you to take birth in the three lower realmsTo be born in any of them brings about unimaginable torment

Whatever afflictions or sufferings occurBy looking at their essence they vanish into emptinessThere is no way for wisdom to revert from that state

To not separate your mind from thisAnd always guard your mind is criticalThe entirety of the dharma is encapsulated in guarding your mindThe bodhisattva Shantideva spoke of how to guard the mind

ldquoFor those who wish to guard their mindsThis is brought about by mindfulness and introspectionAs is said All should diligently guard their mindsI fold my hands in reverence to such personsrdquo

To practice in accordance with what is said here is criticalThat being so the six collections of consciousness and all appearing objectsAre simply the magical display of mindrsquos natureThus it is a mistake to think there is some agent who practices adoption andrejection

Even though taking things onto the pathAs an equal taste is supremeFor the beginner let your view be highAnd your practice precise

As it is said ldquoThe human form with its freedoms and advantages is hard to findrdquoThinking over and over about death and impermanenceGive rise to certainty about the infallibility of karma and its effects

When you see or hear of anotherrsquos deathKnow it to be a warning for youWhen you notice the changes from summer to winterRecall that everything is impermanent

When you catch sight of bees with their honeyKnow that possessions are unnecessaryWhen you see a house or town that is emptyConsider it as your own home or dwelling

When you see others have parted ways with their friendsRecall your own close relationsWhen things suddenly happen to others against their willRemember that such things could happen to you as well

Self and othermdasheverythingmdashis as a dreamThere isnrsquot even the slightest thing which is truly established

When you maintain the natural state as it isWithout spoiling or fabricating your mindThe emptiness of all inner and outer phenomenaIs realized to be the sky-like union of clarity and emptiness

That is ultimate bodhicittaMigrating beings who do not realize thisWander in saṃsāra under the influence of dualistic apprehension

Limitless and unfabricated compassionNaturally arises for those who undergo such tormentThis is relative bodhicitta

Without grasping at compassion realize its emptinessCompassion the spontaneous energy of emptiness will emergeUnion is the essence of the teachings of sūtra and mantraYou should engage in this profound practice

The method for having such things arise in your mindstreamIs to accumulate a wealth of merit take all of it into your own handsPray to the Three JewelsTake devotion to the guru as the vital point

Encourage yourself and others to avoid wrongdoingAnd however you can engage in virtueDo not separate yourself from the bodhicitta of the Great VehicleNor from pure dedication of your merit

The spiritual practitioner known as Lodrouml ThayeacuteAn old yogin who does nothing but eat sleep and defecateComposed this to clear up some things for DevendraA virtuous-minded person whose magnificent qualities are like the waxing moon

May you have long life and master dharma practiceAnd may the two-fold benefit be spontaneously accomplished

Although plenty of Dharma preliminaries are taughtThey are all summed up in revulsion and renunciationDevotion to the guru too is particularly importantFor traversing the paths and stages in months or yearsMuch is said about whats key to the main practiceBut theres no teaching more profoundThan emptiness with compassion at its very coreIn your own mindmdashempty clear unceasingmdashThe three kāyas are by nature completeRecognise them and then be watchfully awareTheres no need to look for śūnyatā elsewhereCultivate compassion for all your old mothersWho not realising the natural state are now deludedA great deal could be said about concluding practicesBut confess any misdeeds right awayAnd dedicate whatever virtues you have performedTowards the enlightenment of all sentient beingsAnd be sure to recite Mahāyāna prayers of aspiration

Mahāmudrā The Swift Way to Become a Lord ofRealization

Embodiment of all sources of refuge noble guruInspire us with your blessings I pray

Now that you have this unique opportunity free and well-favouredUse it I beg you to practise Dharma for the benefit of future livesHuman life is like the sun shining between the cloudsIt can be gone in a moment with nothing accomplishedAnd regret at the moment of death will be to no availSo practise straightaway with diligent enthusiasm

The Dharma is vast and it has many formsBut the teachings that bring Buddhahood in a single lifetimeAre the two ultimate systems of Mahāmudrā and DzogchenThe Mahāmudrā of bliss and emptiness on the path of meansIs the actual practice of secret mantraBut those who practise it are few and far betweenThe Mahāmudrā of the innate on the path of liberationIs an easier practice offering great reward at little riskAnd is of benefit to all regardless of capacity

