Welcome to Our 2012 LA Summer Program!

The Los Angeles offi ce has been eagerly awaiting your arrival. Not only do we look forward to working with you on a variety of exciting projects, but we are also eager to share some of our favorite restaurants, events, activities and organizations with you. We love living and practicing law in Los Angeles, and

we hope that you will enjoy your time here as much as we do.

We have a fun and interesting ten-week program lined up that will give you an opportunity to interact with our partners and associates on a range of

work assignments and in a variety of social settings. You will be exposed to our diverse practice groups through your work assignments and out-of-offi ce experiences such as depositions, hearings, client meetings, arbitrations and trials, which will give you a glimpse of real-world legal challenges. We hope

that you will see this summer as an opportunity to collaborate with us, to use your creativity and to be a part of the Gibson Dunn solution to

unprecedented and unique legal challenges-challenges which make life and work at our fi rm meaningful and rewarding.

Throughout the summer, you will also be invited to attend a variety of fun and exciting social events. Not only will these events help you learn more

about the Los Angeles area and all that it has to off er, but they will also give you the opportunity to develop lasting and meaningful relationships with

our associates and partners. Gibson Dunn’s people are its greatest asset. The results we obtain for our clients and our enjoyment of our work are a direct result of the talented, diverse and creative individuals that practice law in this offi ce. We are thrilled that you have joined us and look forward to a

fantastic summer!

Bottega Louie (700 S. Grand Ave.)With gourmet food and pastries, it’s great any time, but they don’t take reservations so be prepared.

Chaya Downtown (525 S. Flower St.)Combining Asian fusion with urban chic and one of the best happy hours in Downtown (M-S, 5-10pm)!

Church & State Bistro (1850 Industrial St.)Exotic French cuisine. Stop by on Sunday for their five-course prix-fixe dinner for only $39.

Bona Vista Lounge (404 S. Figueroa St.) The revolving cocktail lounge boasts soaring views of Downtown LA. It’s the perfect location for any occasion.

Broadway Bar (830 S. Broadway)Casual-but-classy cocktail lounge conveniently located adjacent to the restored Orpheum Theatre with a cool circle bar layout.

Casey’s Irish Pub (613 S. Grand Ave.)Great 1930s Chicago feel pub in a discreet one-story historic building. Team Trivia every Monday night.

The Edison (108 W. 2nd St.) Swanky atmosphere with several bar areas, spaces to lounge, dance, drink and eat. Make sure to follow the dress code!

Library Bar (630 W. 6th St.)Known for its designed interiors and unique concepts, come for Cinema Sundays ($2 popcorn and drink specials).

Perch LA (488 S. Hill St.)Three full bars that focus on simple, fresh, Parisian-inspired cocktails. Head up to the rooftop patio for gorgeous views of Downtown LA. On any given night you may come to see a live cabaret act, a funky jazz trio, indie bands or a late night DJ.

Seven Grand (515 W. 7th St.)Spirits and a wide selection of whiskeys are the biggest draw at Seven Grand.

The Standard (505 S. Flower St.)The Rooftop Bar offers a pool, dance floor, vibrating waterbed pods and panoramic views of Downtown LA. Nightly DJs and excellent food have established the bar as one of the long-standing nightlife destinations in Downtown.

Where to Go:Art WalkA free, self-guided, public tour showcasing the best galleries, artists, restaurants, bars and shops on the 2nd Thursday of every month.

Bradbury Building (304 S. Broadway)With a light-filled Victorian court, open-cage elevators and marble stairs, this architectural gem is featured in movies like 500 Days of Summer.

Chinatown (943 N. Broadway)Home to a unique and eclectic community of shops, art galleries and delicious restaurants and bakeries, Chinatown is a great way to spend a Saturday.

Feel Karaoke (600 S. Harvard Blvd.) One of the best karaoke clubs in Koreatown! With a huge song selection and full bottle service, servers will keep your room stocked with drinks so you and your group can enjoy yourselves throughout the entire evening!

Grammy Museum (800 W. Olympic Blvd.) Learn all about the history of the Grammys and the power of music. Four floors are filled with exhibits, interactive experiences and films to provide a one-of-a-kind visitor experience.

L.A. LIVE (777 Chick Hearn Ct.) Featuring sports and music venues, night clubs, restaurants, a bowling alley, museum and movie theaters, L.A. LIVE is the premier downtown destination for live entertainment.

