Jamiatul Ulama KZN
The official logo of the
Jamiatul Ulama KZN.
Intricate design and
custom calligraphy have
produced a distinct yet
highly attractive logo.
The Jamiatul Ulama was established on the 15 January 1955 (20 Jumaadal Ula 1374) at the East Street
Madrasah, in Pietermaritzburg as the first Ulama body for Natal. The primary objective was the
preservation, protection and propagation of true and pristine Islam.
It was indeed a historical moment for the Muslims in KZN when the founder members of the Jamiat met to
establish the organization which now stands as the official body of religious, educational and other affairs of
the Muslim Community of KwaZulu-Natal.

History
The Old Jamiat Office
at 579 West Street,
Durban.
The first home of the Jamiat was the business premises of Hazrat Moulana Abdul Haq Omarjee
(RA) in Grey Street which served as the Jamiat office by day and by night his home served the
same purpose. The first official office of the Jamiat was established in 1972 at Sayani Centre
which also heralded the arrival of Hazrat Moulana Yunus Patel Saheb (RA) at the Jamiat office to fulfill the
role of administering the Jamiat office.
Hazrat Ml. Patel Saheb had mentioned that at that time there was no Fatwa Dept and Social Dept and
Welfare office. One man was the Administrator, the Mufti, the marriage counsellor and the welfare officer.
Indeed Hazrat Moulana had made great sacrifices in the 20 years that he served the Jamiat and may Allah
Ta’ala fill his grave and the graves of all our pious predecessors with Noor.

Ta’limi Board
The Ta’limi Board handles one of the most vital aspects of Deen, that of ensuring the Islamic
education of our children. Alhamdulillah, this task is most capably and ably executed under the
direct care and supervision of Mufti Ebrahim Salejee Saheb (DB) and Ml. Ilyas Patel Saheb (DB).
The Ta’limi Board has 151 Maktabs under its care with 5110 learners. Many of these Maktabs are
established in rural areas. The following are some of the activities of the Ta’limi Board: Supervision of
Maktabs, Imaam Khateeb Course, Workshops for empowering Islamic educators, Muallimah Skills
Development Course (MSDC), Publications of Maktab material, Conducting of Examinations, Ta'limi
Board Website, distribution of Zakaat hampers, Ramadhaan Awareness and Iftaari Programme, Eid
hampers, Feeding Schemes, yearly Qurbaani Programme in rural areas, Adult Classes (for revert ladies), as
well as conducting Janaazah Salaah and Burials.
Tasheel Syllabus
The current Maktab syllabus of the Talimiboard is known as the Tasheel syllabus. The syllabus instructs
on various aspects of Islamic knowledge that every Muslim should be acquanted with. It covers Islamic
rulings, Islamic History, Islamic Beliefs, Moral conduct and character and selected Ahadith valuable to
the life of a Muslim.
The Tasheel syllabus is internationally acclaimed. It is the choice syllabus for hundreds if not thousands