For this take the practice to heart in its essential formMotivate yourself with reflection on impermanence and deathAnd limit all unnecessary activity and projectsGenerate disgust and renunciation from the depths of your heartFor the whole of saṃsāra and its three realmsPurify your mind with the preliminaries in the beginningThen for the main part practise guru yogaAnd let your devotion develop and increaseWith your body in the correct postureLook into the essence of mind be it moving or stillWhether it is in motion or notIts nature remains the sameSo settle in an unaltered experience of its essenceIts crucial that youre constantly mindful and awareWhen a stable stillness of mind developsThen without deliberate clinging or fixationBlend it with sensory perceptions and states of mindAnd thereby integrate your thoughts into the path

When seeing a fleeting thought in the present momentBy viewing its essence with penetrating presenceIt is freed by itself and dawns as dharmakāyaTheres no other activity in the essence of mindSo dont manipulate mind in the next momentIf without trying to apply a patch to your thoughtsYou remain relaxed undistracted while not meditatingIn the natural flow of genuine mind as it actually abidesYou will swiftly become a powerful lord of realization

The Kusālis Instruction on the Nature of Mind

Namo guruAlthough there are many ways of explaining view and meditationThey all come down to sustaining the essence of ones own mindWhat we call mind is not something that exists elsewheremdashIt is the very thought that you are experiencing right nowSo without being swept away and following wherever it leadsLook directly into its face its very own essenceAt that time theres no duality of looker and looked atAs it is empty theres no real substanceAs it is clear it is aware of itselfThese qualities are not separatemdashthey are a unityOut of nothing at all anything at all can ariseYou need only sustain this with the mindfulness of never forgettingThis bare and simple recognition of the nature itselfmdashTheres no need to search for some other object of meditationUntainted by fabricated hopes and anxietiesmdash Is it or Is it notmdashAllow the mind to settle directly just as it isThis unfabricated and ordinary knowingIs the ultimate clear light of dharmakāyaAlthough many special terms exist in Mahāmudrā and DzogchenThe real root of the practice boils down to simply thisNot content with this seeking Buddhahood as some other excellenceIs merely to be bound up in hope and fear ndash something to avoidAs a means of bringing about realisation in this wayDevotion and the accumulations are of the utmost importanceSo always emphasise devotion for the guru and Lord of OrgyenAnd strive to practise virtue with your body speech and mind

A Brief Biography of Jamgoumln Kongtrul Lodrouml Thayeby Alak Zenkar Rinpoche

The sublime Kongtrul Youmlnten Gyatso (1813-1899) was born in the hidden valley ofRongyap which lies in front of Pema Lhartse in Drida Zelmogang in East Tibet inthe Water Bird year of the fourteenth calendrical cycle

His father was Tendzin Yungdrung of the royal Khyung clan of accomplishedpractitioners and his mother was the yogini Tashi Tso

From his fifth year he studied the basics of the alphabet and so on Then from theage of about ten he began to study on an enormous scale and without sectarian biasreceiving teachings from many spiritual guides of various traditions includingGyurme Thutob Namgyal of Zechen Tai Situ Pema Nyinche Wangpo and JamyangKhyentse Wangpo He learned all the common sciences such as Sanskrit grammarlogic and epistemology (pramāṇa) arts and crafts medicine and so on and hestudied reflected and meditated upon all the uncommon topics of learning includingthe Madhyamika Prajntildeāpāramitā Vinaya and Abhidharmakośa of the vehicle ofcharacteristics as well as the tantras commentaries (āgama) and pith instructions(upadeśa) of the mantra vehicle from both the kama and terma and both the old andnew translation schools

To provide guidance for fortunate disciples he composed and edited the ninetyvolume collection of texts universally renowned as the lsquoFive Great Treasuriesrsquo1

1 The Treasury of Encyclopedic Knowledge which brilliantly reveals theground path and fruition for the whole of sutra and mantra from thepaths of the common sciences all the way up to Dzogchen Atiyoga whichis the culmination of the nine vehicles in the uncommon approach

2 The Treasury of Precious Instructions which is a compilation of the mostprofound maturing empowerments and liberating instructions belongingto the eight great chariots of the practice lineage

3 The Treasury of Kagyuuml Mantras which is a compendium of mandalarituals maturing empowerments and liberating instructions such asYangdak Vajrakīlaya and Yamāntaka from the Nyingma kama and thetantra cycles from the new translation lineages of Marpa and Ngok

4 The Treasury of Precious Termas which distills the quintessence of anocean of profound termas within the Nyingma school