Last Remaining Seats (523 W. 6th St.)From the LA Conservancy, come and enjoy classic films and live entertainment in the historic theatres of LA.

Los Angeles Conservancy’s Walking TourLed by knowledgeable docents, explore the history and heart of Downtown LA through its unique architecture.

Nokia Theater (777 Chick Hearn Ct.)Home to the Emmy Awards and boasting an intimate feel (no seat further from the stage than 220 ft), this concert venue is perfect.

Olvera Street (845 N Alameda St.)Vibrant, internationally renowned market filled with shopping, dining, fiestas and other Mexican and Latino celebrations throughout the year.

Santee Alley One of the most popular shopping areas in the LA Fashion District best known for its festival atmosphere and amazing bargains. With over 150 stores you’ll find the latest trends in clothing styles, jewelry and accessories, shoes and boots, toys and gifts, cosmetics and more.

Staples Center (111 S. Figueroa St.)Home of the Lakers, Clippers, Kings and amazing concerts. With world-class amenities, features and commitment to quality of service, the guest experience is second to none.

The Hat (491 N. Lake Ave.)An iconic fast-food restaurant specializes in pastrami sandwiches and chili cheese fries.

Marston’s (151 E. Walnut St.)Known as a great breakfast and lunch restaurant, get there early before the line is out the door!In 2012, named “Best Breakfast in California” by The Food Network Magazine.

The Royce (1401 S. Oak Knoll Ave.)Inside the iconic Langham Huntington Hotel, the Royce features New American cuisine, emphasizing fresh seasonal produce.  Be sure to enjoy wine from the White Room or Red Room while sitting at a table in the glass enclosed veranda with sweeping views of the garden.

Saladang and Saladang Song (363 S. Fair Oaks)Thai food so good it fills two restaurants next door to each other, each with its own menu.  Perfect and reasonably priced for small or large parties.    

Vertical Wine Bistro (70 N. Raymond Ave.)Impressive décor in the historic Old Pasadena district serving California dishes. Vertical is one part wine bar-lounge and one part dining room.  Make sure to save room for the signature dishes, especially the tasty truffle mac ‘n cheese!

21 Choices Frozen Yogurt (85 W. Colorado Blvd.)Creative, daily changing flavors you can pair up with candies, nuts or organic fruits and berries.  Perfect place to stop by as you walk through Old Town.

Bistro 45 (45 S. Mentor Ave.)A French bistro housed in a 1939 Art Deco building that combines traditional and contemporary.  Try the amazing pork belly!

Café Santorini (64 W. Union St.)Tucked in the heart of Old Town Pasadena, this offers a variety of delicious Mediterranean dishes and a secluded second floor patio.

The Derby (233 E. Huntington Dr., Arcadia)Close to the Santa Anita Race Track, a renowned steakhouse famous for its Bacon Wrapped Filet.  The Derby Delight and Brasholi remain popular favorites. The wine list can stand on its own, but is better paired with any one of the “photo finish” entrees.

Green Street Restaurant (146 Shoppers Ln.)Serving innovative, deliciously flavorful California cuisine since 1979. This Pasadena staple is home to the delicious Diane salad, and with its $5 cocktail/small bites weekday happy hour, it’s the perfect way to end your day or start your evening!

Where to Drink:Lucky Baldwin’s Old Towne (17 S. Raymond Ave.)With 62 beers on tap, this British Pub has the largest selection of draught Belgian beers and lots of rare bottles. Come and enjoy the year-round festivals (Barleywine, Oktoberfest, etc.) with glass specials and discount refills, as well as the excellent British food selection (fish and chips, bangers and mash, curry) and knowledgeable staff.

The Colorado Bar (2640 E. Colorado Blvd.)As a true dive bar in the heart of Pasadena’s Colorado Boulevard, this is a great place to grab a pitcher of beer with a group of friends on a mellow Friday night!

Esquire Bar & Lounge (3772 E. Foothill Blvd.)Sure to treat every customer as a VIP, the Esquire was created to provide an upscale bar/lounge in the eastern section of Pasadena. Designed for late afternoon business meetings, early evening relaxation rendezvous and late-night intimate social gatherings. Visit on Saturday nights to enjoy the live DJ.