Jamiat Projects
The recent past has seen a number of successful Jamiat projects take flight locally and
internationally. From our very doorstep to international destinations in Russia, Allah is using the
Jamiat in the propagation of His Deen.
From amongst the Jamiat projects the following are of special note: Qurans for Africa, Russian Fatwa
Project, Gaza Relief, Pakistan Flood Relief, Pre-Marital and Combatting Crime Workshop and the Quarry
Rd Flood Relief.
Mufti AK Hoosen Programmes on Iran and Shiasm
The menace of Shiasm is increasingly rearing its head in South Africa. Already they have established
Temples (as their worship centres cannot be called Masjids) and educational centres in disadvantaged
areas with the aim of buying people’s Imaan, tactically emulating Christian Missionaries.
Ignoring this threat is to the detriment of our and our future progeny’s Imaan. As a vital step in
combatting this menace, the Jamiat had arranged Mufti AK Hoosen’s tour in various areas in KZN to
address this issue and help people understand the reality of the matter.
Alhamdulillah these programmes were exceptionally received and requests have been received from
across the country for the same.
Mufti AK Hoosen Programmes on Iran and Shiasm
Qurans for Africa
The motivation behind the Quran for Africa project was a request for assistance from Imaam Ismail
Musaally for supplying Sierra Leone with Qurans. Sierra Leone has a population of 6 million with
75% being Muslim. Despite this Qurans are such a rarity in the country that you would find
difficulty in finding a Quran in any of its Masjids.
The Jamiat realising the need of the hour embarked on this project of spreading the light of the Quran to
Sierra Leone. Alhamdulillah this project was warmly recieved by the Muslim community and 10 000
Qurans were shipped to Sierra Leone in April 2012. Official distribution was undertaken by Ml. Abdullah
Khan who travelled to Sierra Leone to facilitate the same. Since then the Jamiat has received numerous
requests from all parts of Africa requesting Qurans. Thus began the Qurans for Africa Project.
Quran Distribution in Malawi
Malawi was the next port of call in the Qurans for Africa Project. Due the massive interest generated by the
Sierra Leone Quran distribution, a number of well-wishers expressed their desire to accompany subsequent
distributions.
On Friday September 07, 2012 a delegation of 7 members consisting of a doctor, an attorney, a few
businessmen and Moulana MS Mehtar from the Jamiat KZN departed from Masjid Hilaal for Malawi via road
to oversee the distribution of Qur’an. Distribution was facilitated by Moulana Zainul Abideen Salejee who runs
over 180 Maktabs in Malawi. Alhamdulillah a total of 4000 Qurans were distributed in Malawi.

country.
Russian Fatwa Kitab
The Russian Fatwa Kitab project commenced in 2009 when we had teamed up with some
concerned brothers in Russia and opened the service of answering peoples questions from Russia.
This was done through the Russian website askimam.ru which was established by Rustam
Abdullin. Questions were received from Russian speaking Muslims in and around Russia and answers were
provided in Russian with the assistance of translators. These answers were provided by the Fatwa
Department of the Jamiatul Ulama (KZN) under the guidance of Mufti Ebrahim Desai (Hafidhahullah) of
the Darul Iftaa, Sherwood.
As the number of published questions and answers steadily grew, requests were received to have these
published in book form. Hence, 5000 copies of the book “Sovromennye Fetve” (which is the Russian
equivalent of Contemporary Fatawa) were published in 2012., Alhamdulillah.
Distribution
Mufti Suhail Tarmahomed (head Mufti of
the Jamiat) personally undertook the
journey to Russia to officiate the
distribution of the Kitab. The full report
can be viewed on the Jamiat site by
searching 20 Days in Russia.

Pakistan Flood Relief
In September 2011, Pakistan experienced severe flooding particularly in the Sindh Province due to
heavy Monsoon rains, three times the volume normally experienced. Floading was so sever that 1.2
million people were left homeless.
As a result, the Jamiatul Ulama KZN arranged an emergency relief team to travel to Pakistan in order to
dispense substantial relief aid to the people who were most affected. The relief team comprising of
Moulana Ahmed Motara, Moulana Ahmed Mahomedy and Brother Zaakir Rawat (full time humanitarian
worker, courtesy of Al Imdaad Foundation) left in October from South Africa and were met by a relief
team in Pakistan. Aid to the value of R2 000 000.00 was distributed in the affected areas.
Press Report on the Jamiat KZN Flood Relief
Islamabad: Jamiatul Ulama, an international charity organisation from Durban, South Africa, distributed relief goods among flood
victims of Sindh, says a press release issued here Wednesday. A team of the organisation, which arrived earlier this week visited
Umer Kot and Badin and distributed kitchen items, clothes, cots, shoes and other necessary items among 1,500 affected families. A
team of the organisation will also distribute relief goods among 500 flood affectees of Tando Muhammad Khan today (Thursday).
Jamiatul Ulama, team leader Ahmed Mahomedy during visit to Badin expressed deep concern over the plight of flood victims. We
are here to express our solidarity with you, you are our Muslim brethren and we cannot leave you alone in this dreadful situation.
People of South Africa are well aware of disasters in Pakistan from earthquake 2005 to 2011 floods. We have brought package of
$250,000 for flood victims, but looking at the enormity of the disaster, we feel it will not be enough and we appeal to the
international community to come forward and help flood victims to mitigate their sufferings, he added.