5 a) The Uncommon Treasury which contains the unique secret treasures ofhis own profound terma revelations

b) The Treasury of Extensive Teachings which includes various related workssuch as praises and advice as well as compositions on medicine science andso on

In addition he dedicated his whole life to teaching and spreading the Dharma bygiving empowerments instructions advice and reading transmissions for both sutraand mantra kama and terma old and new translation schools without any sectarianbias

Finally at the age of eighty seven his physical manifestation was absorbed intoabsolute space

His students included lineage holders from the Kagyuuml school headed by thefourteenth and fifteenth Karmapas and the tenth and eleventh Tai Situpas as well asmasters of the Sakya and Ngor traditions including Jamyang Loter Wangpo andChoumlje Kunga Jamyang holders of the Early Translation teachings including MiphamJamyang Namgyal and Tertoumln Lerab Lingpa and masters from the Riwo Gendenpatradition including Gyuumlme Khenpo Yeshe Gongphel and Drakyab Dongtrul KhechokNgawang Damchouml Gyatso In short his disciples were incredibly vast in number andcame from all over Tibet from the provinces of Uuml and Tsang in Central Tibet andalso from the upper middle and lower regions of East Tibet

Quintessence of the Ārya Mantildejuśrī Tantra -CommentaryThis quintessence of the tantra of the Great Perfection of Mantildejuśrī has three parts

1 The Meaning of the Beginning

In the language of India ārya mantildejuśrī tantra garbha

Since India is the source of the Dharma this shows the pure origin of the teaching

In the language of Tibet འཕགསཔའཇམདཔལདཡངངའཕགསཔའཇམདཔལདཡངང (phags pa jam dpal rgyud kyi

yang snying)

It is translated in order to make it it is easier to understand

Homage is then paid to the yidam deity so that obstacles will not arise and meritwill increase

Homage to Mantildejuśrī

Mantildejuśrī is Gentle Glory lsquogentlersquo indicates the freedom from the two obscurationswhich is the perfect abandonment lsquogloryrsquo indicates the perfect realization in whichall qualities are fully present What does this refer to It is the wisdom of the naturalstate of the Great Perfection which is by its nature clear light with the essence ofemptiness To realize this without duality is to pay homage

2 The Meaning of the Main Part

From this point onwards is the main part of the text First of all there is the perfectcontext for the teaching which is shown by the words lsquoin this wayrsquo

This indicates the five perfections It indicates that in this place this teacher gavethis teaching at this time to this retinue The place is the great heaven of Akaniṣṭhathe teacher is the Buddha Vajradhara the teaching is this tantra which reveals theprofound nature of ultimate reality the retinue is made up of bodhisattvas on thetenth bhūmi such as Vajrapāṇi and the rest and the time is the inconceivable timeFurthermore this same phrase also shows how the teaching was brought about as aresult of Vajrapāṇirsquos request to reveal the profound and secret teaching the teachertaught in this way At that time the teacher and retinue were blessed into a state ofindivisibility

Then the actual theme of the tantra is expressed in terms of the three tantras (orcontinua)mdashthe continua of the ground path and fruition

The Continuum of the Fruition

The continuum of the fruition is taught first in order to inspire students lsquoTheAwakened One the transcendent Lordrsquo indicates the ultimate level of fruition thestate of a perfectly awakened buddha or transcendent lord who has abandoned allthat must be abandoned realized all that must be realized and carries outenlightened activity continually and uninterruptedly

The Continuum of the Ground

Then the continuum of the ground is shown You might wonder from where thecontinuum of the fruition arises so the text says lsquoThe wisdom kāya spontaneouslyarisenrsquo Wisdom here means the apparent wisdom which is pure awareness orrigpa Kāya means the dharmakāya the aspect of emptiness This emptiness andclarity which has the essence of awareness is the nature of all beingsrsquo minds It isnot made any better by enlightenment nor does the state of an ordinary being makeit any worse It has always been present without falling into the extremes of samsaraor nirvana and so it is naturally arisen

The Continuum of the Path

Although this naturally arising wisdom already abides in such a way the continuumof the path must still be revealed so that we can purify our false clinging anddualistic perception

lsquoThe single eye of wisdom entirely unobscuredrsquo refers therefore to the essence thewisdom of primordial purity which is free from all delusion This is referred to asthe lsquoeyersquo of wisdom because it is our own individual awareness It is lsquosinglersquo becausethis alone sees the nature of all things It is lsquoentirely unobscuredrsquo because when werest in this pure awareness according to its own mode of being all the conceptualconstructs of dualistic perception are pacified