Pop Champagne Bar (33 E. Union St.)With its ornate crystal chandeliers, Art Deco wallpaper and plush booths, this Old Pasadena hideaway has a seductive vibe that seems perfect for its Champagne- and dessert-heavy repertoire. Among the small plates offered are a trio of sliders that includes toppings like goat cheese and dates or Gorgonzola and bacon, and a similarly creative trifecta of deviled eggs. Offered by glass, bottle and flight, the selection of Champagnes is impressive, ranging from bona fide French vintages to sparkling wines from around the world, and there’s also an eclectic list of non-bubblies.

Magnolia (492 S. Lake Ave.)A sturdy and graceful magnolia tree surrounded by twinkling lights sets the stage for this reborn prohibition lounge. With one of the best happy hours in Pasadena, be sure to stop in Tues-Fri (4:30-7:30) and Sun-Mon until closing, when prices are slashed to between $2-$5 for drinks and 30% off menu items.

Where to Go:Eaton Canyon (1750 N. Altadena Dr.)Enjoy the hiking trails, picnic areas, seasonal streams and wildlife at this 190-acre zoological, botanical and geological nature preserve situated at the base of the beautiful San Gabriel Mountains.

Gamble House (4 Westmoreland Pl.)Dr. Emmett Brown’s mansion in the Back to the Future trilogy, this National Historic Landmark is an outstanding example of American Arts and Crafts style architecture. Because docent-guided tours are the only way to see the House interior, visit its website for tour times and prices.

The Huntington (1151 Oxford Rd., San Marino)Founded in 1919, this private, nonprofit institution is one of the world’s great cultural, research and educational centers, with a research library, art gallery and botanical garden. After you visit be sure to stop off at the Rose Garden Tea Room and enjoy tea, freshly-baked scones and a central buffet while overlooking three acres of roses.

iPic Theaters (42 Miller Alley)Calling all movie lovers! iPic offers the ultimate luxury experience. Check in 30 minutes before the movie, place your meal order and take your reserved seat where your food will be delivered. Add in a pillow, blanket and personal service throughout the movie, and that is what it means to go iPic Theaters. For after-movie drinks, visit their Salt Lounge with custom house-made infusions.

Norton Simon Museum (411 W. Colorado Blvd.)Known around the world as one of the most remarkable private art collections ever assembled. The Museum houses more than 12,000 objects, roughly 1,000 of which are on view in the galleries and gardens.

Old Town (45 S. De Lacey Ave.)The original commercial center of Pasadena, this is the perfect place for shopping, eating and entertainment, offering a variety of options for all ages!

Pasadena Playhouse (39 S. El Molino Ave.)This historic performing arts venue produces a variety of cultural and artistic events, professional shows and community engagements each year. Visit www.pasadenaplayhouse.org for more details.

Rose Bowl (1001 Rose Bowl Dr.)A National Historic Landmark built in 1922 and known mainly for the New Year’s Tournament of Roses Football Game. Head over on the 2nd Sunday of every month (rain or shine) for the Rose Bowl Flea Market featuring over 2,500 vendors.

Rose Bowl Trail (1001 Rose Bowl Dr.)If you’re looking for a good workout in Pasadena, our recommendation would be the 3.3-mile Rose Bowl recreation loop with colored pavement,striping and delineators to separate pedestrians from cyclists and motorists.

South Bay

Sashi Sushi & Sake Lounge (Manhattan Beach)This upscale sushi and sake lounge brings a bit of the Hollywood scene to Manhattan Beach. Shellback (Manhattan Beach)  One of the last great Surf Bars along the Coast and bonus, it’s a favorite hang-out of Mark Cuban!

Simmzy’s (Manhattan Beach)  Great gastro-pub right near the MB pier.  Small but really fun.  Try the Simmzy’s burger and the haystack fries, and white wine mimosa’s on the weekends are amazing.

The Strand House (Manhattan Beach)  Built right on the water next to the pier, this newly-opened restaurant has the best views of any restaurant in the South Bay.  The downstairs bar and lounge picks up the pace with a dance floor on the weekends.

Uncle Bill’s (Manhattan Beach)Worth the wait for weekend brunch!  Home of world famous bacon and cheddar waffles.

Zane’s (Hermosa Beach)Specializing in fresh seafood and prime stakes, with pasta, specialty pizza, classic chicken, gourmet burgers and salads as well.

Café Rio (Manhattan Beach)Just trust us that this is the best fast Mexican restaurant in town. Mike’s favorite: sweet pork barbacoa salad with the house dressing!

Houston’s (Manhattan Beach)Hefty portions of fresh American classics in an upscale and animated dining environment.

Manhattan Beach Brew Co. (Manhattan Beach)A variety of standard pub grub prepared from scratch, and a good selection of micro on tap and a reliable bottle selection that rotates frequently.

Martha’s (Hermosa Beach)With a very SoCal menu, this is a perfect place for brunch any day of the week.

MB Post (Manhattan Beach)  Excellent restaurant with a bit of a scene.  Serves small plates and literally everything on the menu is delicious.

Open Sesame (Manhattan Beach)Crave-worthy and affordable Lebanese fare.

Petros (Manhattan Beach) Tasty Greek food with great wine list and lots of outdoor seating.

Where to Drink:Ercoles (Manhattan Beach)The best dive bar in MB serving cheap drinks along with amazing burgers and decorated with a classic jukebox, wooden booths and a pool table.

Hennessey’s Tavern (Manhattan Beach)Two-story beach bar where you can grab a drink and watch the waves roll in from your seat on the rooftop. And their delicious Bloody Marys are just $2.50 during brunch on Sundays!

Katsu (Manhattan Beach)Fun happy hour and great sushi spot.

Mucho’s (Manhattan Beach)Upscale Mexican with amazing margaritas.

Rock ’N Fish (Manhattan Beach)Great drinks with bartenders who know how to make them, friendly staff and excellent seafood.

Sharkeez (Manhattan Beach)Great sports bar and local beach hangout with tasty Baja-style cuisine.

Shark’s Cove (Manhattan Beach)A combination of pub and nightlife in a single setting. A sports bar by day, with smalls bands playing on the weekend. The decor gives it a club-type feel, but it’s still comfortable and casual.

The Side Door (Manhattan Beach)This popular wine party place with a live DJ has an upscale atmosphere without being stuffy. Best to get there before 10:30 to avoid the lines.

Zinc Lounge (Manhattan Beach)Inside the upscale Shade hotel, this lounge is perfect for a nicely-dressed night on the town. If there’s a celebrity hangout in the South Bay, this is the place!

Where to Go:6-Man Tournament (Manhattan Beach)Weekend festival with surfing, bodysurfing and lifeguard competitions along with sand soccer and paddleboard races. The main event is the 6-Man Volleyball Tournament. If you’re up to the challenge, get together a team (make sure you show up in costume), or just come out with the rest of the South Bay to enjoy the spectacle.

Comedy and Magic Club (Manhattan Beach)Best comedy club in Manhattan Beach know for its A-list talent like Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld and more. And Jay Leno also frequents on Sunday nights to test out his Tonight Show jokes.

Hermosa and Manhattan BeachesKnown for surfing, beach volleyball, bicycle cruis-ing, sunbathing and an old-style pier.

Manhattan Beach Pier (Manhattan Beach)Great for people watching, take a stroll on the pier and visit the Round House Aquarium at the end of it (free admission).

Redondo Fun Factory (Redondo Beach Pier)Enjoy classic boardwalk-style and arcade games, carnival rides and a great seafood restaurant.

Redondo Sportfishing (Redondo Beach)Charter a trip out to sea for some great fishing with knowledgeable staff to help you along the way.

Saint Rocke (Hermosa Beach)Premiere live music venue in the South Bay with great drinks, happy hours and food.

Sand Dune Park (Hermosa Beach)Change up your workout routine and head over to the sand dunes. Sprinting up and down will give you one of the best workouts ever!

Sangria (Manhattan Beach)This dance club offers two DJs, two dance floors, two bars and an outdoor patio, fantastic food, Flamenco dancers on Tuesdays and jazz on Wednesdays. What more could you want?

South Bay Galleria (Redondo Beach)Perfect place for a shopping spree with over 140 stores and a variety of restaurants and services including a movie theater.

The Strand (Manhattan Beach)A wonderful pedestrian/bicycle path that goes right along the beach through the town.

Veterans Parkway (Manhattan Beach)This 21-acre park includes a 1.5-mile jogging trail with four workout stations.