The next line lsquothe light of wisdom forever shining brightlyrsquo refers to the naturethe wisdom of spontaneous presence which is referred to as the light of wisdombecause it has the discernment of clear light When this is seen through skilful meansit continually arises so the text says lsquoforever shining brightlyrsquo As the mind becomeshabituated to these two forms of wisdom all our dualistic perceptions and theelements of the body are all purified and we attain the kāya of the wisdom beingMantildejuśrī so the texts says lsquoTo you Arapacana I pay homagersquo This refers to thewisdom of clear light which is beyond arising beyond ceasing beyond remainingbeyond characteristics beyond aspiration and beyond coming and going

This is the meaning of the main part realizing the ground training in the path andgaining the fruition

3 The Meaning of the Conclusion

Then there is a praise rejoicing in the meaning of what has been expressed lsquoTo youthe very embodiment of wisdom I bowrsquo This is a homage paid in the recognitionand realization that the teacher and retinue are non-dual in nature

lsquoThus it is explained by all the perfect buddhasrsquo means that since this is theprofound definitive meaning which is taught by all the buddhas of the past presentand future it should be cherished by all those of supremely good merit and fortune

The main part of the text could also be explained in another way The first wisdomcould be taken to mean the yoga of the Great Perfection beyond conceptual ideasand the second wisdom could refer to the deity mantra mandala subtle channelsenergies and essences and so on

The name of the tantra is the lsquoEssence of the Perfect Recitation of the Names of theWisdom Being the Transcendent Lord Mantildejushrirsquo

lsquoEssencersquo here indicates that just like butter churned from milk the entire meaningof the tantra is shown here in just three statements

This concludes this teaching spoken by the transcendent lord Śākyamuni

Of the two categoriesmdashWord and treatisesmdashthis belongs to the category of BuddhaWord Of the three types of Buddha Wordmdashdirectly spoken spoken by authorizationand spoken through blessingmdashthis belongs to the category of teachings that weredirectly spoken As for the one who taught it it was Śākyamuni He taught itdirectly and since all buddhas are one in their wisdom mind they also taught itindirectly lsquoThis concludesrsquo means that this is complete in terms of both word andmeaning with nothing whatsoever omitted

Guru Padma gave this to Jomo Shedroumln1

Then it was hidden as a terma The precious Guru Choumlkyi Wangchuk took it fromKhoting Lhakhang in Lhodrak where it was entrusted to Nyentoumln Dzambhala2 ofYangdrok and the terma seals were released bringing benefit to beings on a vast scale

གངསཅནངསའརགནདའགསམཐའདག gangchen jong dir nouml tseacute rik tadakMay all types of harm and violence in these snowy lands

དལངབམསམགནཔ gyuuml la changchub sem chok rinpocheArise naturally in the minds of all beings human and non-human alike

ཕནནམསཔམསདངནནསང pentsuumln jampeacute sem dangden neacute kyangMay the minds of all be filled with love for one another

གམལབསབཅསབནཔབས tsa sum gyalwa seacute cheacute denpeacute tobThrough the force of the truth embodied in the Three Roots the Buddhas and their heirs

འརའདསདབབགངམསདང khordeacute geweacute tsawa gang chi dangAnd through the power of all the sources of merit throughout saṃsāra and nirvāṇa

བདགཅགགབསམམཔརདཀརབམས dakchak lhaksam nampar karweacute tuumlAnd of our own completely pure positive intention

གསལབཏབནཔའསའབརག soltab moumlnpeacute drebu drub gyur chikMay this our prayer of aspiration be fulfilled

ས༧མའཇམདངསམནབདབངཔཞལནསངསངསའབའརནབསརའརཆདཔས དནསབདལབབནལམནཞགལནགམཛདཔནཔསདནསངརགལསབཀའལབསཔརརངབལགསསསཔབནའབཔརརག སསམཐའཡསསའནནགལབདཀརགསའབཔརབདངནཔརརབའ The precious master Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo said ldquoThese are extremely turbulent times and there is no tellingwhat will happen I am praying for peace and stability in Tibet six times each day and it is important for you todo the samerdquo So it was that I Lodrouml Thaye wrote this down as a personal reminder in Tsadra Rinchen Drak on apropitious morning during the waxing phase of the twelfth month
